Valley Electric to Build EV Charging Station

Valley Electric to Build EV Charging Station
Valley Electric Association,
Inc. (VEA) will soon play an
important role in The Nevada
Electric Highway initiative,
a project aimed to promote
the use of electric vehicles, or
EVs as they are known.
The project is a joint venture between the Nevada
Governor’s Office of Energy
and NV Energy.
VEA will be supporting the
initiative and helping build
the infrastructure because
many miles of the Nevada
Electric Highway—which follows U.S. Route 95 between
Reno and Las Vegas—run
through VEA’s service territory.
The idea behind the
Electric Highway is to provide electric vehicle owners
the ability to charge their
vehicles between Reno and
Las Vegas.
As it stands right now, the
trip is nearly impossible for
EVs, with their limited range.
Stations along the Electric
Highway will include “fastcharge” technology, which is
important for long-distance
travel.
VEA will be building a
charging station in Beatty to
support the Nevada Electric
Highway initiative.
The Beatty charging station
will be owned and operated
by VEA.
As a strong supporter of
renewable energy initiatives,
VEA will be working closely
with the Nevada Governor’s
Office of Energy and NV
Energy to help develop this
vital infrastructure. n

EV Facts
h Average EV gets about
3 miles per kilowatt
hour.
h At 11 cents a kilowatt
hour it would cost you
$3.66 to travel 100
miles.
h The average car gets
25 Mpg.
h At $3.53 a gallon (4
year average) it would
cost $14.12 to travel
100 miles.
h If gas were its current
$2.90 forever it would
cost $11.60 to travel
100 miles.
A search for charging stations on Google Maps shows that, while not as prevalent as
regular gas stations, the availability of EV charging stations is growing.

EVs and Distances on the Electric Highway
The goal, of course, is to make it easier for owners of
electric cars, or EVs as they are known, to get from
point A to point B. But different EVs have different
ranges. According to AutoTrader.com, these are the top
ten EVs according to range. n

Interns on Their Way
Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) intern Desiree Niles (right)
and community representative Cassandra Selbach celebrate
Niles’ last day at VEA with some ice cream cake in the VEA break
room. Niles, and her fellow intern Aaron Alcaraz spent three
months supporting VEA staff and learning first hand about how
an electric utility cooperative works. Niles is moving on to beauty school and Alcaraz is planning on becoming an engineer. We
wish them both luck and success in their sure-to-be-bright

1943 Digger Truck recently won first place
in the Fish Lake Valley Fourth of July
Parade and Car Show. The refurbished
truck was used decades ago to help place
and set poles for VEA.
It was sold and then lived a hard life,
nearly to be forgotten before VEA rescued
it and had it restored from the frame up.
Today, the truck lives a peaceful life in
VEA’s garage periodically visiting members at events like the Fish Lake Parade.

Line Crews go the Extra Mile for Members
Valley Electric Association,
Inc. (VEA) line crews regularly go beyond the call of duty
to help.
Recently, our crews have
unstuck flags from flag poles,
pulled model rockets out of
our lines, and changed out the
lights at Petrack Park.
A few weeks ago, linemen
Ryan Farnsworth and Preston
Hearn helped member
Rebecca Farmer untangle an
American flag from the flag
pole that her late husband had
erected in front of their house.
Also, Apprentice lineman
Fernando Chiadez and other
line crew recently changed the
lights in the softball field at
Petrack Park in Pahrump.
That same day, the same
crew helped pull a model
rocket from our electric lines
a few blocks north of the
park. ■

In recent years, Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has made
significant progress in promoting the development of renewable energy projects and other green initiatives in southwestern
Nevada. As a member-owned electric cooperative, we have a responsibility to pursue
innovative programs and endeavors that have a direct and lasting impact on the communities we serve.
VEA and its member-owners are responsible for one of our nation’s largest and
most successful domestic solar water heating programs, providing our communities with improved access to energy-saving technology. Since launching the program
in 2009, VEA has installed 878 solar water heaters in southwestern Nevada, offering
on-bill financing with zero-percent interest and no down payments. Our cooperative has received prestigious local and national recognition for this program, including a National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Community Service Award for
Energy Efficiency and a Las Vegas Business Press Green Award.
Continuing VEA’s tradition of innovation, our cooperative is set to introduce
a number of other unique green initiatives. VEA has partnered with the Nevada
Governor’s Office of Energy and NV Energy to support the Nevada Electric Highway
initiative, which will include the installation of electric vehicle charging stations in
communities along U.S. Route 95 between Las Vegas and Reno. As part of this effort,
VEA will install an electric vehicle charging station in Beatty. We are currently
reviewing potential locations for the station and our cooperative is proud to support
this effort to promote the use of electric vehicles in Nevada, and we expect the Beatty
charging station to bring new visitors and tourism dollars to our service area.
VEA is also working to introduce a large-scale community solar project in
Pahrump that will provide our members with unique opportunities to experience the
benefits of renewable energy generation. The output of this project will be directly
available for individual members at a savings over their current rates. While this project is in the planning stages, we expect to announce additional details in the coming
months.
Looking toward the future, VEA will continue to develop and introduce green initiatives for the benefit of our member-owners. Our service area offers an abundance
of renewable energy resources, and we will work together to ensure these assets are
properly utilized to create valuable new opportunities for the communities we call
home.
Until next month,
Thomas H. Husted, Chief Executive Officer
