Health Report - Stakeholders Grouo
The news on the G.P. front is not all good. This has been a
trying time for us all and it is not yet over. Both Mac and
myself have met with our M.P. as well as being in touch with
HFA and Dr Pat Farry, who is the Medical Director of Rural
I{ealth in Dunedin. Pat rang me this afternoon. He is in
discussion with a locum GP at present who he is hoping to
comc in a month or so. In the meantime he is looking to fly
via chopper Gps from Wanaka and Queenstown into Fox,
Wbataroa and Hari llari to do weekly clinics. He tells me
tbat we are top of the list for a GP and we are in a crisis that
needs to be addressed. I feel today that we may be getting
somewhere. Coast Health Care also have, subject to
confirmation, other locums to come for a short time at the
end of September and in October, with the hope of a GP for
6 montbs in November. This is now confirmed, to be
followed by another in April for six months with the right to
renEw. So we will keep on this and as soon as possible we'll
bring you up to date. Like I said this is a trying time for us
all. I think we need to say a big thank you to our District
Nurses. They are doing a gxeat job and we do appreciate this.
We dso know tlp need in their case for a doctor. Lets hope it
won't be for too much longer.
The working bee around the Dr's house and
Whataroa clinic took place on 2lst August. Thanks to Rex
Douglas ftom Ferguson's Bush, Anne Dennehy, Clare
Ilansen and Kevin Hansen from Whataroa. Clare's lunch
was most appreciated. A good day's work well done.
The Healthline is moving along. A lot of input was
put in at the meeting in Greymouth. Some issues raised
were:
Patchin' Friends of Hari Hari host first annual
Coast Quilters get together
The last weekend of July saw the Hari Hari Area School full
with buqy patchworkers who came from Karamea to Franz
Josef. Three classes were held and many folks were
introduced to the fun and creativity of patchwork for the first
time. During tea breaks, at breakfasts, lunches and dinner
there were plenty of chances for all the patchworkers to meet
and share and to shop. They all went home with lighter
pockets and bags heary with patchwork fabric. The dinner
on Saturday night also saw the certificates handed out for the
quilts in the challenge "A West Coast Dream". 15 quilts
were entered for this with a wide interpretation of what each
of what each patchworker saw as their West Coast dream.
AJter dinner 'show and tell' produced around 70 quilts that
were hung around the communiqv hall. On Sunday morning
farnities and ftienCs came to look at both the show and !9ll
quilts and work being done in classes.
The weekenC was such a success that Greymouth
will host a weetcend next year and Karamea the year after.
The Patchin' Fiends of Hari Hari would like to
thank Creative New Zealand and REAP for financial help to
have the tutors. The Lions Club of South Westland for the
hall hrre. The local scouts group for yummy lunches. The
local CWI iadies for a great dinner on the Saturday night.

Why Healthline was being introduced
What needs CIse$lqe![ had been done
What is known about people who don't access services at the
moment and whether Healthline would make a difference for
those people.
Getting access to Healthline - people without telephones;
also people with toll bars on phones can't access 0800
Knowledge about local services:- Service providers would
need to have detailed, accurate and up-todate information
about local services
The people on the phones the need for good telephone and
listening skills - extensive knowledge of local services and
extensive medical knowledge
Follow on services It was agre€d that the linkages between
Healthline and the services they referred people to would be
critical to the success of the service. A number of issues were
identified, including the difficulty people without cars etc
will have accessing the services that are recommended and
the financial incentive for people to continue using the
hospital emergency department. The person's GP should
receive information about the advice that has been given and
any referrals that had been made.
These are some issues bought up and will be worked
througlr before January lst. I think it will be a good service
for us in the south and will be interested to see how it goes.
I hope the ladies in the age group are getting in on
the free mammogranrme service. It's the old saying "use it or
lose it" . Lets hope not.
If anyone wants to know more on any issue don't
hesitate to contact either Mac Macrae or myself.

1999. It was a gteatcampaign in true Woodham Shield style.
Special congratulations must go to Robin Manera and his
Fox Combined team who held the shield at the end.
Next year marks the Jubilee of the shield's presentation by
the Woodham Family in 1950. To mark the occasion the
Hari Hari RFC would like to make the following proposal.
To succeed it would need the blessing of the Woodham
Family as we are ctranging the rules for a year and also the
support of the four clubs involved and the parent club, the
South Westland RFC. What do you think?
The proposal is as follows:

A special condition would be that the winner would hold the

God's Generosity and our resoonse
By the time you read this I will have been at synod which is thtAGM of the Diocese with the parish representatives for this
region.
The Book of Exodus tells the climax of the story of how God rescued the people of Israel from slavery and bondage in Egypt. God
led the people of Israel into the promised -land and expected them to show honour and love God and to live in
co^^".riry
";ust a society
unlike the slavery which the Pharaoh had imposed on them. Unfortunarcly the Israelites under their kings dweloped
which had more in common with the style of the Pbaraoh than of the vision for a just society which God placed before them in the
gling of the law at Sinai. They failed to treat tbe poor among them properly and instead thiy enslaved the weak rather than
following God's exodus example by liberating them. The prophets criticizeA them for this and wentgally Israel lost the freedom
God had given in the exodus, in the exile in Babylon. Much of the Old Testament was finally put together during this exile in
Babylon as the people tried to make sense of the calamity tbat had happcnod to them.
The parable of the unforgiving servant captur€s in a nutsbell this whole sorry story. Generosity is a key attribute of God
and the abundance ofcreation attests to it as do the Scriptures. As thc beneficiaries oittris generosity, in particular through
Christ' we as the Church need to show forth this generosity in our own life and in our dealings wittr, others. This generoslty can
be about money as in the parable. It can also be about how we access the motives of others and how much of ourselves we will
share with others in the church to enable warm friendships to dwelop. It is a joy for me to recognise this spirit of generosity
growing around the churches ofthis region because this is the key to builalng churches which are vibrant and mission focused.
tvlay Crod bless you.
Andrew Starkv.
