More information in the next issue of trueColors. ColorMaster 2.0 release brings process-neutral RGB image workflows GMG ColorMaster 2.0 supplies predefined settings and optimized profiles for most popular target color spaces. It also offers a color space that covers all common printing gamuts. “ColorMaster helps to provide a color-accurate latebinding RGB-workflow, meaning that images are not converted from their RGB space until as late as possible. It is ideal for those who create data from a wide variety of media and printing processes, or who process printing data for production in different countries and have to consider different print and online standards,” comments Michael Farkas, GMG director of marketing “It is a solution to a problem people have been talking about for twenty years. It offers the right way to work with RGB files in an effective and productive manner.” ColorMaster concept born from IKEA/GMG relationship GMG Director of Marketing, Michael Farkas, worked at IKEA before he joined GMG. There he developed the ColorMaster concept with GMG. “At IKEA, I was responsible for the process quality of over 200 million catalogues annually. It was imperative to match color exactly, no matter where the images were printed or what substrate was used. Unfortunately, ICC technology offered limited capabilities and a static rendering engine,” explains Farkas. “The ColorMaster concept was conceived and created between GMG and IKEA to individually adjust separation profiles to a common appearance. It offers the opportunity to avoid multiple correction rounds for mixed media production. At IKEA, we not only reduced our repro effort significantly but also offered our print service providers ready-to-print images that allowed faster makereadies and consistent output, worldwide.” GMG Director of Marketing, Michael Farkas Marc Welch, GMG Americas (middle) receives the FTA Technical Innovation Award from Joe Tuccitto, FTA Education Director (left), , and Shelley Rubin, FTA Educational Services Manager. OpenColor: OpenColor FTA award increasing its profile. At a gala awards banquet that took place in San Diego, California on April 28-30, GMG OpenColor recently received the prestigious Flexographic Technical Association Technical Innovation Award in the category of Prepress-Graphics. What about this revolutionary new software is creating waves in the flexo industry? Read more... The Technical Innovation Award recognizes companies and/or individuals whose visions and perseverance bring new products and technologies to the flexographic marketplace. For more than 15 years, FTA has been rewarding those creative thinkers and risk-takers who seek ways to further refine and advance the flexographic printing process and who bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. GMG OpenColor is a proofing technology that precisely predicts the color appearance of printed inks, particularly ‘overprints’ – inks printed on top of each other. Previously unattainable, a proof can now accurately simulate a printed result. A continuing trend in package printing is the increasing complexity of jobs and the use of multi-color printing while reducing time to market. Many jobs require different combinations of inks, substrates, screening, and other variables. One of the most difficult challenges facing a converter is accurately and reliably communicating color between all parties of the supply chain, from the brand manager to the printer. To understand colors by mixing them, every combination would require a specific test chart with the different combinations. It is costly to go to press with color fingerprint charts, making plates, and spending time testing rather than earning money on a job. GMG OpenColor resolves this complex packaging problem and provides better results, with less information. With OpenColor, users do not have to print combinations of overprints. They can print the single color patches – e.g. color control strips – and combine the color and substrate properties in the software. Measurements are centrally saved and categorized according to print variables. This lets operators build an archive of measurements and combine existing measurements to new profiles, whenever a new combination of inks must be profiled. “Our entire team is honored to receive such important recognition. With GMG OpenColor we wanted to take a big step to help customers increase production efficiencies, and improve color accuracy and predictability in the supply chain. We are working with many prepress houses and converters worldwide, to help them implement GMG OpenColor. They understand that OpenColor can reduce time to market, save the cost of creating too many press fingerprints, and reduce lengthy makereadies. Most important, it improves the color communication and approval process between all supply chain partners, and verifies color expectations. They appreciate that.” Victor Asseiceiro, Director, Business Unit Packaging, GMG OpenColor case studies don’t get more convincing than this: CSW Inc., New York What CSW are all about CSW, Inc. provides integrated packaging services for consumer product companies (CPCs). This includes brand support, brand visualization, creative services, image engineering, flexographic printing plates, steel rule cutting dies, and workflow coordination. Our award-winning prepress team has been a recognized leader in color management since 1994. We ensure a common ‘look’ across our customers’ marketing efforts, assuring buying confidence. On spot colors in packaging When you consider the process of overprinting spots, which creates an unknown mix color, we would say that color reproduction in packaging is still pretty challenging. Many times we are also working with custommixed inks, beyond what Pantone or other ink suppliers offer. The ability to predict the behavior of overprints and the interaction of these inks is critical to managing color. Until about a year ago, we were still looking for a better way to represent spot color interactions with an inkjet proofing device. We wanted a better method of predicting multi-spot color overprints prior to seeing the result on press. GMG OpenColor tested What sold us on OpenColor was the first demo we had with GMG. We presented them with one of our most challenging separations to proof. Within minutes, OpenColor provided a proof with the same color fidelity as one that we had spent hours tweaking. Their live demo was done faster – and more accurately – than anything we had done in the past. It convinced us to work with OpenColor. When GMG said we would only need a couple months to implement this for full scale production use, we laughed. However, the implementation of OpenColor was incredibly easy. Despite the newness of the technology, we were able to run, debug, profile, reprofile and produce successful commercial jobs very quickly. Instant success We like OpenColor’s speed and accuracy. It is robust, based on spectral data, and really stunning when it comes to ease of use. OpenColor can use partial targets to confirm previous profiles and build upon them to create new profiles on the fly. Many profile creators need data from lots of targets, but it can be difficult to read them all within one package development cycle. If we are working with a job that needs to be completed quickly, OpenColor will allow us to read just some of the data, and will still deliver accurate color. When the client signs on the dotted line of the proof, we can deliver it to the press with the confidence that it will be reproduced accurately and repeatably. What CSW like about OpenColor It would be fair to say that OpenColor has cut our color management and proofing time in half. Printers are not incurring the expense of makeready and press time for running 800 feet/minute for test charts. We are also seeing cost savings in the reduction of the consumables needed to print – and reprint – multiple overprint iterations on our proofing devices. Nor is our proofer tied up with these iterations and keeping other jobs waiting in the queue. It is likely that OpenColor has saved us from investing in another printer. What OpenColor has done for their business Marek M. Skrzynski Director of Graphics, R&D CSW, Inc. “In my opinion, OpenColor is one of the first breakthroughs in color management in the last ten years. It is a game changer” GMG ProductionSuite Released just two years ago, GMG’s ground-breaking wide format software, ProductionSuite, is proving adaptable enough to make a difference wherever and however wide format printing takes place. trueColors speaks to GMG offices in America, France and China to find out who uses it, and why. [read more >] Type of customer: They span industries, markets and size. We have a customer focusing on mass production of canvases. We have a customer producing mainly car wraps and other decal work. Others are more into large volume of banners, billboards. Other are specialized in corrugated or retail market, with a strong emphasis on structural designs. What problems do your customers face? Efficiency problems: With a mix of creative applications and various RIP’s, often from different vendors, they often find themselves with a difficult and unreliable workflow. Color matching issues: Most of our customers wanted an easier, more reliable way of getting consistent, good colors. The process of changing the file in order to match previously printed material, or get the color approved by the end customer is tedious, time consuming, error prone and extremely difficult to reproduce when having to reprint a job a month from now. Adding new machinery: A couple of our customers started looking at GMG ProductionSuite when they were buying new equipment: printers and/or cutters. In some instances they were buying over 5 extra machines, also adding die cutting. They needed a powerful, complete system to drive all that, while keeping it simple at the same time and without hiring additional staff. What they are getting from ProductionSuite? • Standardize their prepress work. Jobs can be prepared much faster with time savings of 50% and more. It also means that the whole process is much more predictable and consistent. • Speed up the complete process from file to finished product • Reduce training needs and support to a minimum • The use of a simplified, yet complete and powerful workflow also reduced the stress inside the company, very much appreciated by all the employees. • Better image quality, predictable colors, neutral greys. Quick turnaround without compromises on quality GMG ProductionSuite has allowed our customers to speed up their complete prepress and printing process and increase their quality output. The quality output is consistent time after time, print after print. The future Our customers that implemented multiple machines at the same time, sometimes even 7 new printers, testify that they could not have done this without GMG ProductionSuite. The simplicity of the system and the standardization of color during prepress procedures make such implemetations easy. Type of customer: Our ProductionSuite users work with large format printers among a whole range of other different printers and cutter devices. How does ProductionSuite help? With our software they have the possibility to drive all of them. For example our customer MignoGraphie is pleased to be able to use the same solution to drive his FB 7600 and all his other printers. Handling only one interface to drive all their printers and cutting device is a blessing for them. It helps them a lot if they compare with the time when they used different softwares from different suppliers and had to wait for responses…not to mention the knowledge required for all these tools, so now they are saving training time and do not depend on the only colleague that is specialized on a product. They can also share their knowledge and experience between them. They don’t feel as dependent as they were before from the editors. They also loved the fact that the Editor tool was also included and allowed them to do some last-minute changes. Color management issues What’s more: they had been looking for a solution to their color management issues and they had quite a lot! Now they know they can get the exact same result whatever the printer and its format and it is repeatable with always the same accuracy. Another very interesting feedback we had after testing ProductionSuite came from a user that had been working for a long time with a competitor. They had grown used to spending hours of manual adjustment once the profile was generated to get a result that would be close to their expectations. They tried ProductionSuite and were impressed when getting this very result right after the profile had been created and without manual intervention! Ink saving tool Additionally, our users unanimously see the benefits from our integrated EcoSave tool. Ink consumption is drastically reduced and so are the costs. Yet, the quality of the result is higher. It is also one aspect that helps us with the dealers who always want to compare with the big competitor that has been ruling over the French market: EcoSave is part of the solution, not an extra module. It’s a sales argument that the decision maker can easily understand, whether he is technical or not. Flexibility They also praise the flexibility and adaptability of our product that really allows them to implement the software on any computer. The operators like having the software running where they need it instead of running from one place to the other. And again, they have, right on their desk, access to the color management tool, the editor and the printer and cutter drivers all at once. Type of customer: There is a growing large format sector – especially in Hong Kong. They range from specialist singage companies to general graphics suppliers. What kind of problems do your customers have? Usually in the production line with color matching of the clients proof – they often need to generate the proof more then 5 times in order to match the customer proof with the specific printer. And because the printout color is way different from what the prepress guy saw on the monitor, they sometimes need to guess the color! Once they get the proof back from the client they have to wait for that specific printer to become available. As we see the LFP market growing in Hong Kong, production schedules are getting very tight. Due to the booking for advertisements and new product launchs in the region, time is always limited. Other advantages: • With the second printout they are able to match the customer proof. • Now they are doing monitor calibration with the same ISO target, and GMG SmartProfiler is doing the recalibration with all the printers. • Once they get the approval back from customer, they can just place the job with any printer that is available. • Tiling with ProductionSuite Editor is much easier and efficient. • Fast generation of horizontal and vertical with overlapping. • Send a single file size to RIP, and print at the same time. They now complete the job in 2 instead of 4 hours. • FM screening helps them reduce banding. Now they just clean the printhead every 5 or 10 jobs instead of after every job. One ProductionSuite customer we have is doing more on the cosmetic product side – these sectors are really particular about color and banding. The future All these ProductionSuite features are really making their job easier, and solving all the problems they have faced for the last 10 years. With productivity speed up more then 30%, they gain more than 30% business income for the company. How is ProductionSuite helping them ? Our customers have seen the speed of their production increase by more then 30%, and they have significantly more flexible. They are glad to have GMG ProductionSuite in their platform, and they are looking forward to the introduction of CoZone, which they believe will improve their workflow. Barry Singelton, Marketing Executive GMG UK Ginger Ginger hair facts: • Approximately 1-2% of humans, or about two in 100 people in the world, have red hair. • It is the most rare hair color in humans. • People with red hair have twice the risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease. • There is a common perception that redheads could become extinct in 100 years. • Bees are thought to sting redheads more than others. The science of Ginger. Ginger hair is a mutation of the MC1R gene on chromosome 16. The mutation blocks the production of eumelanin (dark brown and black pigment), which causes a buildup of the phaeomelanin (red and blond pigments). The Devil and Ginger Baker. Ginger Baker was the legendary drummer of Creme and Blend Faith. Notirious for his outrage behave and heroin additiction, he was (and still is) wildly regarded as the best drummer that ever lived. He once moved with his fortune to Nigeria to track down new African drumming beats and his idol, Fela Kuti, only to be forced out by the military. A new documentary about him – The Devil and Ginger Baker – is to be released soon. He now lives in the only country that would toterate his antics: South Africa. You have to love tradition. English and Scottish tradition says that at New Year, your first caller will bring you luck depending on their hair color. Brunettes bring the best luck. Blondes bring no luck. A widower brings bad luck. And a redhead brings the worst luck. This custom was so strongly practiced at one time that some homes would hire first callers. http://www.purgatory.net Can you name these famous ginger people? Answers on page 18 the back page color the backpage interview What is your favorite color? Orange – it's the color of my hair and it defines who I am as a person, part of the global ginger community. What color best describes your personality? Orange again because it's bright, arresting and attractive. What books are you reading right now? Manuscripts Found in Accra by Paulo Coelho and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Just a bit of light bedtime reading. Tell us something about you that will shock and amaze? Medically, at 2m tall, I am a giant, therefore very few people were aware that my hairline is receding. When you’re not working what do you do? I love to read and am learning to play the acoustic guitar. In the summer, I play league cricket for North Leeds. Your dream dinner guests? Keith Richards to lay down some riffs and Ian Botham (legendary English cricketer and bon viveur) because he's my hero. Who would play you in a movie about yourself? Obviously Brad Pitt, but if he wasn't available, Eddie Izzard. If you could work for GMG in another country, which would it be? The U.S of A, primarily because of the chance to see how business is done in the States, but also to check out the birthplaces of most of my favourite music genres, from rock’n’roll to disco, house and techno. What’s your favourite GMG product and why? GMG CoZone because at my height people say my head is in the clouds, so it feels natural to become a fan of a cloud dwelling software solution. ColorServer seems like magic to me. If you weren’t at GMG what would you want to be? Writing feature articles on cricket, music, culture and touring the world. And making music documentarys. What was the last movie that made you cry? The Hangover 2. A bro-mantic story always puts a lump in my throat. What do you like to do once in a blue moon? Colonic irrigation. What or who makes you green with envy? Nothing really, I tend to be impressed by successful people rather than envious. Red or white wine? Red, but not too much because it can end in tears and a furry tongue. What’s the last white lie you told? I benefitted from appealing for a caught behind on the cricket field when I knew the batter hadn't hit the ball. This may not make sense to many GMG colleagues or clients. The Stones’ Brown Sugar or Beatles Yellow Submarine? Stones.
