Responsible Mica Sourcing Summit
Position Paper
July 2015
The Natural Resources Stewardship Circle (NRSC), in concert with
its members and external partners, is working to identify ways to
manage risks in the mica supply chain and to improve the livelihoods
of mining communities in the northeastern states of India through
collaborative actions that involve stakeholders across the value
chain.
NRSC and its member companies are proactively engaged in India’s mica mining communities
through investing in a range of community-based and supply chain management practices
designed to uphold human rights, ensure a safe working environment, and improve mica
traceability.
NRSC has partnered with BSR to facilitate a Responsible Mica Sourcing Summit (date to be
established), to engage a wide circle of stakeholders in a solutions-oriented dialogue to better
understand how business can help support economic and social development and improved
community livelihoods in the mica mining regions of India. The Summit aims to surface
collaborative actions to take forward that will help companies to better manage industry risks
around mica sourcing while helping to protect the human rights of all people in the mining of mica
in India.
NRSC seeks to convene not only its own members in the beauty industry, but also relevant
actors from other industries that are users of Indian mica – such as electronics, automotive,
paint, and oil and gas. In addition to engaging brands, the group seeks to design a convening
that is inclusive of all links in the value chain and relevant civil society and government actors:
including brands, suppliers, industry associations, NGOs, multilaterals, local and regional
government, and local community leaders. Attendance will be by invitation only by the NRSC,
and companies and organizations are invited to contact the NRSC or BSR if they are interested
in participating.
The objectives of the Responsible Mica Sourcing Summit are to:
•
Convene actors across industries, sectors, and levels of the value chain in order to raise
awareness of mica supply chain risks, along with their root causes and possible
intervention points;
•
Share the intervention strategies that are working to date, and ideas for further scaling;
•
Collectively brainstorm a portfolio of solutions to better manage risk in the mica supply
chain;
•
Identify collaborative actions and clear next steps to accelerate and scale good practice;
•
Demonstrate that commitment to the improvement of the mica supply chain can lead to
positive benefits for companies and communities.

ABOUT NRSC
Members of the NRSC (Natural Resources Stewardship Circle) have pledged their personal commitment
to creating a positive impact on the sourcing of natural ingredients, a first for the beauty industry.
Reaching beyond competition, this commitment unites key stakeholders from every horizon, giving a
voice to local farmers and producers. The NRSC proactively puts into practice the recommendations of
international organizations and standards, such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity,
the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Global Compact, the International Labor
Organization, and, more recently, the Nagoya Protocol. The women and the men of the NRSC are
committed to sharing and more broadly implementing the best practices developed during international
events on biodiversity and sustainable sourcing. Visit www.nrsc.fr for more information about NRSC.
