District Newsletter - SD of West De Pere

Winter2016
Dear Friends of the School District of West De Pere,
The 2016 - 2017 school year is off to a PHANtastic start. We continue
to be a school district of choice as our membership count increased again
this year by 86 students. The School District of West De Pere membership
has now grown from 2534 students in 2007 to 3516 this year. This kind of
growth is unlike any other district in the State of Wisconsin. I would like to
thank the administration, teachers, support staff and the entire West De
Pere community for their support, trust, confidence and loyalty. Our school
district’s growth is, in part, a result of positive conversations around the
community about our district’s curriculum, programs, co-curricular activities and employees. We look forward to modeling our “Vision of Pride and
Excellence” in the months and years to come.
John R. Zegers, Superintendent
Administratively, we continue to work with the Board of Education focusing on future enrollment
growth and the opportunities for facility planning. Bray Architects, the Board of Education and the administrative team met recently as a work group to examine options created through discussions with our
building administrators. The topics discussed included: current and future building utilization, grade configuration, financing scenarios and taxing impacts. Over the course of this school year, we will continue to
provide you with insight, progress from our discussions and feedback opportunities to insure that our
best plan is the best for our students, parents and taxpayers. People in our community speak positively
about what is happening in our schools. This positive feeling is demonstrated on a daily basis by administration, faculty, support staff, parents and community members as we prepare our children to be lifelong learners and positive citizens in the future. We need to continue to create a surplus of positive emotions around our students and district schools. The future success that our students have in the classroom, on the field, court or in a musical production is contingent upon the resources provided through
State Aid and property tax relief. It is imperative that we continue to build a strong college and career
ready curriculum to allow each individual student the emotional, intellectual, physical and social growth
opportunities to be successful.
Our challenge going forward will be to develop a long-term facility plan that balances the needs of
our students with the priorities of our taxpayers. We cannot do this alone; we need your assistance and
guidance along with the vision of our administrative team and Board of Education. Please know that over
the past eight years we’ve been continually focused on improving student learning, controlling costs and
increasing operating efficiencies in our district schools. We are committed to maximizing our resources to
provide our students and staff the very best educational opportunity possible with state-of-the-art equipment, updated technology and family focused facilities.
If you are interested in learning more about our district accomplishments, district and building goals
or want to discuss any other district concerns as we move forward together continuing to be a great
school district, I would welcome your call at 337-1393, email at [email protected] or stop in our district office at 400 Reid Street located in downtown West De Pere. In this season of giving thanks, let us
focus on the present and on what we have right now, continue to cultivate a heart of appreciation and
move toward our future goals while we enjoy the ride of our successes. We are beaming with PRIDE for
all our students and staff as we continue to raise the bar of excellence. Much of our future success will
rely on good people, strong values and in continuing our excellent reputation in our region. The future
looks bright and the optimism is high. Thank you for your financial support in the past, present and into
the future. Let’s continue to live our “Vision of Pride and Excellence.” Happy Holidays to all of you.

Student Services News
Submitted by Amy Schuh, Director of Student Services
West De Pere is very fortunate to have its first school social worker! Maureen Mommaerts has been hired
to serve in this capacity. Since this position is new to the district, we would like you to become familiar with
the role of a school social worker . School social workers support students, staff and families in ways that
ensure students are physically and mentally ready to learn. They address barriers within the child, school,
home and community that interfere with student achievement. Services provided can include assessment,
crisis intervention, home visits, counseling (individual, group and/or family), staff development and coordination of school and community resources.
A little bit about Maureen Mommaerts: I am Maureen Mommaerts, School Social Worker for the West De
Pere School District. This is my twelfth year as a school social worker and my first year with West De
Pere! I’m so excited to be a part of the West De Pere School District. I’m very impressed with the
enthusiasm and student-centered focus of the teachers and administrators here! I attended St. Norbert
College for my undergraduate degree, studying Sociology and Human Services. I attended the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee for my Master's degree in Social Work with emphasis on School Social Work and
Clinical Social Work. I hold a current license with the State of Wisconsin as a school social
worker and clinical social worker (LCSW). This is the first time the West De Pere School
District has employed a school social worker so I am very excited for the challenge to
build the program and help the students of West De Pere. My office is located at the
high school and I do travel to all of the schools in the district to provide services to
students. I am looking forward to a great school year and I wish the same for you and
your children.

Anatomage Table Alpha
Submitted by Ashley Anthon
High School Science Teacher
West De Pere is excited to announce the arrival of the Anatomage Table Alpha! West De Pere students will be some of the first
students in the country to have this cutting edge experience brought into their classroom. The Table Alpha stems from the world
renowned Anatomage Table, and offers the same revolutionary dissection experience for exploring real human and animal anatomy.
Our students will be able to receive high level education using this tool just as students at major medical schools and hospitals
including Stanford University, Case Western University, and the Mayo Clinic.
The Table Alpha features unparalleled accuracy with data from real human and animal scans. Utilizing a touch interactive screen
and sophisticated 3D visualization software, West De Pere students will virtually dissect a cadaver layer-by-layer and structure-bystructure. The Anatomage Table Alpha provides a world class experience and a real feeling dissection in our own classrooms!
The Table Alpha is a full high-resolution 3D interface that uses real animal and cadaver images that can be interacted with via
touch. With just the touch of a finger a user can rotate the virtual body and “cut” in any direction. Freehand Dissection Tools enable
users to make incisions in any direction or shape, anywhere on the cadaver and remove anatomical structures layer-by-layer. Using
this tool, teachers can simulate surgical cuts or dissection elements providing a dynamic learning environment for our students. These amazing images come at a .8mm resolution!
The Table Alpha will provide an exceptional day to day hands on and engaging learning experiences for our students and we are
excited to have it in our classrooms!

Four-Year-Old
Kindergarten Registration
The School District of West De Pere has scheduled a Four-Year-Old Kindergarten registration date for children who would be
four years of age before September 1, 2017 and are planning to attend Four-Year Old Kindergarten in the fall of
2017.
Registration will take place on Thursday, January 12 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The registration will be held at the Phantom
Knight School of Opportunity. The address is 400 Reid St. and it is located on the second floor of the building. For registration
you need to bring your child’s birth certificate, their immunization record, and proof of residency such as a utility bill or lease
agreement. This is an open-house style registration and being early has no influence on the section or session of 4K your child
will have.
If you have any questions concerning registration, please call Westwood Elementary at 337-1087 ext. 1322; Hemlock Creek
Elementary at 425-1900 ext. 3320; or Scott Marsden, 4K Director at 337-1087 ext. 1323.
Our Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program is half days, five days a week. Depending on space availability at each site, children
may be served at a location (either school or partnering child care facility) outside of their home school attendance area. If this
occurs, transportation will be provided. Four-Year-Old Kindergarten is a voluntary program and no child will be required to
attend. The Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program is developmentally appropriate and may include but is not limited to:
readiness skills, language development, social development, emotional development, physical development, and self-help skills.
If you are not enrolled in our Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program, parents with children of kindergarten age (five years old)
will be contacted via our school census report. If you are new to the area and have not completed a census form, please contact
the district office at 337-1393 ext. 8010 to have your child counted on the school census. If you know a neighbor with small
children, please share this information with them.
Pre-School
Developmental Screening
The School District of West De Pere offers developmental screening for preschool-aged children. The
school district uses census data to mail out the Ages and Stages developmental questionnaires throughout
the year, asking parents to complete the questionnaire and return it promptly by mail. As the questionnaires
are returned, school professionals score them and provide written feedback to parents on the general
developmental readiness of their child(ren). In certain circumstances, the school district will invite children to
participate in an additional on-site screening.
If you would like to request a developmental questionnaire, please call the Department of Student
Services at (920) 337-1393 ext. 8012.

Holiday Light Recycling
Submitted by Dana Lex, High School Science Teacher
Switching your lighting décor for a new look or upgrading your energy efficiency? Did rodents chew through
your extension cords?
We’ll take them! The Environmental Science classes at West De Pere High School are collecting holiday light strings
and cords so that we can recycle the copper and earn some extra cash. Last summer, 500 pounds of lights (a pile
roughly 6 feet long and 4 feet high) were converted into $100.
For what you ask? Boots! With the field work we do in Ashwaubenon Creek for The Lower Fox River Watershed
Monitoring Project, we need a lot of rubber boots both knee high and hip high for our students to wear. Additionally,
we’re trying to keep more recyclable wastes from going into the landfills, so we’re offering a more convenient drop
zone to help our community be more environmentally friendly. You can drop off lights at West De Pere High School
year round. For questions or more information about the recycling or our watershed work, contact science teacher
Dana Lex at 338-5200 ext. 4256 or send a message to [email protected].

High School Music News

The West De Pere High School Choirs have had a busy and successful start to the school year! In October, the Concert Choir and Chamber
Choir presented an annual Fall Concert that included 8th grade singers. If you missed this concert, you can watch it on our YouTube channel.
In November, four middle school singers and 11 high school singers represented West De Pere in the annual “Singing In Wisconsin” festival at
Chilton High School. These singers prepared songs and joined others from schools all around Northeastern Wisconsin for this event, which culminated with a public performance at the end of the festival day.
The West De Pere Marching Band had a successful and entertaining marching show this year, featuring songs from the musical, “Wicked”.
Aside from football games, the Marching Band held a Friends and Family Night to celebrate the hard work and time these students have
committed. As usual, our Pep Band provided school spirit through many different avenues at football games and pep rallies. Aside from school
events, our band was asked to perform for the Green Bay Gamblers special Military Night, normally reserved for the 132nd Army Band. Our
band received the call because of our stellar reputation of providing music and entertainment throughout our community with professionalism
and superb quality to fill in while the Army Band engaged in basic training.
The Annual Madrigal Dinner Performance at West De Pere High School is on Thursday, December 8. Ticket sales ended December1 in order
to give the caterer an accurate meal count. The 2017 Madrigal has not been scheduled yet, but it is traditionally the first or second week of
December. If you are interested in attending the 2017 Madrigal Dinner performance, keep in mind that tickets go on sale four weeks prior to the
performance.
Both the choirs and bands are preparing for a free, public concert on December 19 at 7:00 p.m. This concert features Jazz Bands 1 & 2,
Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and the Concert Band. Due to overwhelming community support, the performance will be held at the Walter Theatre on the St. Norbert College campus. If you can’t attend, the concert will be live streamed on our designated YouTube channel, https://goo.gl/

Thank you for your continued support of the arts and the students who dedicate so much of their time to present this music for you. Hope to
see you at the concert.

Kadin Hendricks Selected as Badger Boys State Governor
Submitted by Lisa Boyd, High School Counselor
West De Pere High School senior Kadin Hendricks, son of Mark and Andrea Hendricks (both WDPHS alumni) was elected as the
2016 Governor to the 75th Session of Badger Boys State. Kadin is the first student from West De Pere to ever hold this honor.
Badger Boys State is a youth leadership program sponsored by the Wisconsin American Legion designed to educate youth in the
duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American Citizenship. The program has been developed on the fundamental
principle that young people learn best by actively participating in the
process. As much as possible, the mechanics of government in Badger
Boys State are modeled after Wisconsin’s own government at the city,
county and state level.
Every year our De Pere American Legion Post 230 pays for one of
our students to attend Badger Boys State. Mr. Ken Van De Hei is the
commander and contacts our school each February to get our selection
committee started. They should be proud of Kadin representing our
area and our state.
Kadin is very involved in our school and community. He is
passionate about music and spends a lot of time with the school
Marching Band and Concert Band. Kadin also plays in the Pep Band,
Jazz Band, Green Bay Youth Symphony, Stevens Point Honors Band, LaCrosse Honors Band, and the Lawrence Academy Wind
Ensemble. Beyond his band involvements, Kadin is active in French Club, Student Council, Yearbook and National Honor Society. In
the community you can see Kadin assisting at music events and working with their family church. He is involved in all these activities
while taking eight Advanced Placement Classes and three College Credit Classes in his selected high school curriculum. Kadin is
ranked in the top of the class (third place) with a grade point average of 4.2083. Hats off to Kadin as he represents our community
and state throughout the year.
Talent Development Team Activities
Submitted by Joe Feldhausen, District Teaching & Learning Coordinator
The Talent Development team of West De Pere continues to be active in promoting opportunities for students with exceptional
potential. After meeting over summer to create and clarify plans, the following activities highlight the many efforts made so far this
year.
• Ashley Knapp, Chelsea Faase, Andrea Dernbach and Sue Lutz presented at the Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted
Association’s annual conference. Their session was very well attended and given outstanding reviews by attendees. The topic of their
presentation was meeting the literacy-related needs of high ability learners in the regular classroom.
• Eight students from West De Pere Middle School attended a regional writing conference at the National Railroad Museum.
Created through a partnership with five other school districts, this enrichment opportunity centers on an unsolved train sabotage
incident and gives students direction and cause in producing an original piece of writing.
• The West De Pere School District Talent Development Plan is being presented to the faculty of our schools. Approved in April of
last year by our school board, the new plan incorporates the latest research in addition to the modelling of some of the state of
Wisconsin’s most admired district plans.
• The Talent Development team has begun conversations on a collaboration with other districts and Fox Valley Technical College.
These conversations center on the creation of a regional science fair for students in grades 6-12. The hope is to have this
enrichment opportunity ready to go for the 2017-18 school year.
The webpage highlighting the newly created plan and many district efforts was launched this fall. You can find it linked to the district’s site under the Curriculum Department tab.

Brown County
Teen Leadership
Volunteerism and
West Academy
Submitted by Lisa Boyd
High School Counselor
Submitted by
Margie Hempel, West Academy Staff
Bailey Peterson & Jasmine Stromberg, West Academy Students
“The smallest act of kindness is worth the grandest intention.”
–Oscar Wilde
West De Pere is proud to announce twelve students chosen
by the Brown County Teen Leadership Steering Committee to
be members of the Brown County Teen Leadership Class of
2017. This program is part of the Partners in Education Drug
Alliance. Through this program, students have the opportunity
to develop leadership skills that will carry with them well past
their high school graduation. Leadership skills will be a focus
for this group as they take part in numerous activities during
the school year.
Volunteering is giving to others without expecting
something in return. Students and staff at West Academy
believe strongly in the spirit of volunteerism. Volunteer hours
are important for many reasons. Students with 100 volunteer
hours receive a special medallion at graduation. People who
have documented volunteer hours are more likely to get jobs
than non-volunteers.
In order to be considered as a participant, students had to
go through an application procedure. Last spring the high
school teachers nominated potential leaders from the
freshmen class. Forty students were nominated. Then, each
student had the opportunity to apply to the Teen Leadership
program. The application consisted of student questions,
recommendation letter from an adult, principal endorsement,
parent permission and an interview. Twelve of our students
were selected and once again WDPHS has the most
representatives of all Brown County high schools! West De
Pere High School is proud to have the following students as
our BCTL representatives: Abby Ambrosius, Brooke
Bemowski, Spencer Borley, Karson Corcoran, Collin Fayas,
Olivia Federman, Elena Hill. Parker Nimmer, Hanna Skubal,
Broderick Van Den Heuvel, Kaitlyn Wall and Shannon Walsh.
At West Academy we volunteer because we have kind
hearts and are happier knowing we are helping out for a good
cause. West Academy students volunteer at Salvation Army,
Heritage Hill, and the Railroad Museum. We have been
involved with Christian Outreach in the past.
At Salvation Army we pack food bags, deliver food for the
needy at Christmas, and help distribute gifts for families
through the Toys for Tots and Coats for Kids programs.
We assist with jobs at Heritage Hill State Historical Park.
Some of these activities include cleaning the grounds, working
with staff to clean buildings, and helping with events such as
Halloween activities.
Volunteerism is an important aspect of West Academy. It
helps others and makes us value ourselves.

Willy Wonka, Jr. at West De Pere Middle School
Submitted by Kristin Blanchard, Middle School Teacher
West De Pere Middle School’s 2016 musical production of Willy Wonka, Jr. opened on Thursday, November 10 and closed on
Saturday, November 12. The production began in June with the Theatre Stage Building Summer School class where construction of
the set was planned and started to come to life. During the Play Production Summer School Class, the script was previewed and the
show’s vision began to form. Students auditioned in September and worked every day after school to learn the script, choreography
and music. In addition, the fall crew continued adding to the set to make Willy Wonka’s imagination come to life. In all, approximately
170 students were involved in the process of bringing this show to the stage. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Willy Wonka, Jr.
for creating a fantastic show through your hard work and talent. A special thanks to the directors and all the Golden Ticket
volunteers and donors.
Literacy Night at
Hemlock Creek Elementary
Submitted by Laura Devine, Elementary Reading Intervention Teacher
Literacy Night was a great success this year as we unlocked the
secrets of strategic readers. Our event kicked off with a mystery
reader, Scott McCurley, a parent in our building and a Green Bay
Packer assistant linebacker coach. Parents then went to two
sessions of their own choosing to help their readers become more
strategic and develop a love of reading. Meanwhile,
kindergarteners through second graders practiced and performed
reader’s theater for their families. We ended the night with a book
raffle for all, sponsored by the Hemlock Creek PTO, to carry on our
excitement of reading into our homes. It was a great
night! Thanks to all who volunteered and attended!

St. Baldrick’s at West De Pere
Submitted by Erin Hunter, ELL Coordinator
Quietly, for more than 15 years, Brown County residents have been part of an organization known globally as The St. Baldrick’s
Foundation. The Foundation is the world’s largest, volunteer-driven organization whose sole purpose is to raise funds to support
childhood cancer research. They achieve this by assisting local, passionate citizens, organize fundraising events which focus on
Individuals soliciting financial pledges from their friends and/or families, in exchange for the individual promising to shave their head.
The participant’s shaved head is a symbol to a child battling cancer, and have lost their hair. They have an ally in their fight and
don’t have to face their illness on their own.
Here’s your opportunity to make a difference! On March 11, there will be one of these amazing events occurring at West De Pere
High School, from 12-4 p.m. The event is emceed by WBAY personality, Mr. Bill Jartz, and features a variety of activities, including
games, face painting, hair coloring, auctions, bake sales, food and beverages, and of course, the afore mentioned Head Shaving.
This event, now entering its 11th year, has already raised more than $480,000.00, and with your help, we can easily achieve our
fundraising goals this year.
To register to participate in this event visit: https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/WestDePereHighSchool
An additional event supporting this event will be held at
Westwood Elementary on March 10 while teams from Hemlock Creek
Elementary and the West De Pere Middle School will join us on Saturday. For more information send an email to:

West De Pere
Phantastic News
Home of the
Phantoms
In Case of
Inclement Weather
The school will conduct weather-related notifications via new
technology communications called School Messenger. This service
allows the district to communicate rapidly
with parents/guardians through voice, text
and email messages. Information that is
currently stored in Powerschool will be used
to send these notifications. If you need this
information changed for your child(ren),
please contact their school of attendance. The district will continue
to notify local radio and television stations for school delays, early
closing, and cancellations.
Please do not call the school unless it is an emergency. Calling
the schools hinders our efforts to communicate the news
effectively. Parents are asked to have a plan in place for their
children’s supervision and care in the event a school day is altered
due to inclement weather or other emergencies.
Board of Education Meetings
School District of West De Pere residents are cordially invited to
attend regular board meetings held once a month, 5:30 p.m., at the
District Offices, 400 Reid St., Suite W (Reid Street Crossing, second
floor), unless otherwise posted. An opportunity is provided at each
meeting for citizens to address our Board of Education. Please visit
our district webpage at:
www.wdpsd.com/board-of-education/board-meeting-minutes.cfm
or call the District Office (920)337-1393 to confirm the meeting
date and time.

YOUR OPINION
COUNTS
ATTENTION:
ALL RESIDENTS OF THE
SCHOOL DISTRICT OF
WEST DE PERE
The school district is in the preliminary stages
of developing a facilities plan to address the
massive enrollment growth it has experienced
within the past five years. A recent enrollment
study conducted on behalf of the school
district by the University of Wisconsin projects
that the trend will continue. Our current
facilities will soon reach capacity. As such, we
are interested in your thoughts and opinion.
