Canker Worms (April 28, 2015)
Nasty little inchworms have stripped entire pin oak trees for the past
several years; Northgate citizens banded trees this past autumn hoping
to stop some of them come springtime. Glendale Ave. at Washington St.

Representative John Lewis visited Durham to kick off the Durham Reads program in which
the Durham County Library encourages the wole county to read one book and discuss it.
This year the book was Lewis’ graphic novel March, about his experience in the civil rights
marhes of 50 years ago. Lewis stops to speak with a Durham resident. October 4, 2014.
Sausagew gravy and yolk
There are fre things I love more than fried eggs and biscuits and gravy. This was taken at
Rick’s Diner (although has been called Hope Valley Diner for years, I will never adjust). I
love the texture and richness of the gravy and yolk. I am also a big fan of Stephen Shore’s
photograhs of meals on the road - food is both generically American and so specific to a
place and a journey.

This abandoned phone booth sits on the corner of Rigsbee and W. Corporation St. right
outside of Lloyds lounge. I found it to be quite beautiful as a phone booth is a rare
thing these days. Despite the absence of an actual phone I think the booth still speaks
to what this part of Durham once was now that the city finds itself in a state of rapid
transformation toward modernity.

Wild Swarm of Bees in the Durham Arts Council Parking Lot
I was walking into the DAC building one day when I noticed a man with a big yellow ladder.
He was setting it up at the back wall of the parking lot, the same wall where the historical
mural is now. Then I saw he was dressed in full beekeeping gear, and was getting ready to
rescue a wild swarm of bees that had alit on the wall. Some people had seen it out the
window and called him. He set up a box, then took an ordinary broom and wept them into
the box.
