Peter Jones Foundation

WELCOME
LETTER
FROM OUR FOUNDER
I am so pleased that you are thinking of applying
to be Head of Schools Programme at the
Peter Jones Foundation.
This role will be enormously rewarding and a great opportunity to
make a real impact within the Foundation and with the young people
we work with. The successful candidate will lead our school based
provision, running our flagship national programme, Tycoon in
Schools, as well as developing organisational strategy.
Our primary aim is to drive a society-wide revolution that encourages
self-belief in individuals so that they can think differently and
creatively about their next steps. Ultimately, the aim is to help children
develop essential enterprise and employability skills.
The Peter Jones Foundation continues to enjoy great progress year on
year. Thanks to the rising success of our two core programmes –
Tycoon in Schools and The Peter Jones Enterprise Academy – we are
improving the prospects of more young people than ever before.
Building on our strengths and achievements to date, this is an exciting
opportunity for a passionate, creative and inspiring educational leader
to drive the development of our flagship schools programme, Tycoon in
Schools. There will also be significant and meaningful opportunity to
contribute to the organisation’s future direction, as we are preparing to
write our next five-year strategy.
If this sounds exciting and you want to work with a dedicated team and
committed Board of Trustees to inspire and support young people then
we want to hear from you.
Yours Sincerely
Peter Jones CBE

OUR MISSION

To give young people the chance of a brighter future by providing them with help and assistance,
largely through academic means, so that they can make a real difference to themselves and the
community in which they belong. The principal means by which this is achieved is through enterprise
and employability learning in the school and further education sectors.

Tycoon in Schools
Tycoon in Schools is the Foundation’s flagship school

resources and lesson plans to work through with their pupils.
The children work in teams to come up with a business idea
and write a plan for how to launch and run their activity.
We then lend pupils the money to run their business and they
trade over a seven-week competition within their Key Stage.
The loan we make them is a ‘goodwill’ loan, and if they lose
money they don’t pay us back. However, with our support the
vast majority of teams are able to make a profit and able to pay
back the loan. They then invest any profits they make into
growing their business, or donate them to a charitable cause of
their choice. At the end of the seven-week period pupils write
an evaluation of their activity, reflecting on the skills they have
developed along the way.
The evaluation they complete, along with their business plan
and trading record is submitted as an entry into our national
competition. The ability to run a successful business is an
important factor in the competition, however, judges also look
at teamwork, social impact, planning and originality in the
judging criteria. After all entries have been reviewed, the
winners are announced at a special ceremony that we are
fortunate enough to host at Buckingham Palace.
6
Tycoon in Schools Impact and Future
Since we started the competition in 2012 we have partnered with 261 schools, supporting over 6400 pupils to start a business.
Our programme is designed to develop enterprise and employability skills amongst our pupils. A recent evaluation of our
programme highlights that pupils show significant development of their skills in four key areas:
•
•
•
•
76% of pupils significantly develop their teamwork skills
71% of pupils significantly develop their communication skills
76% of pupils significantly develop their self-confidence
63% of pupils significantly develop their financial literacy
One additional outcome of the programme that we are extremely proud of is the fact that the vast majority of our teams go on to
run a successful business and make a profit. Last year, 89.25% of our teams made a profit, which in total amounted to over
£34,000. This in turn was donated to additional school projects and charitable causes in the local communities we work with.
Whilst there are a handful of other charities supporting young people to start a business, our programme is unique in that we
provide our programme and resources free of charge as well as the money to run it (through our goodwill loans), unlike other
providers of similar charitable programmes. This means that we can work with disadvantaged pupils and special needs children,
including several deaf schools, that might not otherwise be able to run the programme. Indeed, last year we worked closely with
eight Special Needs Providers and had a total of 55 deaf pupils and many others with specific learning needs successfully
competing alongside our mainstream school teams.
Traditionally, the Tycoon programme sat as part of our education team’s annual provision. Having now run the programme for
five years, we have seen the impact it can have and want to deliver the programme to a larger group of pupils. We are therefore
creating a new position and hiring a Head of Schools Programme to lead the Tycoon initiative, who will work closely with our
CEO and senior leadership team to develop and deliver a strategy to refine and expand the programme. Initially this will involve
work in the UK, but in time there may be opportunities to expand the programme internationally. We are also looking to build a
first class web-based platform to help us scale the programme and deepen our impact.
