TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY FOR A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS WHITTIER WHITTIER CHRISTIAN CHRISTIAN HIGH HIGH SCHOOL’S SCHOOL’S 1:1 1:1 (BRING (BRING YOUR YOUR OWN OWN DEVICE) DEVICE) IPAD IPAD INSTRUCTIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM PROGRAM Whittier Christian High School exists to equip our students in the areas of academics, service, and leadership so that they may become the next generation of Christian thought leaders. While the goals of higher-level thinking and lifelong learning have not changed, the tools and techniques of education have changed. Students today must utilize current technology to compete both in education and career. We are excited to introduce the 1:1 (Bring Your Own Device) iPad Instructional Program to help them excel in our changing world. Through extensive research of digital devices, we have concluded that the iPad is the best and most comprehensive device for 1:1 education at WCHS. Why? + • The iPad is more reliable than other tablets and has a 9-hour battery life. + + • Apple is the market leader for educational apps and textbooks, providing creative solutions to meet the needs of teachers and students. • Teachers can provide a unified set of instructions for iPad use. + + • The Apple App Store has a stringent vetting process for apps, ensuring safety, security, and reliability.3 • Using classroom Apple TVs, students can use AirPlay to wirelessly share their work instantaneously, and teachers can project their content for all students to see and experience. + • The iPad works with both Macs and PCs, ensuring seamless integration with whatever computers students currently use. THE THE ‘BIG ‘BIG PICTURE’ PICTURE’ BENEFITS BENEFITS INCREASED STUDENT ENGAGEMENT HIGHER PERFORMANCE AT COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES BETTER CAREERS Research supports that, when done properly, access to technology benefits classroom engagement. One research study that spanned 1:1 programs in six different states showed that a computing device helped increase students’ interest in learning.5 Because 99% of our graduates attend colleges or universities, our students must posses the self-discipline and digital skills needed to succeed in hybrid and online classes. In the professional world, businesses increasingly rely upon online education for training and professional development. Most initial on-the-job experiences will require students to be able to immediately demonstrate the ability to learn through a hybrid or online model.4 HOW HOW WILL WILL THE THE 1:1 1:1 PROGRAM PROGRAM WORK? WORK? STARTING IN FALL 2014, EVERY STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO BRING AN IPAD TO CLASS. BEFORE WE GET AN IPAD Our family already has an iPad, can we use it? Yes, you may use an existing iPad if it meets the following requirements: iPad 3, 4, or Air; 32GB or more; iOS 7 only. Devices must also be covered by a family-purchased protective case. We’re a tablet family. Can we use something else? No, you may not use another device for school in place of the iPad. Why not? Standardizing with one device is the best learning model for students, and allows teachers to more efficiently address technical issues in the classroom. WHEN IT IS USED IN CLASS We’re worried about the cost of a new iPad. Our studies show that even though the initial cost of an iPad is high, the reduced cost of eBooks as a textbook alternative will result in a net reduction of cost to parents over the course of four years at WCHS. Won’t the kids be distracted online all day if they have iPads? An upgraded mobile device management system will filter online content and provide firewalls to actively manage both the wireless network and student devices. Will you still use textbooks? Yes, we’ll use both digital and traditional textbooks for the 2014-2015 academic year. It’s still too expensive. Another option is to buy a previous version of the iPad at a reduced cost from Apple.com. What if my child has other technical issues with the iPad? Every iPad comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support through Apple. AppleCare+ for iPad extends your coverage to two years and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage. We recommend purchasing AppleCare+ for your iPad.
