Dr. Kelly Charles suggested that teachers can review the areas in which students
have scored below a 3. Determine a corrective course of action to improve student
outcomes. Document results.
TaskStream Status and Updates for 2013 – 2014
Performance Artifact and Trigger Courses – Programs may need to identify which
courses give students their first experience or artifact
due in TaskStream. This is helpful because students
may need to pay for access to TaskStream, similar to
their purchase of textbooks. This would alleviate the
University’s expenses for providing TaskStream
access.
Trigger Courses do not have to be evidence courses.
Dr. Saundra Shorter suggested EDUC 690 for the
MED program. Dr. Kimberly Smith-Burton suggested
EDUC 610 for the MAT program.
Dr. Kelly Charles mentioned that students would be given access to TaskStream
for three years so that they wouldn’t have to sign up each year.
There was a discussion of using EDUC 331 as a trigger course, necessitating
TaskStream access. It would not be in the curriculum during the fall. However, a
proposal may be submitted to the Board of Governors.
Dr. Leontye Lewis stated that iPads may be required for certain courses to prepare
students to use them in teaching. Students would be required to purchase them
using financial aid. The trigger course for iPads will be EDUC 331 (for Bachelorseeking students and Licensure Only).
Dr. Kelly Charles mentioned that the iPads would need iTunes, which will allow
students to download educational applications.
Dr. Leontye Lewis described accountability measures such as using a proctor at a
site to ensure test-taking integrity.
Dr. Saundra Shorter stated that tests may need to be revised to facilitate more
explanation of answers. For instance, a student may answer multiple-choice and
short-answer questions, then use a brief essay question to explain their ideas. This
would apply to online exams as well. It allows our programs to model the practice
of designing questions that measure critical thinking.
The group discussed measures to guard against the misuse of financial aid. For
instance, students may sign up for a trigger course to get an iPad, not attend the
course, and receive financial aid. Then the student may continue to enroll in the
course in subsequent semesters. This may be circumvented by limiting the
number of times a student may retake the course, imposing GPA requirements to

continue in the program, advising low-performing students to seek majors for
which they are better suited, etc.
s. Dr. Kelly Charles asked the group “How many times can a student submit an
evidence for evaluation?” The group discussed issues related to incomplete
grades, graduation, and program policies. There may be a need for an
undergraduate policy and a graduate policy. Dr. Leontye Lewis suggested that
departments need to determine the most appropriate policies for their situation.
Dr. Kelly Charles reminded the group to consider that some students may cross
more than one department.
Internship / Clinical Experience Evaluations
a. Update Transition Points for all Programs
i. Programs that have no internships (B-K Non-teaching program, MED,
etc.) may need to update transition points.
ii. Dr. Leontye Lewis clarified that we can make a note that there is no
internship for the MED program. NCATE holds us accountable for doing
what we say we will do. If we specify that the internship is not required,
NCATE will accept it.
iii. Dr. Kelly Charles inquired about programs that do not have a clinical or
field experience. They may need different transition points.
b. Electronic Data Collection / Evaluation
2012 – 2013 Surveys
a. In TaskStream, surveys can be found under Standard Two. Dr. Kelly Charles
displayed a few examples online.
b. Students and alumni had the opportunity to participate in online surveys about
their experience in the Teacher Education programs.
c. Employers – Dr. Kelly Charles shared a possible strategy to improve employer
participation in the surveys. FSU may sponsor an event inviting local
superintendents to a roundtable discussion. A lunch can be provided and hard
copies of the surveys may be given to the participants.
