“e higher your blood cholesterol level the greater
the risk for developing heart disease or having a
heart attack”.
Full Cholesterol
(Lipid) Profile
WHY MEASURING CHOLESTEROL IS IMPORTANT?
Cholesterol is vital for normal body function but high cholesterol levels increase the
risk of coronary heart disease and disease of the arteries.
•
Heart disease is the number one killer of women and men in Ireland with 22% of
premature deaths (under age 65) caused by cardiovascular disease.
•
The higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risks for developing
heart disease or having a heart attack.
To help gauge your cardiovascular health you need to establish your cholesterol levels
as this can be a good indicator, this cannot be taken in isolation as other factors need
to be taken into account.

Quality control procedures are in place
to ensure that your results are accurate
at the time of testing.
WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?
The process involves either a painless finger prick or a sample being taken from
your vein. The sample is then processed by our state of the art Biochemistry
analyser which produces a full cholesterol profile.
Depending on your results the screening nurse will provide either lifestyle advice
on how to reduce your cholesterol level or a referral to your GP may be
recommended for further investigation.

In Ireland there are over 30,000
people living with undetected
Diabetes.
Diabetes Tests
WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a condition caused by a lack of, or insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is a
hormone, a substance of importance that is made by the pancreas. Diabetes is a
serious condition and within Ireland there are an estimated 30,000 people living with
undetected Diabetes.
There are two main types of Diabetes;
6
•
Type 1 Diabetes normally occurs in childhood or early adult life, and requires
treatment with insulin injections. It is caused by the body’s own immune
system destroying the insulin-making cells (beta-cells) of the pancreas.
•
Type 2 Diabetes usually develops slowly in adulthood. It is progressive and can
sometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but more often Type 2 diabetes
may require anti-diabetic medicine and/or insulin injections.

“Respiratory Disease is the most common reason
to visit the G.P. Over a fih of people will visit
their G.P at least once a year because of a
respiratory condition”.
Lung Function
(Spirometry) test
Lung problems can arise from a number of areas such as;
•
Cigarette smoking
•
Working environment
•
Genetic disorders
•
Exposure to certain chemicals.
WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?
To perform Spirometry test a person provides an exhalation into a filtered mouthpiece
which is then measured by a Spirometer giving an indication of lung health.
The Spirometry test enables the nurse to detect symptoms of Respiratory Disease
before they become apparent. The results of the tests are given in certain values,
which the nurse will explain.

Blood Pressure
WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?
LUNG FUNCTION /
BLOOD PRESSURE
HEALTHCARE SCREENING
“In the 18 – 44 age bracket more than 67,000 adults in
Ireland have been diagnosed with High blood pressure,
this number increases to 950,000 amongst adults over
the age of 45 with 600,000 remaining undiagnosed”.
Blood Pressure relates to blood moving around the body and as it
moves it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The
strength of this pushing is your blood pressure.
WHY IS YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IMPORTANT?
High Blood Pressure, or hypertension, is the single most common contributor to
cardiovascular death, stroke, heart attacks, heart failure and end stage kidney disease.
Low Blood Pressure or hypotension is when blood pressure drops too low, it can
restrict the amount of blood flowing to your brain and other vital organs, which can
cause fainting or dizziness and light headedness. This table below shows the
classification of blood pressure for adults who are 18 years and older.

HEALTHCARE SCREENING
Any cardiac tests carried out within our health
screening programmes will be subject to review by
our Consultant Cardiologist.
Cardiac Screening
WHAT IS CARDIAC SCREENING?
ECG Heart Screening measures the electrical activity within the heart that causes
your heart to beat. During the test, a number of electrodes are connected to your
arms, legs and chest and these pick up the electrical activity within the heart.
An ECG can show a number of Heart Conditions including:
•
A previous Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
•
An Enlarged Heart that is working under strain
•
Fast, slow or irregular heartbeats (Arrhythmias)
WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED?
As the instance of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) has become more
common among males and females from 15 years of age upwards, especially
individuals who engage in sporting activities should have a cardiac screen.
It is also important as approaching and during middle age that individuals undertake
a comprehensive health screen which would include cardiac tests to screen for
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).
Screening may include but is not limited to an Electrocardiogram (ECG), Blood
Pressure Measurement, Body Mass Index (BMI), Lung Function (Spirometry) and
relevant Blood Tests such as Blood Cholesterol.
WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?
Electrodes will be attached to your chest, arms and legs. These are then connected
to the ECG instrument. After tests have been carried out, your results will be
reviewed and reported on by our Consultant Cardiologist.

your organisation stay protected & protect your employees. To help your organisation
prevent influenza we offer Influenza (Flu) vaccination for your employees at your own

Ergonomic Services
WHAT IS ERGONOMICS
Ergonomics is about ensuring a good fit between people and the equipment they interact
with. This could include the objects they use and the environment around them. Healthcare
Screening Ireland will come on site and carry out individual assessments (and the
accompanying eye test where indicated) and provide a full report and recommendations.
We will also make any corrections we can to the work station on the day. We look at the
individual when they are seated at the work station and therefore it is essential that the
employees are there on the day. Our assessment covers the statutory elements under the
2007 Regulations including assessment of the:
•
Desk
•
Chair
•
Monitor, keyboard, mouse and other peripherals such as phone, document
holders etc
•
IT software, temperature, lighting, heating and ventilation where indicated.
Where the employee identifies that there may be a potential musculo-skeletal issue
which we think may present in the future our Occupational Health Nurse will carry
out a Musculo Skeletal Questionnaire. Following review of this we can then further
advise the employer. We can offer advice to employers regarding:
•
Recommendations for job modification
•
Treatment advice and management
•
Referral to specialist treatment services where required
•
Advice on safe rehabilitation to full duties
We will offer further occupational health review of repetitive strain and other musculoskeletal work related cases to ensure that the employee’s condition is not exacerbated
by their work. This will be included in the above fees.
