Notches Third Victory this Season on IBM Course

VeloVoice staff writer
Skip Foley (World T.E.A.M) demonstrated why he is the beast he is, by repeating
his May race victories on the two kilometer
Bethesda circuit in exactly the same fashion: a
30km solo breakaway that the peloton was
powerless to prevent. Even given the distance
and the heat, the riders treated this race more
like a criterium than a road race, as numerous
breakaways formed, dissolved, or were caught
in the opening 30km. On about the seventh
circuit of the course, a break of eight devel-
oped that looked serious. Most of the big
players were back in the field, though, in-

cluding Foley and Frank Negri. When the gap
to the break grew past 30 seconds Foley decided that he had had enough. With a (to this
writer) superhuman effort he towed the pack
to the escapees in just under a lap. And then he
counterattacked to add insult to (grievous)
injury. Now the right individuals were away:
Foley, Doug Davies(Chesapeake Wheelmen),
John Hamblen (Lexus), Joe Deaton (obviously
not affected by his efforts in the 30+race only
1 hour before), and several others. This break
put time on the field for a number of laps the
field seemed to ease off, knowing that all the

Rider Conduct Threatens Local Racing
[Editor's note: The Howard County Police
sent the following letter to Doug Willier after
the MD-DE district championship at the
Mount Airy course. It would appear that no
one took it to heart, given the behavior at the
Labor Day race at the same venue. Riders were
well over the yellow line in all the races, and a
number were still seen relieving themselves
by the side of the road. As we go to press, we
have no word on the attitude of the law after
this race.]

Dear Mr. Willier
I am writing to you in reference to the July 9,
1994 bicycle race, District Road Race
Championship,sponsored by Ultimate Racing.
During the event the below listed violations
were observed by police officers assigned to
control traffic or reported by citizens to these
officers.
* Races were not started on time, requiring our
presence longer than requested.
* Numerous motor vehicle violations by participants, race officials, and spectators before,
during and after the event. These violations
included: stopping in roadway; failure to stop
for stop signs or when entering roadway from
private driveways; failure to use turn signals;
backing in roadway with oncoming traffic;
driving/stopping partially/completely on the
wrong side of roadway (this occurred on roads
with limited sight distance); motorcyclists
(officials) passing in no-passing zones and
ordering motorists off the roadway.
* Reports of cyclists urinating along roadsides.
* Cyclists before, during and after their races
failing to keep on right side of road and
stopping in the road. When told of these violations by officers they offered various excuses, and some required more than one order
to move before doing so.
* Loud use of profanity by racers around
spectators and others.
*Report of a motorcyclist transporting a cyclist as a passenger wearing only a bicycle
helmet.
* Spectators and officials walking in roadway,
some carrying ice chests between them,
forcing motorists to stop or go around them by
crossing double-center lines.
These behaviors endanger the participants,
spectators, and motorists.
Please make your members aware that continued violations will result in denial of future
special events permit requests.
Sincerely
James N Robey, Chief of Police

From The Mike
Words of Wisdom from our Team Director
First and foremost, let me thank
Vickie Kane and the Montgomery Recreation
Department for another successful Montgomery County Criterium Championships. John
Epting did abang-up job and got some more
aay hairs as he, like all of the previous Road
Marshall Coordinators, wondered why in a
club this large we cannot get enough members
to make things easier for everyone. Unfortunately,IBM picked Sundaythe 28th to have an
all-day move, but thanks to Tom Snyder's
bang-up job as marshall, things went well.
Thanks also go out to the same ole crew who
always bails us out by doing more than their
shaze. Troy Pace seemed to have his hands
filled, at what was supposed to be an easy post.
Thanks again follcs.
Well, here it is September, days are
getting shorter, and even temperatures are
getring cooler. What a yeaz: Somerville,
Nationals... Oops, I was supposed to research
to see who our other National championship
medalists were. Let me see if my memory is on
the one. Gold: Jim Montgomery, Paul Didier,
Gerry Nuggent, Bob Schneider, Tracey Armstrong (all Masters) Chris Hoven (Sr). Silver:
Not sure, but I think Gordy Holterman (Intermediate), Jim Montgomery. Bronze: Mary
Pelz, Joe Saunders ... I'm going to have research this and maybe in the final Velo Voice
of fhe year -the one with all the slats -I'll
include the list with more details.
Well, I was lucky enough to see
NCVC in action at home. The twins allowed
me to see the U Street Crit, which was a heck
of a promotion. Got to give Promoter Doug
credit, the guy is a legit Don King.(I stole that
from some guy at the IBM race)The 35+ event
was an exciting race; the crowd was really into
it, and we won in spite of ourselves. Finally,
John Epting and Ed Ayres pulled off some
good teamwork as John slowed the break
down for Chris Henry, and then Ed let out
Chris for the victory. But thaYs where the
teamwork ended as only Ed was thanked for
the leadout. At the start ofthe race, when I saw
the number of red and white jerseys, I thought
to myself,"We'd better win this." Then Erika
shouted "Daddy, your teammates are going to
win, they have the most guys°' The race began
and before long, NCVC had someone off the
front. Pete Reynolds looked good, and NCVC
went to work blocking, but it was too much,
too early. He was caught, but before he was,
there were some useless attempts to bridge by
folks who couldn't, which did not help the
blocking effort. Next off on the break was
sprint-king Chris sort of hoping that someone
would join him. The only problem was that no
one knew this, so NCVC went to work
blocking just as effectively as the first time
with only one useless attempt to bridge. It
always looks easier on TV, because of the
editing. The gap was a big enough to make the
break stick, but Chris was caught between the
devil and the deep blue seas, as he didn't want
to go it alone, but the gap was tempring, and
the blocking was on the money. Eventually he
was caught, and John and Ed got away with
Gus Fenario (Snow Valley) and Joe Deacon
(Snow Valley). Once again NCVC went to
work; Chris jumped and escaped, while John
and Ed slowed up the break. Deaton and
Fenario pleaded with them not to, as they
thought that Chris might bring the pack with
him. He didn't, though, and NCVC ended up
with four guys in the money as Bruce took the
field sprint for 8th. Ex-NCVC'er Gene Petrella took off and came close to Chris for 6th
place. T'he Montgomery Railroad showed that
he still had what it takes, as he took off with
two to go like a bat out of hell, and stayed
away for 7th.
Chong Tenn Oh So Close
Takes Third at Masters Road Championship
By Chris Chong Tenn
We arrived in Augusta, GA on
Wednesday,July 20 for the 1994 Fresca Masters road and criterium National championships. Aubrey Gordon and I had finally secured aroom at Days Inn at 7PM where the
bikes were reassembled for a warm nights
dde under the street lights.
Several hours later, a field in excess
of 120 riders were eager and ready for a shot at
the 35-39 road championship at Port Gordon.
The announcer laid out the rules and instructions for the race course, and off we went
on a rush to the front of the pack. On the first
of four undulating laps, the field was cautious
and noncombative with many eyes resting on
Californian Glenn Winkel. Approaching the
second lap, a four man group was allowed
more than 40 seconds over a field of heatconscious riders. After a 24 km first lap familiarization of the course, groups of riders
began unleashing their unbridled passion for
gold in an attempt to reel in the breakaway
riders. The sporadic attempts were futile as the
four-man break appeared serious on their
mission. On completing 48 km on the second
lap Slawik Podjowozniak, myself, and another
companion broke from the field following the
feed hill. Within two miles we were joined by
Ed Beamon as the four-man break ahead was
back in sight. Soon we were reeled in by the
chasing field, which included Paul Curley,
Tom Masterson, Barney Baxter, Winkel, John
Frey, Dulaney, Brian Johnston and a quiet
Hugh Walton. Up ahead the leading four were
ultimately doomed.
On lap three, Winkel made a
number of moves to dislodge himselffrom the
heated field, whose will was still focused on a
championship jersey and four other medals.
"If only I could get a big lead with a small
group of riders, then I would have a good shot
at winning,"I thought to myself on lap number
three. One more futile attempt left me reeling
for breath as I sank to the rear of the field,
barely hanging on.
A Forza bar and some water helped
me recover with four miles remaining in the
final lap. Out of water, but feeling better, I
wentforward again. With just over a kilometer
to go, the quite Walton dashed ahead with a
winning move as the sprint-crazy bunch
watched without responding. With 600 meters
to go,the head of the pack was disinterested in
Walton, who appeared unstoppable. In the
midday heat on the uncaring hill, everyone
was in a frenzy for leadouts. With this realization, Imade adesperate bid to uncoil
Walton's lead inside 500 meters. There was a
glimmer of hope as I crested the hill, but inside
200 meters, hope went out the back door as I
succumbed to leg cramps and Joe Deaton, who
finished second. I had given 100% but fell
short for third place. Aubrey finished in 10th
spot.

were the NCVC team for the day. After a few
laps there were just four guys dueling for not
only the overall win, but the special Sprint
Prize. The NCVC guys decided to go for the
first sprint, Myron led out Shuaib successfully
for a win. Second sprint -guess what?--a rerun. The other two in the group were now not
happy campers and started to coast. At that
point, Shu was beginning to feel a little bad,so
he took a long pull and while recovering one
of his disgruntled breakaway partners jumped.
He immediately responded with a chase, but
could not catch. Myron went to work one more
time and led Shuaib out for a very exciting 2nd

In the Masters 45+ Time Trial, Myron
went down to business and finally broke the
hour by 24 seconds to win his second gold
medal. He credits John E for advising him not
to give up on himself. He didn't and was
victorious.
NID/DE District Road Race Championship for 30+: Seven laps of a 7.5 mile
circuit. Defending champ (and ex-NCVC'er)
Matt McGoey took some time out from his
new store to defend his title, Mark Neff,
defending bronze medalist, and Ivan Baines
were there to help. Ivan did get his chance to
help when Matt flatted on the 2nd lap. Just
like they do in the Pros, he gave Matt his rear

is it CHEERS!)(Now we see why he is the
reigning Wheelie cup Teamwork king). According to Mark,"IfIvan was not in the race, it
would have been the end of the day for Matt,
with no real chance to defend his jersey."
However Ivan's Sean-Yates-power was
missed, as the field was quick to chase down
attempted breaks and then revert to its slow
pace again. The race ended in a sprint which
was taken byformer Cat N KING "Big Dave"

Cumberland Criterium Cat 3: Appazently Cary Bland needed more of a wane-up.
There was a surge by the field and reflex action made his legs respond by going at the
same speed, which soon saw him dangling off
the back. "I just wanted to make mention of
Mr. Mike Medina for some Wheelie Points; he
towed me up to a break and set me up for the
field sprint," commented Chris Henry.
Mt Nebo Road Race, Lancaster Pa cat

"This is a good road race for a very fit rider.
Unfortunately that wasn't me." With wet
roads, lots of sharp downhill turns, and a 39 X
23 WALL to climb six rimes, this was not an
easy race! Of course if you have a back that
rebels when asked to climb killer hills like this
one, you should have Team your lesson and not
even attempt races with such climbs -but they
are (or use to be) so much fun!!! Anyway the
B-man was pleased to finish 30th, especially
since half the starters saw the finish from the
side lines. But as he stated, "It wasn't pretty. I
spent the entire race overcoming riders that
had been chewed up and excreted out the
group that was able to make it up the wall in
the first lap."
Tour de Lititz Cat 3: This was a nifty
little race in a very nice Pa town. It was like a
Criterium/Circuit race over 6.5 miles aver a
rolling course with speeds of around 28 mph
most of the race "I couldn't tell you what the
final screamer of a lap was, as my computer

paying places were up the road. Unfortunately,
the pack did not ease up enough to keep this
reporter in the race, as the heat and the previous night's revelry took its toll on his aching
head and tired legs.
Meanwhile, up the road a bit, peace and
tranquility reigned in the breakaway. That is
until Foley decided that the finish line was
close enough to be rid of his excess baggage.
"Beam me up,Scotty," and Foley was gone.
Davies, Deaton, and Hamblen hung tough, but
the rest of the breakaway went back to visit
their friends in the field. Lap after lap Foley
stroked away in the big chainring; each lap
extended his lead over the field. The chasing
three held steady at about 30 seconds. As
Foley prepared to lap the field, a small group,
that would contain the final paying place,
detached itself from the front. With about four
to go, Foley made contact with the headhanging, grimacing elements of the tail of the
field. No such safe haven awaited the chasing
three, who would have ride the extra lap denied to the field. A surprising finish saw Foley
duking it out in the field sprint. Was it a worry
that the chasers would catch the pack in the
final lap, or was it simply a show of dominance?
The old guys put on a really animated
show in the Master 30+ race. There was a
serious breakaway of some sort for nearly the
entire 60km. Most contained at least one, if
not two, NCVC riders. Unfortunately, it
fumed out to be the all-to-common NCVC
finish, with too many red and white jerseys
doing too much work, too early. With only a
few laps to go, everything came together. After biding his time in the field, fireman Joe
Deaton (ABRT/Snow Valley) rolled away
from the field at the top of the hill. The high
speed and relentless attacks of the morning
had taken its toll on the legs of the peloton,
and no one reacted to his escape. Deaton put
his head down and rolled in to the finish with
a comfortable margin, slowing only eo discard
his shades to lighten the load. "Didn't want to
waste the photo-op",he was overheard to say...
Several bone-breaking crashes marred
the category 4 race. The field was ail together
for the big uphill finish sprint, where NCVC
was shut out. In the category 5 race a citizen
upstaged the USCF boys to take the final sprint.
The field split early in the womens race,
with the leading four gaining more than an
minute over the trailing six. Although the The
field split early in the womens race, with the
leading four gaining more than an minute over
the trailing six. Although the crowd opined
that Jennifer Ramelmeier (MD District
Champion) would roast the three Snow Valley
women in the sprint, as they seem to have
made no effort to work her over, she faded
before the line to finish fourth. NCVC's own
Cary Weil was just nipped at the line for the
final paying place.

Course: A 2 km circuit with a slight uphill
finish and two turns. In a change from the race
there in May, the backside of the course had
developed a lazge sinkhole, that forced the
field to funnel down to a single lane. Temperatures started out cool, but rose through the
day, reaching nearly 90F by the start of the
