tragic period of Latvia in the beginning
of the 20th century when the nation’s
energy created it’s heroes and martyrs –
the Latvian riflemen. “During the WWI the
riflemen heroically fight against German
army, later guarded the Communist leader,
Lenin in Moscow. Though in the past
100 years there have been contradicting
opinions about the riflemen, they had
participated in countless battles, and that
way personalized Latvian soldier’s heroism.

SYNOPSIS: For 5 months well known latvian
hiphop artist Ansis and italian performer
Alberto conducted a workshop for youth
in an underaged prison in order to make a
musical theatre performance. The process
itself allowed the boys to open their most
hidden scars and realities that otherwise
would have been kept deep underground.
Whilst the music is measured in decibels,
one of the characters describes the
experience in prison as being the ultimate
level after cocaine and morphine.

director Dzintra Geka graduated from The
State Theatre, Music and Film Institute in
St.Petersburg as director of motion picture
and TV production, 1979. From 1970 until
1980 was assistant director of the National
Film Board of Latvia. From 1980 until 1992,
she was director of the Telefilma Studio.
Since 1992, she has worked for various
production companies. In 1996, she was
the director of the Power and Chronicles
conference. Since 1982 has directed more
than 40 documentaries.
ABOUT THE COMPANY: Studio SB was
established in 2001 in Riga. Focus on
documenting the memories of people
who were deported from Latvia on
June 14, 1941, as children. The studio
produces documentaries and seeks out
and interviews deportees. The studio

Zvaigzne. They have produced many of the

SYNOPSIS: Under the loving but firm
guidance of an old fan turned director and
cultural diplomat and to the surprise of a
whole world, the ex-Yugoslavian cult band
Laibach becomes the first foreign rock

of North Korea. Confronting strict ideology
and cultural differences, the band struggles

of learning, metamorphosis. This film
provokes to review one’s own existence and
being in this world through the prism of
the Zeitgeist and personality of the Latvian
poet Knuts Skujenieks. The film reveals the
eternal struggle of a strong personality’s
coming to terms with the society and
system in which an individual is seen only
as the minimum value. Knuts is not a macro
revolutionary aiming to change the system,
but is rather a micro rebel in his own inner

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Film director and
cinematographer Ivars Seleckis is the oldest
documentary filmmaker in Latvia who is
still actively working. His filmography is
like a bridge connecting the modern day
with the legendary past of the Latvian
documentary tradition, and Seleckis is one
of most prolific creators of that tradition.
His documentaries are noted for their
thorough and sophisticated analysis of
the social processes. His film Crossroad
Street received an EFA award for best
documentary.

established in 2000 and has since become

in Latvia. The variety of Mistrus Media
productions have strong reflection on
historical themes, including docu-fiction

certainly an artist = a vandal = a provoker =
anarchist Petr Pavlensky (31), although the

superpower of the state once again is trying
to set a course to totalitarian regime with

SYNOPSIS: In 1978, Ieva Lesinska had just
spent a heady month in New York visiting
her father, Imants Lesinskis, a Soviet
translator working at the United Nations.
He was an employee of the KGB and a
member of the Communist Party. During
her trip Ieva’s father informed her that he
and his wife Rasma were about to defect.
He offered her a blunt choice: take a taxi to
the Soviet Embassy and denounce him as a
traitor, or stay with him and never see her
mother or her homeland again. She chose
to stay.

called last pagans of Europe - the Baltic tribes.
The North and the East were the last regions
of Europe where people practiced a religion
that’s based on the worshiping of nature. The
story is told through the eyes of the main
protagonist - a merchant from Gotland - as
he experiences the events during Northern
crusade of the Eastern Baltic Sea area in
the 13th century. The arrival of Christianity
brought along remarkable geopolitical and
socioeconomic changes. Who were they and
what can we learn from them?
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Raitis Ābele has
studied at New York Film Academy, obtained
BA degree of Humanitarian Sciences in
Psychology and currently studies for MA
degree in Psychology. Lauris Ābele has
obtained MA degree in Audio-Visual Arts
(film directing) at Latvian Academy of Culture
and BA degree in Humanitarian Sciences
(philosophy). As for their artistic vision, both
brothers are focusing on existential problems
and talking about them using strong visual
elements.

hundreds of Vietnamese immigrants were
trying to cross European Union’s eastern
border illegally. They are no longer a
surprise for our border guards, larger and
smaller groups are crossing border every
week. Some people who live in villages
near the border assist them in order to
earn money. The film takes place in Latvian
border villages and follows the Vietnamese
Trail.

graduated in film directing from Latvian
Academy of Culture in 2001. His films
display a genuine interest in the innermost
hidden feelings and sensibilities of his
protagonists, and a skill in capturing them
on film. His films Tide and Documentarian
won the best feature length documentary

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Kaspar Jancis freelance artist, director, composer, set
designer. He has created several drawn
short anmations, in 2010 his animated film
Crocodile won Cartoon d’Or. Recently he
finished another short animation Piano
that has already been awarded with several
prices. Morten is his first stop-motion film
and also his first full-lenght feature.

SYNOPSIS: When Dad takes his seven-yearold son Jacob from a spacious flat in the
city centre to the city’s suburbs to spend
his summer there, the imagination-rich boy
discovers a previously unknown world. He
meets his uncle, the former seaman Eagle,
and his cousin, the self-confident know-it-all
Mimmi, and he makes friends with Boss the leader of talking dogs. Will kids manage
to become a united team and together with
the dogs save the neighborhood from the
rich tycoon Manny Pie who wants to turn
the romantic district into an impersonal
area of glass skyscrapers and shopping
centers?

Jansons (1972) is animation film director,
animator and graphic designer. He is
founder of animation studio Atom Art.
His award winning short films Choir Tour,
International Father’s Day and Isle Of Seals
have been screened in numerous festivals
all over the world, amongst them, Annecy,
Ottawa, Hiroshima, Zagreb, a.o. Edmunds
Jansons is also recognized children’s book
illustrator.
ABOUT THE COMPANY: Atom Art is an
independent animation studio based in
Riga, Latvia. During the last years Atom
Art has premiered more than ten award
winning short films that travel festivals

production of Christmas tv special Pigtail
