SFARLIS
Greek Thrace
The name is apparently a Hellenization of Bulgarian "izfurli!", a
dance call meaning to hurl or throw out, although the movement
does not appear in this dance. Dennis Boxell first saw Sfarlis
at a festival in Florina, Greek Macedonia, in 1964, where it was
done by Greek refugees from Bana, a village near Burgas, Bulgarian Thrace, now living near Yiannitsa, Greek Macedonia.
