MARCH 2013 Team will leave for Sierra Leone to conduct a Health Assessment Survey and design new hospital project Arrival of Silver Sea Cruise Ship OCTOBER 2013 Medical Team Mission Trip DECEMBER 2013 Arrival of Zeghram Cruise Ship Lynn Pelton, International Director, and Jerry Staples, GGM Operations Manager, met with the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone at the Presidential Lodge in Freetown to discuss expansion of GGM clinic operations. Her Excellency Sia Nyama Koroma agreed to assist in helping GGM relocate to a larger building with property available for further expansion. The GGM former clinic was closed and has moved to a building built by the former vice-president of Sierra Leone, Mr. Solomon Berewa. Mr. Berewa had built the small 24 bed hospital in honor of his late wife Deborah who was a trained nurse. The hospital had not opened since it was built in 2006. A 20 year Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Greatest Goal Ministries, Mr. Berewa, H.E. Sia Koroma, and the Minister of Health. Photos are available on our web site at www.ggmusa.org. The new hospital will carry the name of Mr. Berewa’s late wife as he requested — “Lady Deborah Berewa Hospital” — and is located in Lakka, very near the capital of Freetown. The clinic will provide free medical services to all children under age 5, pregnant and lactating mothers and the disabled. A nominal fee will be charged to others as we try to institute a cost recovery model at the clinic in anticipation of further expansion and a larger hospital. A Greatest Goal Ministries team will arrive in March to conduct a health assessment of the surrounding catchment area and begin plans for expansion of the new hospital. In April of this year the GGM Disability Sports Association Constitution was accepted by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Employment. It is the only recognized Disability Association in the country. Twelve teams are now active in the association including members from the polio, amputee and deaf disability groups located in Freetown, Kenema, Bo and Makeni. GGM is looking for donations of soccer jerseys, balls, shoes, socks and shin guards. Information for donating can be found on our web site. Keeping sports teams close to where the disabled live allows for them to enjoy camaraderie, competition and a sense of belonging without having to travel great distances. Education Sponsorship Update This Fall we have continued the sponsorship of twenty Sierra Leonean students ranging in age from 5 to 18. We have taken extra measures to increase attendance and make all students accountable for their commitment to education. These students are all equipped with their back to school supplies, new bookbags and the fees are paid so that their 2012-2013 school year is a success! Thank you to all of our donors who make school a priority for our very special children in and around Freetown!
