The2012tournamentwasnotassuccessfulfortheteam.Drawninaverydifficultgroup,the
teamlostallthreefixtures,losing3-1toCroatiaintheopener(SeanStLedgerwiththegoal)
beforegoingdown4-0toSpain(theeventualwinners)and2-0toItaly(thelosingfinalists.)
AninterestingfactfromthetwotournamentsisthattheRepublicofIreland’sgroupopponents
have,onbothoccasions,includedtheeventualfinalists.Ifthatistocontinuein2016,itmeans

NorthernIreland’s2016qualificationrepresentsthefirsttimetheteamhasreachedthefinalsof
aEuropeanChampionshiptournament,thoughtheycameagonizinglyclosetoqualificationfor
the1984tournament.Intheirqualifyinggroup,theyinflictedtwo1-0winsoverWestGermany
andwereonlyeliminatedwhentheWestGermansidescoredwithtenminutestospareintheir

In1932anobituaryappearedinanArmaghnewspaperreflectingonthelifeofahighlyrespectedlocalcitizenand
businessman.Init,acertainWilliamMcCrumofMilfordwaslaudedasabrilliantscholar,storytellerand
outstandingsportsman.Nothingunusualaboutthatifithadnotcontainedareferencetothefactthatthe
deceasedhadbeentheinspirationbehindoneofthemostmomentouschangestothelawsoffootball.
ItwasWilliamMcCrumwho,in1890,submittedaproposalfor“apenaltykick”totheIrishFootballAssociation.
TwelvemonthslateritwasapprovedbytheInternationalFootballAssociationBoardandincorporatedinthe
LawsoftheGame.
McCrumcamefromahighlyrespectedfamily.TheonlysonofRobertGarmanyMcCrum,alinenbaronwhobuilt
Milford,hewasaformerpupilatTheRoyalSchool,ArmaghandgraduatedfromTrinityCollege,Dublinin1886.
Affectionatelyrememberedinthevillageas‘MasterWillie,’hewasasportsmanofinternationalrecognition.He
wasinstrumentalinformingtheMilfordCricketClubdevotingmuchtimeandefforttocoaching.Throughouthis
lifehealwaysmaintainedakeeninterestintheBoyScoutMovement.Hewasalsospecificallyinterestedin
amateurdramaticsandwasthedrivingforcebehindTheMilfordPlayers.WhentheR.G.McCrumInstitute–built
byhisfathertoservicetherecreationalneedsofthevillage–openedin1914,hebecameactivelyinvolvedinthe
runningofit,encouragingallvillagerstotakepartinsomeorotherrecreation.Hewasabrilliantraconteurand
authorofsomeverymeritorioussketches.Asoneofthemanagingdirectorsofhisfather’slinenmanufacturing
business,McCrum,WatsonandMercer,herepresentedthecompany’sinterestsinLondonforanumberofyears.
Hespentthebestpartofhislife,however,inMilford.
TheobituaryonMcCrumpaintsapictureofapersonwhowasagentlemanfromheadtotoeandwhowas
obviouslytiredofseeingfootballersresortingtoallkindsofillegalmethods.Thetrendbecameathorninhisflesh
astheyearswentby.Infootball,onlytheballwasintendedtobekicked,nottheplayer.Anyonewhorefusedto
respectthisdeservedtobethreatenedwithadeterrentwhichwouldpunishnotonlytheoffenderbuthiswhole
teamaswell.
WilliamMcCrumwasnotadaydreamingzealotandadvocatorofold-fashionedideals.Hewasagoalkeeperfor
Milford,asmallvillageclubthatplayedintheIrishChampionship’sfirstseasonin1890-91.AsagoalkeeperMc
Crumhadeveryopportunitytowitnessthewayinwhichthepurityofsportwasbeingcorruptedbyfoulplay.He
hadfeltfirst-handtheeffectsofbreachesoftherulesandsimilarunsportingbehaviouronthefield.
Thepenaltykick,ofcourse,isthekindofpenaltythatonlyagoalkeepercouldhaveinvented,asuprememomentof
dramaandself-sacrificethatplacesthegoalkeeper,generallyabystander,atthecentreofthestage.Yes,itstacks
theoddsagainstthegoalie,butitdoesmakehim,heroically,eventragicallythestaroftheshow.McCrum’slove
forthetheatreandtheatricalsmayhavepromptedhimtocomeupwiththeidea.Healsoheldaninfluential
positionintheIrishFootballAssociationandhadaflairforadministrationandpolitics,withoutwhichhis
revolutionaryideawouldhardlyhavebeenimplemented.
