Issue 1 @SirIsaac6thForm http://www.isaacnewtonsixthform.co.uk/ Welcome to the first edition of Gravity Matters for the academic year 2016-17. Our Gravity Matters newsletter will be sent out three weekly and will contain information about events and important dates. Message from the Head of Sir Isaac Newton I would like to welcome all of our new students and parents to Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form. The sixth form is a flurry of excited new students, ready to embark on a fantastic two year programme. Our year 13 students are ready to face the challenge of their A levels, and are showing great motivation and determination already. The new elective programme is up and running with students having the choice to join table tennis, STEP maths, EPQ and the Jungle Book musical on a Tuesday; football club, cooking club, chemistry Olympiad and medical, veterinary and dentistry society on a Wednesday; and SIN talk and mindfulness on a Thursday. Duke of Edinburgh will be starting in the coming weeks, as will orchestra and choir. Our first parent event is happening next week. The wellbeing evening is a chance to meet our pastoral team, as well as external professional. You will also be able to attend taster sessions on mindfulness and meet some of the external agencies we work with to ensure all student receive the appropriate support. Students are more than welcome to attend this event along with their parents. It will be a great opportunity to meet some of the team who support all of our students. We also have our first parents evening on the 11th October, this is for year 12 parents only. We will be following up with a year 13 parents evening on the 5th December. If any year 13 parents or carers would like any feedback on their students’ progress before parents evening please do not hesitate to email either their form tutor or [email protected]. Autumn 2016 I know all staff are extremely excited about the year ahead and are looking forward to meeting parents in the coming weeks. Engineering expertise at SIN: STEMnet is a voluntary network of experts in their field. We are privileged to be hosting Peter Semaine on Wednesday 28th September at 3.30. Peter's area of expertise is engineering and he has worked in several roles in many countries. Our students with aspirations to follow an engineering career are invited to attend room 3.05 to hear Peter's experiences first-hand and ask his advice about career paths, university study and the wider benefits of these exciting careers. His knowledge is second to none and it will provide an excellent opportunity for students to have their questions answered. We look forward to seeing all those interested students on Wednesday. Richard Champeney TSST Session We welcomed teachers from different subject backgrounds on Wednesday for an Introductory Session of the TSST Course. The school is running the course designed to train teachers who are specialists in other subjects to be confident to teach maths or physics. The course will integrate a range of both online and face to face sessions, boosting participant’s subject knowledge and the pedagogy behind teaching these subjects. We are looking forward to the course throughout the following year and the opportunity to ensure a high quality of teaching of these subjects locally! Data collection Please send all completed data collection sheets to form tutors by Friday 30th September.
