Animal Farm On the Book Plot The animals on a farm are treated very poorly by the farmer. The pigs decide to lead a revolution and kick the farmer off the farm. The pigs lay out a series of rules for the other animals under the guise of making life easier and equal for all. As the story progresses, the pigs stop following all the rules. Life on the farm slowly returns to a select few on top and all the others living in misery. Characters Old Major - Pig a very old pig who is respected has a dream that the animals could live ‘free’ of ‘man’ (man=root of all evil) Napoleon - Pig Large Berkshire Boar; very smart Very determined and smart; good at manipulating people (not with words but with action) Makes others fall in line Pig of action; not of thought Power hungry Kills rivals Snowball - Pig Cute, little pig; very charismatic Great orator; good at convincing people to do stuff through the power of his words Good at marketing (slogans) Comes to odds with Napoleon Squealer - Pig Also very good at speaking – could convince anyone of anything Great at marketing and political savvy – Propaganda Napoleon’s right hand pig Very happy to ‘live it up’ with the in-crowd Characters: The Horses Boxer: extremely strong; idealistic/hopeful; wants revolution to succeed; believes in leaders; naïve? Mollie: frivolous; vain; not political; selfish Clover: mother figure; hard worker; starts to suspect but doesn’t know what/how to act Benjamin: oldest animal on farm; ornery; knows more than he’s saying/sees reality; doesn’t really take action to prevent problems Characters: The Dogs Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher: part of the revolution; have the puppies The puppies: raised/brainwashed by Napoleon to serve his needs Characters: others Moses: a raven; favored pet to the Jones family; believes in a place called “Sugarcandy Mountain”; leaves the farm to go after the Jones; comes back with tales of “Sugarcandy Mountain” The Sheep: easily brainwashed/controlled; good at chanting; mob mentality Characters: The Humans Mr. and Mrs. Jones: a drunk farmer and his wife Mr. Pilkington: owns a nearby farm; dislikes Mr. Frederick; mostly gets along with the pigs until the end Mr. Frederick: owns a nearby farm; worried revolution is ‘catching’ Mr. Whymper: liaison between farm and others; motivated by greed; sees/believes what he wants
