The Nurse-Family Partnership, more specifically Ginny, helped my family and me through a very difficult time. The literature, discussions and the manual helped me prepare for my son and the abrupt change in my life. I will never forget how caring and helpful Ginny was to me and my family. It was great to have an outsider looking in, and to help us through all of the issues and questions we had. However, like most teen mothers I have dealt with my fair share of judgments, from mothers at birthday parties, to people at the park. I never once felt judged by the NFP, and I feel that their belief in me along with the strong family foundation, allowed me to stay strong through graduating high school with a son and moving on to college. I‟ve had the support from my close friends and family that have allowed me to ignore the negatives and stay strong. 2 Veteran Plaza Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania 18360 Since the NFP, I have graduated Suma Cum Ludi at East Stroudsburg University, and got my first job as a Special Education teacher – which I love! My son is turning 7 years old this year, and his father and I are looking in to buying our first home together. The NFP gave me a better understanding of all the basics of becoming a first time mother. It was great to have someone that I felt that I could confide in, and ask those “silly” questions that a lot of first time mothers have. In addition, the NFP also gave me the confidence to know that no mother is perfect, and gave me the tools and literature to help me along the way. In short, Thank you for your time and efforts into helping me become a successful mother. With Love, Daria Foley A Division of Informational Websites Save the Date! Dealing with Challenging Behavior papromiseforchildren.com “Finding positive ways to address your child‟s challenging behaviors creates better harmony in your family (and gives your nerves a little rest) but is also helping your child learn vital social skills that will help her in school and in life. The familiar Native American proverb says, „Don‟t criticize someone until you‟ve walked a mile in his (or her) shoes.‟ When a child is misbehaving, either in major or minor ways, it‟s easy either to take it personally or imagine that the child deliberately wants to be annoying or disruptive. Instead, if we follow the proverb, we try to understand why he or she is behaving in a certain way. If we put ourselves in the child‟s shoes and see things from his or her point of view, we are better able to help the child change the difficult behavior.” www.heretohelp.pa.gov U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission - Check for safety tips and recalls on products. www.Cpsc.gov Monroe County Transit Authority - www.gomcta.com Donate or Needed items - www.Freecycle.org Consumer Action Information www.Consumer-action.org Shepherd’s Maternity House - They provide shelter, care, counseling, and education for pregnant women ages 18 and older. www.cssdioceseofscranton.org Pocono Info - Find information about services that can help in Monroe County, PA. 570-517-3954 Mon.- Fri. 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. www.poconoinfo.org Text4baby - A free mobile health information service that provides pregnant women and new mothers with information to help them care for their health and give their babies the best possible start in life. www.text4baby.org/ Vaccinate Your Baby - New tool for parents available! One of these resources is Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance. Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA) protects children by teaching citizens to recognize and report child abuse and neglect by provided information, educational materials, and programs that promote positive parenting. Their programs adhere to some core beliefs about families and how they can best meet the needs of their children. Family Support Programs affiliated with PFSA follow some general principles in their approach to working with families. A couple of these are: The program listens to the concerns of the family and treats each family member with respect. Staff and family members work together to access resources, find solutions, and build community for the family members to grow and develop. When families call the PFSA toll-free line, they are referred to a program in their community, and are often mailed copies of PFSA‟s parenting brochures (if they choose to give a name and address). Sights & Sounds in the Community Key Learning Area: Social Studies Thinking Infant: Try to allow enough time for errands with baby that you can tune in to your babies reactions to new sights and sounds. Label the sounds of a car honking, bells ringing, birds singing in a reassuring manner for your infant to encourage their enjoyment of new experiences as their world expands. Toddler: Allowing enough time for errands with a toddler sets the tone for enjoying new sights and sounds. Expand the labels that your child gives those things that are familiar or interesting. If your child points to a car and says, “Car,” you can expand that to “Yes, that blue car is going slowly.” Pre-Kindergarten: A trip to the grocery store can provide an opportunity to observe a variety of community workers: bakers, cashiers, butchers, etc. Talk to your child about the people who help food we eat get to our tables. Ask your child which jobs he/she might enjoy. Kindergarten: Talk to your child about the process of buying food. “First we make a list, and then we find food in the store and choose our food. After that, we pay for our food and bring it home.” Empty food boxes and containers can later become props for your child‟s play at home as they set up a pretend grocery store and role play shopping for food, taking the money, and bagging items. More information and activities can be found on papromiseforchildren.com It’s not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun.
