FABR IANO United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization City of Crafts and Folk Art Designed UNESCO Creative Cities in 2013 Fabriano 2014: 750 years of Western Paper carrying knowledge, spreading culture, connecting people Lightweight and delicate, paper is yet as unstoppable and hallowed as the transmission of knowledge itself. Paper has been mankind’s conveyor of ideas and sentiments for centuries. Paper has been the medium of extraordinary projects, works of art, musical pieces, scientific treatises, poems and literature: fragments of humanity that otherwise would have lost in space and time. “Olim cartam undique fudit” is inscribed in the Fabriano coat of arms. It is what Fabriano does and is, founder of this extraordinary means of communication, disseminating it worldwide. The citizens of Fabriano are proud of this heritage and we all hope it is reflected in the efforts we’ve put in the organization of this Congress. A heartfelt “Thank you” to everyone who worked to make this event possible. Giancarlo Sagramola Mayor of Fabriano Dear IAPMA Members! It is a great privilege to be here, with all of you, to celebrate 750 years after the birth of the very first western paper, thanks to the “art & genius” of Fabriano paper masters. Lots of peoples in the world know Fabriano as the city of paper, but few of them know where it is located… on the map. Fabriano, therefore, is not only a brand of very good paper as someone might think, but a delightful city, rich in history and culture, in between the Umbria and Marche regions. “It’s fragile but more valuable than marble… and makes men immortal, despite themselves.” GREETINGS 4 These words are taken from the sonnet “ in praise of paper “ that I have chosen to welcome the Members of IAPMA Congress 2014. They are by Francesco Stelluti, Fabriano scientist, famous for having co-founded in 1602 the ‘Accademia dei Lincei’ the oldest scientific academy in the world and highest Italian cultural institution that has had among his associates men of the stature of Galileo Galilei. The quotation effectively states the contribution of Fabriano paper: delicate, white but, at the same time, able to carry on the memory of the world making people immortal, in spite of themselves. The fact is that without ink and good paper, words vanish in the air and must be retrieved from memory and transmitted by word of mouth, with all the limitations that this system entails. Thanks to ingenious innovations by Fabriano papermakers, paper became the place in which thoughts could land and take shape, leaving the imprint of the soul of mankind’s knowledge, existence and art. From Leonardo to Raphael, from Durer to Salvador Dali’: it is really difficult to think that there has been an artist in art history, who has not had the opportunity to partner his creativity with a sheet of Fabriano paper, maybe just to draft a project. And you all are here to share it with your creativity, in this place that, as of last year, is a member of the Creative City Network of UNESCO. Welcome home, dear Paper Friends! Giorgio Pellegrini Convener Giorgio Pellegrini and I discussed the possibility of a 2014 IAPMA Congress in Fabriano in the springtime of 2011 – more than 3 years ago! It was an exciting process, visualizing a meeting of the only international organization of hand papermakers and paper artists in the western city most closely attached to paper. When the proposal was accepted we discussed the potential content of the congress, tailoring it to take best advantage of the remarkable assets of the city. Working most often across the ocean from each other – I live near Washington, DC – we also were fortunate to be able to work in person when I came to Fabriano each summer to lead the Paper/Print/Book Intensive studio program, and when Giorgio came to Washington for an important exhibition of Fabriano papers and some roundtable discussions at the Italian Embassy and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. A Congress is a vast undertaking, and this one could not have developed so well without the heads of our subcommittees, the IAPMA leadership, and the generous volunteers and tour leaders from among our own IAPMA membership. I must cite Sue Gosin, Roberto Mannino, Luciano Pandiani, Gail Stiffe, Helene Tschacher for their major contributions to the successful Congress. Our workshop and demonstration leaders and our presenters have prepared much for your benefit. A complete list of our committee is in your registration packet, and you can identify our volunteers by their badges. The city of Fabriano is tremendously behind this Congress, and you will see that in so many ways. Thank you all for your support, and our particular thanks are extended to our committee President, Fabriano Mayor Giancarlo Sagramola. Every IAPMA meeting assumes a distinctive personality of its own, welcoming different combinations of our diverse membership from all over the world. Each city where we meet has assets and strengths that attract us all to converge there for several days of information exchange, education, and inspiration for our research and our studio practice. We know that the city of Fabriano has extensive history to offer, a great concentration of both industrial and hand papermaking expertise, skill, tradition, and innovation. We will gain a lot from this several-day immersion. The secret aspect of this congress is ready now to unfold through your own engagement and perception, as you each can discover how much fun it is to be in Fabriano. I wish you days and evenings filled with secrets unlocked; pleasures of paper, food, drink, and collegiality; an awareness of how much the city appreciates you in a very personal sense, for all the most positive and joyful reasons.
