Confession The three pillars of the observance of the forty days of Lent are prayer, Lent is an ideal time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, also fasting and almsgiving (charity). Regular and special times of prayer are known as Confession. If you’ve never made your Confession before, or haven’t done so for a long time, why not speak to Fr Richard or set out below: Fr David to find out more? The forty days of Lent (excluding Sundays) are a time for sobriety and moderation. Perhaps by giving something up, you will save money which can in turn be donated to our Lent charity (below). The tradition of abstinence dictates that we should on all Fridays (of the year, excluding solemnities) avoid eating meat, to prompt us to consider Our Lord’s sacrifice on Good Friday. The practice of fasting also suggests that on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday we should reduce our intake of food to - at most - one light meal and two small snacks. This is a sign of, and prompt to, penitence for our sins. You are encouraged to take seriously these disciplines as you embark on your pilgrimage through Lent. Almsgiving Our Lent charity this year is The College of St Barnabas, Lingfield (founded 1895) - a residential community of retired Anglican clergy, who have given years - and often a lifetime - of service in the Church. The Residents are cared for in a peaceful, comfortable and spiritual environment. Many are unable to meet the costs that such care entails, yet no one is prevented from becoming a Resident through shortage of means. The College has no historic endowments, and as a registered Charity raises funds to sustain its work. A former honorary assistant priest at St George’s, Fr Michael Shields, is resident at the College. The Chaplain, Fr Howard Such, will be our preacher on Sunday, 19 March (Lent 3). Please consider setting aside a sum each week during Lent, to support this worthy cause. A second collection will be taken after Mass each Sunday for your donations. Please collect a jam jar, and consider putting into it at least 50p per day, the cost of a single pint of milk.
