New all-through mixed 4-18 comprehensive in Redbridge.
In September 2012 Isaac Newton Academy opened with its inaugural cohort of 180 year 7
students. The school will grow, year on year, to become an 11-18 academy of 1250 students
with specialist status in mathematics and music. In 2014 the primary phase of the academy
opened to 90 reception-aged children. This too will grow each year, until full in September
2020.
We open our sixth form, in purpose-built, state of the art accommodation, in September
2017. We will welcome Year 12 students from other schools as well as Isaac Newton
Academy.
We are looking to appoint an inspirational teacher and leader who shares our belief in the
highest standards of academic attainment in a comprehensive setting. This is a rare
opportunity to be centrally involved in establishing an outstanding school from its early
stages. The successful candidate will be a central figure in establish the culture and ethos
within the Sixth Form. This role is suited to an exceptional Middle Leader.
Initial responsibilities will be for:

Working with the Vice Principal to ensure that there are effective pastoral systems
and procedures, consistently implemented by all staff, to ensure a positive learning
environment at all times

Overseeing the academic culture, learning and progress of the students in the Sixth
Form

Leading the transition of students at key points during the KS5 experience.

Leading a team of Sixth Form tutors

Ensuring effective parental engagement and communication.

Embedding systems and procedures to ensure effective independent study of
students.

Embedding systems and procedures to ensure that students have successful, high
quality UCAS applications.












To work with the Vice Principal i/c Sixth Form to ensure effective pastoral systems
and procedures are consistently implemented across the Sixth Form.
To be the pastoral leader for Sixth Form students.
To maintain a presence around the school to ensure that the highest standards of
behaviour and site-usage are upheld
To maintain a teaching timetable, modelling outstanding practice in terms of
classroom teaching, preparation, marking and assessment
To be a teacher of reading (along with all Academy staff)
To contribute to the strategic leadership of the Academy, developing, implementing
and evaluating systems, policies and procedures
To contribute to discussions and decisions at Extended Leadership Team meetings
To communicate and liaise with staff, students, parents, governors and members of
the local community as appropriate
To be active in issues of staff and student welfare and support
To actively promote the academy and liaise with outside agencies as necessary,
representing the Academy or Ark as appropriate

Key responsibilities









To oversee and monitor the academic culture, learning and progress of students in
the Sixth Form
To communicate the highest expectations of Sixth Form culture & ethos and
consistently and effectively implement the Academy’s policy and procedures around
this
To lead a team of tutors, developing and enhancing their practice, and to ensure that
the highest level of pastoral care is provided to every student
To contribute to planning the tutorial programme for the Sixth Form, support tutors
in resourcing the programme, and monitor its delivery
To establish and communicate the highest expectations of attendance and
punctuality for all students
To monitor the attendance of Sixth Form students and to respond promptly to any
attendance and punctuality issues to ensure that the Academy’s targets are
met/exceeded
To develop effective relationships with the parents/carers of the students in a year
group and to communicate regularly with them
To lead assemblies for students in the Sixth Form
To liaise with outside agencies to set up interventions to support individuals and
groups of students, as and when required





To support students in the acquisition and development of Sixth Form learning
dispositions and positive character traits
To liaise with the Office Manager regarding care plans, medical and dietary needs of
students
To provide strategic leadership on the UCAS process, supporting tutors, subjects
teachers and students with writing high quality UCAS statements.
To provide strategic leadership of the procedures and systems permitting
independent study of students.
To provide strategic leadership for Student Leadership and Praise and Recognition
within the Sixth Form.
Monitoring and Evaluation






To monitor the effectiveness of UCAS application process
To monitor the effectiveness of the independent study process
To regularly and forensically review the attainment and progress of all students,
groups and subgroups within the year group and plan, implement and oversee
support and interventions
To produce reports as required on student attainment, progress and behaviour
To liaise with all appropriate personnel regarding support for student progress,
including SENCO, HODs and parents/carers
To ensure that all Academy policies are implemented consistently by tutors.
Strategic Leadership



To lead colleagues in formulating aims, objectives and strategic plans for the team
which support and complement those of the Academy
To produce an annual Team Improvement Plan and monitor and evaluate its delivery
and impact
To plan the deployment and development of staff expertise to achieve Team
Improvement Plan objectives.
Staff Development





To support the development and training of Sixth Form tutors, ensuring that their
CPD needs are met
To ensure effective induction of new tutors in line with Academy procedures
To promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective relations
To support and challenge team members, including in circumstances when they are
underperforming
To organise effective team meetings with relevant agendas centred on teaching and
learning and raising attainment.

Experience

Experience at Middle Leadership
Experience of having delivered consistently outstanding lessons to students of all
ages and achievement levels, including KS5
Thorough knowledge of post-16 developments
Experience of the supporting students through the UCAS process (desirable)
Experience of successfully delivering the EPQ an advantage (desirable)
Experience of supporting students progression to higher education
Experience of having directly impacted on the raising of attainment levels in a subject
area or phase
Experience of having significantly contributed to the success of a school through its
leadership, ethos and teaching and learning
