Dear Families,
As part of our Site Improvement Plan (SIP) staff are continuing their professional
learning within the Mathematics learning area. In particular we are looking at how
we effectively provide students, at all ages and at all ability levels, with rich learning
opportunities. I wonder what your first response would be if I asked you about
yourself as a Mathematician. Research tells us that Mathematics is an area that is
loved or not even loved a little bit! Today’s learners are very quick to pick up on our
attitude to Mathematics. Even as teachers, it is important that we provide students
with self-belief to tackle any problem they are faced with. We want to create
powerful learners who can think deeply about problem solving in unfamiliar
situations. Beliefs and attitudes impact on student learning. Students need support to
develop self-confidence to approach complex reasoning problems as they
continue through the year level achievement standards within the Australian
Curriculum. Staff are engaging in workshops, readings, trials and collaborative
planning to explore Ann Baker’s Natural Mathematics Strategies. Ann operates on
the premise that we need to bridge the gap between today’s education research
and day to day classroom practice to ensure our practices support effective
implementation of mathematics learning opportunities for students. Staff at Fairview
Park have linked professional learning to Ann Baker’s work to encourage students to
see themselves as capable mathematicians who can work mathematically to
investigate and problem solve. You may have participated in a workshop Ann ran in
our local Tea Tree Gully Partnership. We plan to offer this again in 2015. Take a few
minutes to explore Ann’s website so you can see how it can support you with
mathematical conversations at home. http://naturalmaths.com.au I will keep you
updated on our work in this area. You may wish to discuss this further with teachers
at interview times so you can work in partnership with us to promote positive
attitudes to Mathematics as a learning area.
Warm Regards,
Vanessa Mortimer

Soccer Update
Soccer has been very high on the popularity stakes during recess and lunch play for quite
some time. The high numbers of students participating, across all age groups, has presented
some challenges for students as games are self managed rather than being actively run with
a referee like students experience in club soccer. To address this we have trialled smaller
groups, extra sets of goals, formal class lessons to build skills, student referees, age group
restrictions and many, many conversations and interventions. As a staff group we are
concerned that fair play remains a significant issue. Our first aid records indicate the injury
rate is too high. While we are acutely aware injuries are usually accidental and part of the
high excitement level, we do worry that play rules of ‘no tackling’ are being forgotten. Staff
on yard duty are concerned and class teachers report a flow over into class follow-ups.
Having trialled many proactive measures we are now introducing a ‘red card’ system. Any
student who demonstrates soccer play not consistent with our behaviour code will lose the
right to participate in yard soccer for one week (five school days). We feel this will allow the
games to continue for players who are managing behaviour safely. If your child requires a
red card break from soccer they will receive a note via their Communication Book/ Diary.
Your support to reinforce safety and fair play if this occurs will be highly valued and
appreciated.

Auskick Coordinator Needed
The Norwood Football Club and Fairview Park Park Primary School are looking for an Auskick
Co-ordinator, so we can commence our Auskick program. This program is run for the school through
the Norwood Football Club. It is a volunteer role and has been run previously at the school by either a
parent volunteer or someone from the Norwood Football Club. This year the Norwood Football Club
are unable to provide someone to coordinate the sessions at Fairview Park so we are looking for a
volunteer to run these sessions. If you would be interested please see Madeleine or Sarah at the Front
Office.
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of
belonging for everyone.
In 2015 we celebrate 15 years of Harmony Day. Fairview Park Primary School will once again be
celebrating this special event.
When: Friday 10 April 2015 (last day of term 1)
What to wear: Students are encouraged to dress in the colour orange (official colour of Harmony Day)
or
traditional clothes from other countries (to show cultural diversity). Students are reminded that clothes
must reflect the school dress policy (sun smart clothes). Students who choose not to dress in orange
clothes
or
traditional clothes from another country, should wear school uniform
Cost: All students who participate in Harmony Day are encouraged to give a gold coin donation to
support school projects
Harmony Day events:
All students and staff will eat lunch together in the park. Students should bring their normal lunch or
order from the canteen. This is an event we have been doing for several years and is very popular with
students and staff as it creates a harmonious environment!
Classes will work with their buddy classes in the weeks leading up to Harmony Day on various Harmony
Day activities to create a sense of inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone!
Happy Harmony Day to our Fairview Park Community,

Fundraising
Dear Families,
A meeting will be held this coming Monday morning at 9.10am in the Group Getaway room next to
Area 1 to discuss fundraising for 2015. All past committee members are invited to attend and I’d like to
also extend the invite to any other parents who may wish to join the committee. This is a great
opportunity to be involved and be a part of a team.
2015 is looking to be a great year and I hope to see you all there!
Many thanks
Kelly Wegener
