The Feast of Mary Mazzarello - A Salesian Inspiration
Tomorrow, 13th May, we celebrate the feast of St Mary Mazzarello. At fifteen she joined
the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in 1852. As the Industrial Revolution changed the
landscape of Europe, Mary opened a dressmaking shop for young women. There she taught
not only the skills for survival in the everyday world but also the power of prayer and the
love of God. Her practical and spiritual approach to ministry caught the eye of Don Bosco.
In 1872 he asked her to establish the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
Her inspired ministry for the education of young women complemented Don Bosco's
commitment to young men. By the time of her death in 1881, Mary had established a style
of education grounded in enlightened catechesis. Pope Pius XII canonised her in 1951.
Today's Daughters of Mary Help of Christians mirror their founder's joyful self-giving, her
sincere humility, her responsibility in work, and her austerity in life.
From the Principal
Mother’s Day Mass: Today we celebrated Mother’s Day with
a beautiful mass in the College Chapel. This is now an annual
tradition where we offer a mass and morning tea and I am pleased
to say it is growing every year. We had a full chapel of mothers,
grandmothers, students and even some dads. Fr Pete brought
to mind the role of Mary as Jesus’ mother and reflected on the
important loving role all mothers have. I thank Mrs Loader, Miss
Bautista, Fr Pete, Mr Donnelly, and Mrs Babic for their various
roles in the preparation of the liturgy and the morning tea. I trust that all our mothers and grandmothers have a great day on Sunday.
NAPLAN Tests: All students in Years 7 and 9 successfully completed the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests yesterday. I must
congratulate all students for the mature way they approached the tests. Additionally, I thank Mrs Westwood who organised the running
of the tests along with Mr Grant Kennedy, Mrs Batty, Mr Mackintosh, Mrs Justine Morris, and the staff who worked with the students.
Many thanks to our Learning Support Staff who also were involved in the NAPLAN process. The results of the tests will provide important
information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs.
Year 12 Retreat: The annual retreat to Stanwell Tops this week was a resounding success. I was
lucky to attend for the entire time. I was very impressed with the good work and good humour
that was being displayed by all. It was also great to see the staff enter into the all the activities
with enthusiasm. The three days away were essential for our senior students to spend time
together in order to reflect on their life and their challenging future. I have constantly reminded
them about the importance of self-reflection, especially as they look to make significant changes
in their lives at the end of the year. Our hope is that this special time will serve as a focus for their
graduation and also provide an opportunity to solidify true lifelong friendships. Thanks to Mrs
Loader (REC), Miss Bautista, Fr Pete, Mr Hunt (Year 12 Coordinator) and all the staff who gave up
their time to journey with our senior students.
Years 11 and 12 Parent / Teacher Interviews: A reminder that these interviews take place in the College Hall next Thursday 18th May.
Information has already been forwarded to families concerning the booking procedures. These opportunities are very important as they
enable staff to discuss specific aspects of a student’s learning with their parents. Equally, staff gain insights into aspects of students’ lives
that may impact on their learning.
Parent Advisory Committee: A reminder to members of the committee team we will be meeting at 6:30pm in the College Library on
Monday 15th May.

Year 12 Retreat: Year 12 retreat was a great success this week. The students
entered into the spirit of the occasion and hopefully had the opportunity to
reflect on their relationships and where they were heading in life. Their sense of
community and connection to Bosco was very evident. They are starting to realise
that their time together is quickly drawing to a close and how important the
remaining months will be. Thank you to Mrs Loader, Mr Hunt and Miss Bautista for
organising the retreat. Thanks also to Fr Pete and all the staff who gave up their
time to be with Year 12.
Mother's Day Mass: Thanks to those families who were able to support the
Mother’s day mass this morning. I would like to wish all our mothers, grandmothers
and carers a wonderful day on Sunday and I hope you get well looked after.
Senior Parent/Teacher Evening: Senior Parent/Teacher evening is next Thursday
18th May. School will be finishing early on this day to allow interviews to start at
2:40 pm. Buses will be as normal and there will be teacher supervision in the yard.
Years 9 & 10 Exams: Exam week for Years 9 and 10 begins on Monday 29th May.
Permission notes allowing students to leave school when they don’t have an exam
will be sent by the Year Coordinators. These need to be returned or else students
will have to remain at school. If parents prefer that their child remain to study at
school that is also fine.
Skateboards: A number of students are still riding skateboards to school. This is not
to happen. Our College insurance does not cover students riding skateboards and I
have had complaints from members of the public regarding students being reckless
in their use of their boards.
Signing out: Once students have arrived at school they are not allowed to leave
the property unless they follow the sign out procedures. In the past this has been
an issue with senior students but of late there have also been junior students who
have been leaving the grounds of a morning. I ask that parents discuss this matter
with their sons and daughters please.

Literacy & Numercy
- Mrs Peta Batty
There has been a tendency in everyday speech for
adverbs to be replaced by the adjectival form. The
following sentences are incorrect:
I was real impressed.
It rained so heavy the roof leaked.
These sentences should be:
I was really impressed.
Sports News
Dane Coombs (Year 9) has been selected in the
NSWCCC u/15 AFL team. Dane will now go to Albury
in June to trial for the NSW All School team.
This is a fantastic achievement for Dane and we wish
him all the best at the next trial.
Talia Field (Year 7) was selected in
the NSW All Schools Swimming team and will compete
at the NSW all Schools Swimming Championships at
Homebush in May. NSW All Schools selection is the
highest honour a NSW school student can achieve, so this
is a very significant achievement and one that the College
community is extremely proud of!
Feast Day Cross Country: Winning the inaugural Feast Day Cross
Country Award is very prestigious. Nicholas Beattie & Tara Stanton
were our overall winners with Nicholas coming within seconds of the
record.

It rained so heavily the roof leaked.
The following sentences are accepted colloquialisms
but should not be used in formal writing:
He doesn’t play fair.
I’ve got it bad.

SOMETHING TO PONDER
She worked extremely hard. Hard is an adverb
qualifying the verb worked (How did she work? Hard)
Extremely is also an adverb qualifying the adverb
hard (How hard did she work? Extremely hard).
Despite the fact that hard looks like an adjective, it is
an adverb because it qualifies the verb. If this were
put into an adverbial form it would be she worked
hardly, which sounds odd, or she hardly worked,
which means something completely different.
Year 7 English - Mrs Maria Millward
At the end of Term 1 the Year 7 Newman
students examined poetry and stories
from the past, discovering how the English
language has changed over time. Inspired
by the Old English poem ‘Beowulf’, and
an examination of ancient runes that
were part of the English language at that
time, some students composed short
descriptions poems using a runic alphabet.
Here is a sample from Daniel Coppock.
