February 2017
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ADMINISTRATORS
Dear Cape Families:
February is the month when we celebrate and remember those who daily pour into our lives
or who have made a positive contribution to the people we’ve become. We receive hugs,
smiles and hear proud words about recent achievements from our students daily. The joys
they share with us are the highlights of our days! Please join us in commending our teachers
here at Cape for their dedication to enriching and meeting our students’ academic and
social needs. Our support staff members, including our paraprofessionals, office staff,
cafeteria teams, and custodial crew, give willingly to make sure our students, families and
teachers are supported in their educational journey. You, as parents, are our partners,
constantly offering your support wherever needed. We are all members of the Cape family,
and it is this family that makes our days immeasurably richer.
Cape Elementary will have two special Grandparents’ Days in February. February 15 for K, 1
and 2 and February 16 for Grades 3, 4 and 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We will have a small
breakfast for our grandparents, and then they will have time to visit their grandchildren’s
classrooms. Our PTO Book Fair will also be open for families to visit during this time.
Thanks to all the parents who attended our Student Led Conferences. It was a great to see
students sharing about their goals and learning at SLCs! Thanks also to the parents who filled
out our mid-year surveys! We appreciate your feedback and will continue to improve in all
that we do.
Safety continues to be a focus at Cape Elementary. We appreciate all the parents who walk
their tardy students into the front office in the morning. We also thank parents who keep their
phone numbers, addresses and email addresses up-to-date. Remember all communication
including emergency communication will be through ParentLink.
Hope to see you at our Movie Night on Friday, February 3! Proud to be your administrators!
We are in this together!
Sincerely,
Ms. Osterholm and Mrs. Sund

National School Counseling Week 2017, "School Counseling:
Helping Students Realize Their Potential," will be
celebrated from Feb. 6-10, 2017. Thank you for supporting
me as I work with students here at Cape Elementary to
help instill academic, emotional, and social wellness in our
future generations. It is an honor to be your school
counselor.
The district-wide character word for February is
Honesty. This involves being truthful and trustworthy.
The district’s quote for the month is, “Tell the truth.”
Since Valentine’s Day takes center stage in February, let’s
take a look at combining our character word for the month
and the most popular theme in February, love. Love is an
action that needs to be practiced and demonstrated daily.
Children need to hear the message that love can be
communicated through acts of kindness, through
respecting individuals for the content of their character,
through putting someone else’s needs first, and through
choosing words that build people up versus tearing them
down.
Speaking the truth in love not only shows compassion for
other but also builds character. I may have the most
honest thing to say to a person, but if it isn’t spoken in
love, chances are the person will not receive it well. Is it
possible to be honest and truthful and to be kind and
loving? Absolutely! Is it necessary to lie to a person in
order to be considered honest and truthful? Absolutely
not! Being thoughtful means that I may choose NOT to
comment on someone’s outfit. If the person WEARING
the outfit asks me what I think, I can be honest and still
make sure the person feels loved and cared for.
Teaching our children to speak the truth in love and to be
thoughtful and kind is teaching our children how to be
better adults. Communicating in love allows the message
sender and the message receiver to navigate just about
any topic. Please join with us in February in promoting
honesty and love and in building these character traits in
our future leaders here at Cape Elementary School.
