Our expanding project produced nearly 1,500 kilos of potatoes fruit and vegetables last year in 2014. Once again this year at Potato Saturdays in the Town Hall all through February and March 2015 we make potatoes available for home growing from our bulk purchases of over 200 kilos of seed in 23 organic varieties and nearly 100 kilos more in 30 non-organic varieties -you’ll find brief descriptions on the following pages.. PENTLAND JAVELIN non-organic first early R E D D U K E OF Y O R K Heritage first early found in a Dutch crop of Duke of York (Eeresteling) in 1942. Wonderful strong flavour, great all rounder to roast, mash, baked wedge or chip. Deep red skin & pale yellow floury flesh Plant is vigorous, spectacular foliage and the red skinned tubers are large. Attractive pale yellow floury flesh makes delicious creamy mash, the colourful red skins can remain when cooked. Roast in usual way but keep skins on! Floury flesh makes perfect baker for butter. Ideal for baking, salads and boiling. Resists drought, most virus and blight. ROCKET non-organic first early R O C K E T when released in 1987 was quickest bulking early potato. Rocket's ability to grow large crops of uniformed round tubers made it very popular. One of the better exhibition potatoes of its time, Rocket has white fleshed and skinned tubers with shallow eyes and a mild taste. Lifting your Rocket before full maturity is recommended to prevent tuber cracking. RUSSET BURBANK non-organic maincrop S E T A N T A Organic Maincrop ULSTER SCEPTRE non-organic first early RUSSET BURBANK Small maincrop russet-brown skinned white fleshed potato with few eyes, first developed in Lunenburg, Massachusetts in the 1870s. Sometimes known as “Idaho”, it has good distinctive flavour, hold its shape well, and is high in antioxidants (that’s rare in a starchy plant). Common and popular in America where it is encouraged to grow large, its flesh is white, dry, and mealy, and it is good for baking, mashing, and Macdonalds french fries. S E T A N T A ULSTER SCEPTRE SALAD BLUE non-organic second early SHARPE’S EXPRESS .S A L A D B LUE An unusual product of the last years of Victorian breeding. Vigorous, can be harvested like a second early and crop small or be more like a maincrop if left to grow. Attractive blue-purple flowers. The spectacular blue floury flesh of this unusual coloured potato is well suited to baking, roasting, mash, boiling or chips. And salads too! . A red skinned cream fleshed organic maincrop. Floury with very good eating quality and high yielding, it’s ideal for organic and allotment growing. Big growers like that it’s resistant to blight and blackleg, and that it keeps very well in storage. Very versatile, eating quality is excellent –good for baking, boiling, roasting, chipping and mash. SHARPE’S EXPRESS organic first early Long oval tubers of bright creamy white flesh and white skin make this mealy potato good for boiling. A good old flavour and an early crop make this a firm favourite, sought out and enjoyed by Lost Garden customers.. Sharpe’s are a perfect new season variety. There’s a wonderful flavour, an attractive pear shape and the floury flesh is great for soaking up sauces and gravy. This is a garden classic first introduced by Charles Sharpe of Sleaford and later made famous by Percy Thrower. Mealy with high dry matter, cooks well, boiling requires care. SARPO MIRA Organic Maincrop SHETLAND BLACK non-organic second early .S A R P O SHETLAND BLACK MIRA Oval red skinned Hungarian variety with pale fairly floury flesh. Good for storing, a cook’s favourite, and ideal for baking and roasting. Renowned for resistance to late blight and reputed even for blight recovery, and as less attractive to slugs. High yields and long storage capacity makes this a grower's choice. resists blackleg, late foliage blight, late tuber blight, potato virus Added to the national collection in 1923 but probably much older. Not as high yields as commercial varieties. Shetland Blacks have netted very dark blue skin, shallow eyes, flesh is yellowy with a blue vascular ring. Tasty and floury they are real crofter fuel. Saute, bake, roast or steam. Shetland Black fry really well and the strong blue patterns with different slicing directions can be used creatively used in sautéed potatoes, crisps, etc. Often known as “Ormskirks” or “Cheshires” because of their popularity and prevalence among growers in those areas. They are oval to long in shape with white flesh and white skin. A good firm combination of floury and waxy, these are super flavoured ptatoes which stay intact through boiling. Ulster Sceptre has many kitchen uses including boiling and roasting, good sliced while hot and dressed for a cold salad later. A good exhibition potato in its day, Ulster Sceptre has high resistance to foliage blight, common & powdery scab. VALOR non-organic maincrop . > V A L O R < Potatoes show great blight resistance to produce large crops of bold white tubers. Bred by Jack Dunnett who made his name at Pentlandfield near Penicuik, Valor’s flesh is creamy white and not too floury. This tall plant grows in all conditions, with tolerance of heat and drought. Impressive high yields of medium to very big tubers plus good all round cooking quality, superb flavour for mashing, boiling, roasting. Stores well over winter. W I L J A non-organic Second Early W I L J A One of the first Dutch-bred varieties to change the rule book about second earlies. Wilja can produce large consistent crops of light yellow skinned tubers in a shorter time. The flesh of Wilja potatoes is yellow, firm, between waxy and floury. It is good for boiling, mashing, baking, chipping and roasting. Allotment growers report Wilja stands up to slugs and blight better than other varieties “Wiljas have not been affected at all, smooth perfect tubers with a great taste.”.
