Program Summary:
Be concise and detailed in summarizing the content, structure, and legal focus of your program. Please attach additional sheets if necessary.
The program centered upon the importance of the Magna Carta to legal principals in the United States. The
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
program
began with a short "Jaywalking" styled question and answer with a number of law
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
students concerning what they knew (or didn't know) about the Magna Carta. The presentations
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
began with a short summary of the historical origins of the Magna Carta in Great Britain.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Subsequent presenters focused upon those portions of the original Magna Carta that later
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
served as the cornerstone of basic American jurisprudence: no taxation with representation,

religious
freedom, separation of powers and civil liberties.

Comments:
Clarify the procedure, suggest additional ways of performing the same demonstration, or comment on Inn members’ response regarding the demonstration.
The Jaywalking piece was designed to add some levity to the subject and to emphasize just
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
how little most practicing lawyers, let alone law students know about the Magna Carta and its
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
continued relevance. One member of the group was assigned the role of an agitator/
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
questioner who was responsible for generating discussion among the broader Inn.

program was lively discussion during the presentation
and one member of the presenting team acted as a provocateur to raise questions for
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
discussion.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Creative and Innovative: How did the program present legal issues in a unique way? The program was innovative in the
interviewing the man on the street to show the general ignorance of what the Maga Carta was
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
and its importance.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Educational: How was the program interesting and challenging to all members? Because it presented the history of the
Magna Carta and the importance of the Rule of Law. It was challenging because we brought
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
it to the present day to discuss the erosion of civil liberties in American society and challenged
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
the members to be vigilant in protecting citizen's liberties.
Quality of Research: Does the program contain complete research? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
