Food for Thought:
Luke 7:11-17 A survey of the Gospels reveals many ways in which Jesus upheld the dignity of women. In a
culture where women were considered second-class citizens, Jesus was never afraid to encounter women, to affirm them, and to welcome
them among his followers. Here we see that his heart was stirred by the situation of this grieving mother. The man who had died was “the
only son of his mother, and she was a widow.” In this culture, a woman was protected by her father, her husband, or her son. Absent one of
those men in her life, she was in an incredibly vulnerable position. This, along with the grief of losing her child, struck the Lord with pity.
And then, he did the impossible and restored the dead man to life. After “the dead man sat up ... Jesus gave him to his mother.” Jesus made a
point to restore and affirm this woman’s vocation as a mother. Christ himself reveals, through his ministry to this mother, that her role is
vital. May we also find ways to affirm and serve the mothers in our midst.
GRADUATES HEAR MESSAGE TO BE REALLIFE HEROES: Steven Spielberg, well known filmmaker, was guest
speaker at the 2016 Harvard University graduation last week. During their commencement ceremony, he
challenged them to become the heroes in a world full of villains; as he invoked stories from his films and his life
encouraging them to take on the world's woes “A hero needs a villain to vanquish, and you're all in luck. This
world is full of monsters. There's racism, homophobia, ethnic hatred, class hatred. There's political hatred and
there's religious hatred. The answer is to question voices of authority, to seek defining character moments in
your own life and to learn from the past. The way you create a better future is by studying the past. Atrocities
are happening right now, so we wonder, not just, “When did this hatred end?” but “How did it begin?” Steven
Spielberg related that he was bullied as a child for being Jewish, and he warned that anti- Semitism and
Islamophobia are on the rise. To combat them, he urged students to listen to others' stories and to share their
own. “The only answer to more hate is more humanity. We have to replace fear with curiosity.” He told them
that he had dropped out of California State University Long Beach in the 1960s to take a job at Universal
Studios but later returned and earned a degree in 2002. He did it to stress the importance of education to his
children. “Some go for parents, but I went for my kids. It helped that they gave me course credit in
paleontology for my work on 'Jurassic Park.'” Early in his career, Spielberg said that he had focused on making
escapist movies conjured from his imagination. But that later he learned the power of creating movies based on
historical events, however horrific, gave him a sense of mission. “I hope you all find that sense of mission. Don't
turn away from what's painful. Examine it; challenge it. My goal is to create a world that lasts two hours. Your
job is to create a world that lasts forever.”

Once again, I am beating Fr Roy on my "vacation break" this year. He is
not "GOING" until July, but I will be "GONE, GONE, GONE" from
June 9th until July 15th when hopefully the air plane will bring me
back "safe and sound" - at least my body will be here; my spirit will still
be in Dublin, Georgia with my grand daughter who recently joined the
ranks of "the teenage world". There are plenty of fellow parishioners to
fill in while I am "away". ~ Betty Krumlauf
Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and
the beggar and the beaten, and seeing them the holy
one went down into deep prayer and cried, “Great
God, how is it that a loving Creator can see such
things and yet do nothing about them?”
And out of the long silence, God said, “I did
something. I made you.”
The Community breakfast celebrations throughout each month
are held at different venues in Cottage Grove. The Elks, VFW,

Vincent De Paul services in Cottage Grove. We also donate to
the church, OLPH and when needed Beds For Freezing Nights
