Made in Australia
Long Term storage of ResQ Evacuation Items.
Normally when a product is made, the finished item is sold and used by the customer. After some time
the product will start to deteriorate through use and washing so it becomes obvious when it needs
replacing. This could be within days, weeks, months or many years, depending on what the product
is. However the Pelican Emergency Evacuation ResQ products may never be used for many years.
The ResQmat, ResQme and ResQpod Evacuation Sheets are not used or washed, but purely kept in
storage until there is an emergency evacuation. These items are bought for an emergency one day in
the future. They may not be used for years and hopefully never used at all. The products are made out
of webbing, nylon, sewing thread, plastic buckles and plastic sheeting, etc., and all of the components
are man-made products that were invented in the 20th century. The question that nobody knows, is how
long the raw materials will last in our evacuation equipment.
The suppliers of our raw materials verbally say the materials should last forever, but no one will say
how long ‘forever’ is. It is possible that the equipment may not be used for many years but no one has
experimented with the different raw materials to say what would happen to them in storage.
How long is
?
If the products are stored away from UV rays, at a normal inside room temperature and humidity,
they may last forever, but if the storage place is subject to extremes of temperature this may damage
the material. Some multi-storey buildings may store the ResQ products on the landings that have an
external staircase with glass walls on two sides. This can result in extremes of temperature in summer
and winter if there is little air movement in the staircase. The inside temperature of a car on a hot day
can be around 122° F or over 50°C.
However it is still important to inspect the products to make sure they have not been damaged or eaten by small animals.

Schedule
We suggest that any item is given an annual inspection to ensure the product is safe
to use. This time frame may be altered by your facility’s officers depending on where
the items are stored.
