Assignment-Photo Essay
The Great Depression
Grade 5
You are to create a photo essay of the Great Depression. The viewer
should get a feel for this historic event after viewing your poster.
Poster to include
 A creative title and your name written neatly in large font on the front
 A 3-4 sentence summary of the causes and effects of the Great
Depression
 4 photographs of scenes from Bud that depict the Great Depression.
These pictures should have a picture citation, a direct quote from the
story below it with the page citation (page number).
 4 photographs that depict other hardships of the time from your photo
research. Each of these photos needs a source citation (title and
author) and a 1 or 2 sentence caption telling about the hardship that
people faced.
The summary should be based on the article from link below discussed in
class.

key terms of the Depression: stock market crash of 1929, weak banking system, over
production of goods, overspending, too much buying on credit, bank runs on bank
failures, unemployment, people lost homes, homelessness, riding the rails, without
food, medical care, medical care, drought and dust storms.
Your photos may either be photocopies or digital images taken from the
books provided. A collection of images from the books may be found on the
“assignments” drive under Dilzer/Peralta. Scenes from the novel might
include jazz clubs, show kids hungry, bread lines, a Hooverville, men with
clubs, or hitching rides on trains. You are to find pictures that you believe
match these mental images.

of when Bud and Bugs tried to hitch a train ride.“Bugs was
