Run Description Medicine Senior House Officer 1 COLLECTIVE EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT The following run description is in accordance with the conditions set out in the current Resident Doctors’ Association & District Health Boards Multi Employer Collective Agreement. 3 PLACE OF WORK Whangarei Hospital. 4 CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES and WORK SCHEDULES Responsible to: Clinical Director of Acute Care Clinical Head of Department Other Consultants Clinical responsibilities to include: • Attending acute and elective admissions under the team during normal working hours • Attending inpatients and ward rounds with consultants • Seeing new and follow up appointments in outpatient clinics • Attending elective patients where required • Assist in acute cases when required. • Liaise with other staff within the department of Medicine • Liaise with other specialities including the Emergency department, general practitioners • Communicate with patients and their families about the patient’s problem and treatment where appropriate. • Keep appropriate clinical progress notes • Follow up investigations • undertaking practical procedures within your competencies • Instigate treatments as directed by the consultant. During ordinary hours the SHO will work with the on call Medical team. The SHO will attend post acute ward rounds as required, clinics, elective assessments and acute admissions when appropriate as determined by their team consultants. The SHO will be responsible for acute admissions. Outside the ordinary working hours, the SHO will be responsible for attending all medical, geriatric admissions as appropriate and admitting new patients to these services and attending all cardiac arrest calls. The SHO will complete a 6 month rotation as a SHO and must be registered as a basic trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. The registrar should then work as a Medical Registrar for a further 6 months. 5 PATIENT CARE and SERVICE DELIVERY RESPONSIBILITIES As determined by the Clinical Head of Department Medicine / Medicine consultants, having regard to the service needs and the requirement of the specialty. 6 PROVISION FOR TRAINING / EDUCATION Adequate provision to be made to meet requirements for trainees of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as well as ongoing education and development of skills. Provisions: • An adequate degree of supervision. • Attendance and participation in: Radiology Meeting Registrar Teaching Medical Meeting Journal Club Grand Round 1230 1330-1430 0815-0900 1200-1240 1240-1330 Monday Wednesday Wednesday Friday Friday Please note that the Senior House Officer is required to attend Registrar teaching sessions 7 ASSESSMENT and PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL Ongoing training assessment and performance appraisal of the Senior House Officer as required by the College will be made by specialist staff that will provide a written report to the Senior House Officer at the end of each six monthly period. This report shall be confidential to the trainee, Supervisor of Training and the Clinical Head of department of Medicine and will be available for inspection by other parties only with the written approval of the Senior House Officer. The supervising consultant will conduct a six monthly review of performance of the Senior House Officer on behalf of NDHB. 8 RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TRAINING and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OTHER STAFF. Senior House Officer will participate in education of other staff as determined by the Clinical Head of Department Medicine teaching of House Officers teaching nursing staff teaching of Medical Students This may consist of teaching during the management of cases in the ward environment and outpatient clinics as well as by giving the occasional tutorial or lecture. 9 RESEARCH and REVIEW ACTIVITIES • Review – Senior House Officer will participate in clinical audit and quality assurance activities, including attendance at fortnightly Continuing Medical Education sessions. 10 OTHER REGISTRAR AND SPECIALIST COVER SHOs will be required to cover absence of other HOs for Annual/conference/exam/course leave and limited sick leave. SHOs will also be required to cover absence of other senior and junior staff in certain circumstances. 11 HOURS OF WORK Rostered Duties The SHO will be available for acute and arranged admissions during ordinary hours whenever rostered. The SHO will be required to work short take shifts between 0800-1800 when rostered with team. The SHO will be required to work Long take shifts between 0800-2330 when rostered with team. The SHO will be required to work 1 weekend in 5, Saturdays 0800-2130 and Sunday between 0800-1500 when rostered with team. The SHO will be required to work the following over a 5 week roster: 15 x 0800 hrs-1630 hrs 5 x 0800 hrs -1800 hrs 5 x 0800 hrs -2330 hrs 1 x 0800 hrs-2130 hrs 1x 0800 hrs – 1500 hrs 2.5 Hours over time per week has been included. Any hours not covered by those outlined above will be paid at the rates as specified in clause 11.0 of the RDA MECA 12 LEAVE Provisions for all leave as outlined in clauses 18.0 – 24.0 of the Collective.
