The Shriek JANUARY 2016 2016 Greetings from the Potentate We are once again beginning a new year at Syrian Shrine. I believe we have a Divan and Trustees that can transition the Syrian temple towards a very positive future. Our Divan and Trustees step up , they have vision , along with an individual foresight that will enhance all the different directions that this temple will be challenged by and will have to satisfy. The focus has to be Hospital Awareness and Involvement. With the addition of a Shriners Hospital Event Coordinator to act as a liaison between the hospital and fraternity we will ensure that both our new members and our existing membership stays involved with all the activities that we do for the hospital . Shriners Hospital for Children is why we are here and we do what we do for the World’s Greatest Philanthropy. We have three strong committees to support the divan and trustees management efforts. The Membership Committee is looking for a turnaround and a breakthrough in new candidate creations, retention through dues collection, and restorations by fostering good relations with the masonic lodges leading to recruitment. The Fundraising Committee is once again accepting every challenge with a balance of fundraising activities which are very necessary; along with the fun and free things we do to support the growth of the family and legacy efforts of the Syrian Shrine Nobility. The Circus Committee is creating a resurgence of the mom and dad’s efforts. I believe we will have a great Circus 2016 at the BB&T formally the Bank of Kentucky arena located at the Northern Kentucky University. I further believe we will help many more kids get to a great circus performance that probably would not have had the chance to do so. With increases in membership we anticipate growth in the units and clubs, as well as more new units and clubs to be formed. Unit directors and club presidents I am sure will play a huge role in this growth and their efforts will be seen in the parade routes in 2016. Word of mouth is the best advertising one can have. Please talk up the Family Fun we have at the Syrian Shrine with our picnics, dances and grill outs. There is just no substitute for good communication amongst the Syrian Divan, Trustees, and our Nobility. The past years have been successful, The Syrian temple is poised for growth in 2016. I will be both proud and humbled to lead the Syrian Shrine in such a challenging as well as such as a rewarding year as 2016. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 39 years, Joan. He was a member of Yeatman Lodge, Knights Templar and Scottish Rite. As a Noble of Syrian Shrine he served as Potentate in 1996 after many years in the Motor Patrol. SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS Antique Caravan Flying Fez At the beginning of every New Year, it is considered tradition to make resolutions to better our lives for the future. We make plans to lose weight, exercise more, attend church more regular, and other promises, many of which are not kept. But what about our Caravan Unit? Have YOU resolved to make our Unit better? Whatever it is, members make it happen. The service, the leadership, the fellowship – it all requires individual efforts by our members, we did an outstanding job with membership in 2015, increasing our membership by 70%. Now it’s time to improve our visibility at Syrian Shrine and in the community, creating awareness through parades, social media and temple involvement……all great tools if they are used, however they are no substitute for your voice. Prepare for action. Every member has a role, so get ready to grow. Gary We need to extend our heartiest congratulations to all our newly elected officers, especially our Illustrious Potentate Art Weingartner and His Lady Kathy. We also need to remember our Unit Officers, Club Presidents and all those with a new responsibility who will do an excellent job for us when we stand behind them and support them. Now that our Holidays are behind us I pray that you will remember the memorable time with friends and family despite the cold wet weather that surrounded us in 2015. Our Holidays for the three major faiths in our country are very close to each other even in politics. Take a look around the world and what is taking place, especially in the Middle East which is done in the name of God but still politically inspired. They are so close to each other yet so far apart. Yet in my youth I remember a different relationship between the three faiths. We celebrated all three Holidays together. Allah on Ramadan on the ninth month of the Moslem calendars for thirty days. Jehovah on Hanukah on our twelve month for eight days also known as the Festival of Lights. The last celebration of the year is Jesus on Christmas for a few days not counting the months of shopping that is celebrated by me. With all the celebration I have talked about it brings a special story to mind that takes me back to over five thousand years ago, when Moses told the children of Israel, “pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land.” Nearly 75 years ago (Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said “Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, and mortgaged the Promised Land! I was so depressed the other day and started thinking about our Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc. I decided to call a Suicide Hotline. I had to press 2 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told him I was suicidal.. They got so excited and asked if I could drive a truck.....Folks we are screwed. Essalamu Aleikum Samuel Mattar Clowns Joeys and Nobles all, Holiday season is upon us, and almost over. Merry Christmas, yes I said Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy New year, Happy Bengal Super Bowl Victory and Buckeye National Championship! Ok, so maybe I am getting a little ahead of myself on the last 2. What a Great time to be a Syrian Shrine Clown! We have several new members in the Shrine and several new members in the unit. Welcome Greg Wehrum ,Axe, Matt Sumpter ,Capers, Chuck Jeffers ,Hot Rod, Kent Reiger ,Knucklehead. We have not had this many new Clowns since Barrels’ and Chillie’s First year. We have several events coming up. The Children’s Christmas Skit show, it is a great opportunity for you to come out and perform in front of a friendly audience. Did I mention the Circus is coming? The Circus is coming! Our Skit committee is diligently working on two classic award winning acts. They should be block busters! Sell tickets, sell tickets, sell tickets! Lastly I would like to share with you how I learned to mind my own business. I was walking past the mental hospital one day. I heard one of the patients jumping up and down yelling 13 -13 -13. I looked through the peep hole in the fence to find out what the commotion was. I was immediately poked in the eye. I then heard him jumping up and down yelling 14-14-14.If you see a child with no smile, give them yours, Andy Chillie Mellman Ishtar Temple No. 54, Daughters of the Nile Happy New Year to all! The Hospital Hosts Unit wishes everyone a very Happy and successful New Year. This working Syrian Shrine Unit continues its good volunteer work at our Shriners Hospital for Children. Any Noble able to offer a day or two, or more each month, to a very worthy Shriner’s cause, consider joining us. We meet each second and fourth Tuesday, 9:30 A.M., in the auditorium at the hospital. Meetings last approximately one hour. Parking in the garage, adjacent to the hospital. Come and check us out, you’ll be glad you did. We would like to welcome our newest member, Marty Meyer. Our annual Christmas party for members and guests, was again, a success. Many thanks to the Hospital for the use of the auditorium as well as Dexter Denney, Chairman, and committee who did an excellent job and a good time was had by all. Fortunately, our sick list seems to be disappearing, and thankfully, those Hosts who are on the mend, are progressing nicely. Then there’s the one about the elderly Noble who was asked, “Even after all these years you still call your wife- Darling, Honey, and Luv.” “What’s the secret?” The elderly Noble said, “I forgot her name and I’m scared to ask her.” Then the report about the local police call. Two officers were responding to a domestic disturbance with shots fired. After discovering the wife shot her husband for walking across her freshly mopped floor, they called their sergeant. “Hello Sarge.” “Yes.” “It looks like we have a homicide here.” “What happened?” asked the Sergeant. A woman shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” The sergeant asked, “Have you placed her under arrest?” “No sir….The floor is still wet.” My friends, live life…laugh often…love much and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS Legion of Honor Roadsters Marvin Kuhn, PP, Commander, Chuck Cowan, Director, Dick Shipp, Adjutant Meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except July & August) at 7:00 PM at Syrian Shrine Headquarters. The Legionettes also meet on the same night, same time, same place. Refreshments together follow both meetings. The Legion of Honor has been quite active in parades all summer. Sunday, November 8, 2015 we participated in the Veterans Day Parade in Cheviot. This was the last parade of the season. The trailer is put away for the winter and the Legion of Honor is resting until the parade season starts again in the Spring. We still meet on the 3 rd Tuesday throughout the winter months. If you are a Veteran and a member of Syrian Shrine, we invite you to join the Legion of Honor. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Robert L. Duerler, PC, Scribe 2015 has come and gone too fast, ending with a lot of activities at the Shrine that the Roadsters participated in. From the Halloween Scavenger Hunt (in which the Roadsters lost only by 1 point) to the Christmas Party— we had a great time. There are many things to do during the year at the Shrine - so come out and get involved, you’ll have a good time. Now it’s time to go over your cars and get them running before parade season, which is only a few months away. We have a few cars available if anyone to looking to have a good time with a family oriented unit. We wish Potentate Art, the Divan, and Trustees a successful year - and we know there will be lots of activities for all of us to get involved in, so watch your Shriek for details. Our December belated birthday wishes go out to Mark Levi on the 17th; and our January Birthday wishes are for Cindy Smith on the 2nd and Norman Bell on the 15th. Masonic Golf Club West Side Shrine Club We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May 2016 bring health and prosperity to all of us. There is not much golf news to write about with winter upon us. Now we resort to watching the golf channel tournaments in warm climate areas. We can look forward to April 7th when club play starts. We will be playing at Lindale Golf Club again this year. Last year we averaged between 16 and 20 golfer per week. Hopefully all our members will be playing again this year. We would like to start 2016 by thanking all the men and women serving in the United States military in all areas of the world. Without their duty and sacrifice we would not be living in a free country. With the terror threats to our country we also want to thank the first responders , fire, police and EMS for keeping us safe at home and being prepared to deal with domestic terrorism . Dan Kuhn Another year has passed us with flying colors at our Temple and with the West Side Club. Rumors were circulating across the Syrian domain telling All that the West Side are shutting their doors and will no longer be around. How quickly we jump to a false rumor. We are still alive and well meeting on the second Tuesday of the month for 10 months with July blacked out and August our steak fry picnic. The meetings take place at the Nathanael Greene Lodge 6394 Wesselman Rd. in Green Township. The doors open at 4:00 PM and our meeting starts at 6:00 PM preparing for our $10.00 Dinner with camels milk, wine, soft drinks, water or even coffee which has been excellent in the past few months, prepared and served by R&R catering of Cheviot followed by the left, right, center game led by our one and only game expert known as Abe. The most you can lose is $3.00 but the winner can have all your money. It is a great time. Our last meeting 2015 was our Christmas party with live music by “The Blue Mist” band triggering some brave o to get up and dance to that great music. Of course Santa showed up to pass all those gifts that were waiting for our faith full members. Our January meeting will be on the Tuesday the 12 TH for our New Year parties of 2016. I cannot emphasize the great fellowship we share on those days when we get together. The enjoinment of all liquids and the camels milk we enjoy devouring brings a story to life. It took place at Cheers one night, Cliff said to his buddy, Norm: “Well, you see Norm, it’s like this. A herd of Buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest member! In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. Naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.” YOUR SCRIBE Samuel Mattar Northern Kentucky Shrine Club NKSC held officer elections for the upcoming year. The officers elected were; President- Ralph Steele, Vice President- Bruce Pendleton/ Membership Chairman, Secretary- Al Tucker, Treasurer- Rob Smith/ Assistant Rabban. If these names and offices seem familiar, well they are. We elected all of the officers for a second term. The Nobles present felt that they had performed their duties so admirably, they deserved another term. Congratulations to all! The Club would like to congratulate Brian Cunningham on becoming a full pledged Shriner. He was initiated into Syrian Shrine at our November ceremonial. We officially welcome Noble Cunningham and Lady Melanie. Our December meeting and Christmas party was held on the 16 th. Our shotgun raffle has been postponed until a later date. More on this will be forthcoming. Ticket prices will not change; $10 each or 3 for $25. Be saving your money so you can buy a lot of tickets. The Northern Kentucky Shrine Club meets the fourth Thursday of each month (with the exception of November and December each year) at PeeWee’s in Crescent Springs. The business meeting begins at 7:00 PM. Bring your family, have dinner and enjoy the fellowship. Doc Hakes Escort The Annual Escort Unit Ride to Rockingham, NC This event raises a lot of money for the Shriners and they have great sponsors for the Shriners Hospitals. MEMBERSHIP THE STATE OF SYRIAN MEMBERSHIP FROM THE POTENTATE. IF A NOBLE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED FOR LESS THAN TWO YEARS HE CAN BE RESTORED FOR $200.00 THIS INCLUDES THE CURRENT YEAR 2016 DUES AS WELL. WE ALL KNOW THAT WE ARE LOSING MEMBERS AT AN ALARMING RATE. IN 2016 SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE STATE OF MEMBERSHIP. RECRUITMENT IS A MUST. THE 2016 DIVAN AND TRUSTEES HAVE ALREADY LABORED TO COME UP WITH THE ABOVE FEE SCHEDULES. NOT MUCH MORE CAN BE DONE TO AID RECRUITMENT OTHER THAN GET BACK TO LODGE AND BRING THEM IN. THERE ARE CANDIDATES IN PRACTICALLY EVERY LODGE GOING THROUGH. GET TO KNOW THEM AND SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT OUR HOSPITAL AND FRATERNITY. WE ALL MUST BEAR THE BURDEN OF RECRUITMENT TO GET THROUGH THIS AND MORE. WE ARE DOING MORE THINGS AT SYRIAN IN THE WAY OF FREE EVENTS THAN EVER BEFORE. WE HAVE ASSIGNED A NEW POSITION TO BRUCE PENDLETON ’SHRINERS HOSPITAL SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR”. BRUCE WILL BE ACTING AS LIASON BETWEEN THE FRATERNITY AND THE HOSPITAL. BRUCE WILL BE LEADING THE FRATERNITY BY RAISING OUR HOSPITAL AWARENESS EFFORTS AND PARTICIPATION. THIS IS THE REAL REASON WE BELONG TO THE SYRIAN SHRINE. WHICH IS TO BE INVOLVED AND SUPPORT “SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN “ BRUCE WILL NEED HELP AS WE MOVE FORWARD PLEASE CALL BRUCE PENDLETON 859-445-6829 CONCERNING THIS. THERE ARE TWO MORE HUGE FACTORS TO MAKING THIS ALL HAPPEN THAT IS NEEDED. WE NEED PARTICIPATION AT THE BUSINESS MEETINGS. THE BUSINESS MEETINGS IS WHERE ALL THE POLICIES AND ISSUES ARE BROUGHT OUT AND INFORMATION IS PASSED ON. THE TEMPLE BUSINESS MEETING IS THE MECCA OF CAMARADERIE THAT FLAVORS THE SYRIAN SHRINE WITH GOOD FOOD , BEVERAGE , A TIME TO TALK , LAUGH ABOUT OLD TIMES , AND GET DOWN TO THE BUSINESS OF HOSPITAL AND FRATERNITY . THE OTHER IS TO STAY IN THE HABIT OF READING THE SHRIEK. THE SHRIEK IS THE ONGOING SOURCE OF INFORMATION ACTIVE MEMBERS READ IT, LEAVE IT OUT FOR REFERENCE AS WE GO FROM MONTH TO MONTH. THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT THAT GOES INTO PUBLISHING THE SHRIEK IS AMAZING AND IT KEEPS ON IMPROVING. THANK YOU, FROM THE POTENTATE ART WEINGARTNER 2016 513-703-9959 MEMBERSHIP UP COMING / FUND EVENT RAISING MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Happy New Year, from the Membership Committee. Thanks for your patience in receiving the dues notices, hope Membership can count on you sending in the dues in a timely matter as always. Any questions please call me. 859-445-6829. Also you will be received a dues card from international soon, if you have already paid your 2016 dues. Dues are needed to continue running the needs of OUR Temple. Please send that check or credit payment in to Sue or Debbie at Syrian office, at 513-751-3800. The Membership Committee is STILL reaching out to all Units/Clubs (one member) to sign up to be a Shrine Ambassador. New Shriners will be assigned to each unit to be mentored for their first year as a noble. Please contact Bruce Pendleton (859-445-6829) to be a listed mentor, supporting your club or unit. Great things happen when units and clubs recruit, active membership rises. The best way to enjoy your membership in the Shriners fraternity is to participate, and a great way to participate is to join a club or unit. Shrine clubs essentially serve as “mini-temples.” Each of Shriners International’s 195 temples is in a specific city, and many times that temple’s jurisdiction is vast. Clubs are created in the temple’s outlying areas to keep nobles active and involved in Shriners activities – kind of like satellite groups, with all members belonging to the same temple. Units are made up of groups of nobles with similar interests. Service units benefit the nobility or the temple and may include policing, maintenance, first-aid or hospitality. Performing units primarily provide entertainment for Shriners or the general public. Examples include clown groups, marching bands and mini-car drivers. Units usually participate in community parades, and many compete against similar units from other temples. Membership History….During the early part of the 20th century membership in Shriners International grew at a steady pace. By 1946, membership had jumped to 150,000 Nobles and another 250,000 had joined by 1958. In fact, Shriners International experienced one of its largest periods of growth in the years following World War II as returning soldiers looked for new ways to continue the camaraderie they had experienced with their fellow soldiers. The Shrine Circus has been raising money and entertaining families for generations. As the number of temples and nobles grew, so too did the hospitals. By 1958 the hospitals’ endowment was valued at $125 million and growing. The nobles were proving themselves to be excellent fundraisers. The Shrine Circus, founded in 1906 for fun and entertainment, began to play a role as a significant fundraiser in support of the hospitals. Today, there are nearly 200 temples across North America, South America, Europe and Southeast Asia. In addition to the Shrine Circus, temples hold events throughout the year ranging from fish fries to concerts, car shows to fishing tournaments. It is fun with a purpose – supporting the important mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children®. UP HOSPITAL COMING NEWS EVENT Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center Lexington Topping Out Ceremony On Tuesday, December 1, the final steel beam was placed on the new Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center. The practice of “topping out” a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious practice of placing a tree on the top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their ancestors that had been displaced. The practice migrated to England with Scandinavian invaders and took root there. Today, a nonreligious but formal ceremony is often held to commemorate this milestone in the construction of a building. The 30-foot long, 1,200 pound steel beam had been on display at the current Shriners Hospitals for Children on Richmond Road, where patients, families, staff and Shriners had signed it with messages of gratitude and good luck.
