Fibres - nylon
From the dictionary, Internet or Encarta find the answers to these questions.
Answer in sentences.
What is nylon?
Nylon is a class of synthetic material that can be moulded.
From what is it made?
coal, air, water and other substances
What types of clothes are made from nylon?
stockings, shirts, blouses, ties, bathers
What other things are made from nylon?
parachute material, toothbrushes, tents, coating products
Nylon is described as a “synthetic fibre”. Describe what this means.
It is manmade (synthesized) from natural things as opposed to wool which comes from
a sheep.
Write the opposite of the word “synthetic”.
natural
Explain why nylon is such an important fibre today.
It is light, strong and easily made into fine fibres for making products
The nylon fibres (filaments) which are produced are much finer than most natural fibres.
They have a much higher tensile strength than natural fibres.
What does this mean and what is its advantage?
If the filament (string) is fine it can be made into light fabrics like parachute material but
it is strong (high tensile strength) and it does not break easily. Thus a parachute is light
but strong.
Find 10 ways nylon is used. Draw and label the products.
Where possible, write the plural of each product .
