Pencil
A pencil is a tool for writing or drawing. The main
components of a pencil are graphite and clayey. The graphite
and clayey are mixed by a special ratio and are enveloped in thin wood. A pencil has its origin in
a thin *lead stick, in ancient Rome. The first pencil was made in Nuremberg, Germany in 1662.
During the industrial revolution, pencil industries were developed. The pencil can be graded by

the hardness and blackness of the graphite. The pencil can be classified by the material used to
make the pencil and how to use the pencil.
History of pencil
In ancient Rome, the origin of the pencil was thin *lean stick and often used scratching on
papyrus. According Pencils.com, “The first mass-produced pencils were made in Nuremberg,
Germany in 1662. There an active pencil industry developed with famous companies like FaberCastell established in 1761, Lyra, Steadtler and others growing throughout the 19th century
industrial revolution.”
History of graphite
Graphite was found in Borrowdale, England in 1564. Graphite was darker than lead but it was
easy to break. It needed to have a holder. At first, graphite was wrapped with string. Later, the
graphite was enveloped in thin wood.

America imported pencils from Europe until after the American Revolution. In early 1812,
William Munroe produced the first wood-cased pencil in the Boston. Joseph Dixon Crucible
Company (now Dixon Ticonderoga) and other factories established and manufactured pencils in
New York.
Grading of pencil
In the grading system, “H” indicates hardness, “B” indicates blackness, and “F” indicates fine
point. If a pencil has a high number and an H grade, it means it is harder and lighter. If a pencil
has a high number and a B grade, it is softer and darker. The HB grade pencil is the most
common writing pencil. The following grading system shows how pencils are used by gradation:
9H~7H: Usually use for drafting in hard material such as stone
6H~3H: usually use for a design drawing
2H~B: usually use for general writing
2B~3B: usually use for writing stenographic records
4B~6B: usually use for drawing by artist.

Types of pencil
A pencil can be classified by how it should be used and what materials are used to make it.
Comment: Good diagram
Graphite pencils: They are the most common pencils. They were made by mixing graphite and
clay in a special ratio. Their scale of darkness varies from light grey to black (9H to 9B).
Charcoal pencils: They are made of charcoal. They are blacker than graphite pencils, but they
tend to smudge and break more easily than graphite pencils.
Crayon pencils: They are known as coloured pencils. They are blended with pigment, graphite,
and clay.

Comment: Use the American spelling, “color”
(colour is British)
Grease pencils: They can be used on any surface including glass, plastic, metal and photographs.
They are wrapped in paper. They come in various colors just as crayon pencils.
