Welcome to the 2015 Cogent International Beef Catalogue. In this issue you will find
an even more exceptional line-up of sires compared to last year. We offer a selection
of easy calving sires ideal for producing valuable cross-bred beef calves from your dairy

breeds to deliver maximum genetic gain for the beef producer.
Sires highlighted as calving ease sires, have been proven for use on dairy cows. All of
these bulls have graduated from Cogent’s highly successful and well regarded, Cogent
Visions Young Sire Programme. Sires which enter the programme are selected from

Cogent Beef Visions – Calving Ease Survey
Cogent beef calving survey forms are sent out to all UK dairy farmers who have
purchased Visions young sire beef straws. A bull is well is well proven once a
minimum of 250 surveys per bull are completed and returned to Cogent.

Calvings are scored on a scale 1 to 5:

The calving ease is calculated on the percentage of scores in each of the five
categories from each survey:
Gestation Length
Both the service date and the date of calving are recorded on the Cogent beef
calving survey.
The number of days between the service date and calving date are calculated which
then creates the gestation length. For each bull is then an average calculated from
all returned surveys.
The UK average gestation length is 282 days – this is breed dependent for beef.
