C ONTINUING TO P UT FIRST THINGS FIRST!
December is a very short month in
Quincy Public Schools due to
winter break which begins on
Wednesday, December 21st. We
have been talking with the students about putting first things
first. When we put our BIG
Rocks first, we still have time for
fun. Big rocks may be school
work or homework and chores at
home. With a lot of excitement
going on around us with the holidays, it’s important to put first
things first!
Parents please take time to fill
out the 5 Essential Survey that is
available on the QPS website.
Click on Parent /Community
Information and then click on the
5 Essential Survey at the top of
the page. Thank you in advance
for completing this survey.
We will have our annual winter program on Thursday, December 15th at
6:00 p.m. at the Kroc Center. Doors
will open at 5:30 with priority seating
given to parents of students that are
in drama club. All students are asked
to arrive no later than 5:45 as the
performance will begin on time at
6:00. All families are invited to attend. Please note that theater behavior will be expected to ensure the
success of this event. Children not
participating in the performance will
need to sit with their parents and are
asked to use their “listening skills” for
30 minutes. If you think that your
child that does not attend Berrian
cannot listen for this period of time,
please consider making arrangements
for them to stay home with a

caregiver. Thank you for your consideration.
Once again Berrian will be offering
the Christmas Shop to support our
scholarship program for graduating
high school seniors that attended
Berrian Elementary School. Students may bring in money to purchase gifts for their family members.
An adult will be available to help
supervise the shopping as well as
help students find the perfect gift!
Wishing everyone a very hopeful
and happy holiday season!

FAMILY CHALLENGE
THANK YOU...for texting a picture to the teacher, posting a picture to the Berrian
Facebook page, or having your child draw a picture of your family doing the activity!!!
These have been posted on the bulletin board outside the cafeteria. In October, 41%
of our families successfully completed the Challenge! That is an increase up from
39% in September...YAY! We are looking forward to this number rising as more Berrian families complete the Challenge.
Our goal is that 60% of our Berrian families will complete the 7-Habits activity
every month.
NOTE: There will be no Family Challenge form sent home in December.
Be looking for one in January 2017.

Congratulations!
Our behavior referral forms will begin to look different. Over the coming weeks,
QPS will be writing office referrals in the online Skyward program. The referrals
will still be on colored paper. This will help you distinguish what type of referral
your child received.
An Act of Violence/Inappropriate School Behavior referral will still be on green
paper. An office incident referral will be on blue; and if a second office incident
referral were to be given, it will be on red paper.
If you have any questions about this new process please contact Lynne Scholz,
Prevention Education Counselor at Berrian Elementary.

Listen, laugh, learn

Listen to audio books while you're traveling to visit family, wrapping gifts or cooking
for the holidays.

Lyrics to holiday songs are fun to read and sing together. It is also good fun and good
collaborative writing practice to make up your own lyrics to familiar tunes.

Start a story telling tradition by revisiting holidays of the past. Old family photographs
at holiday gatherings will help prompt stories abut your own life and family traditions.

Our school can earn money
by scanning your shopping
receipts?
You can send your receipts to Berrian or you can download the app “Shoparoo” and scan the receipts yourself.
Snap pictures of your receipts from any store big or small,
that sells grocery items to earn Roo Points (cash donations) for our school. Whether you're shopping at a supercenter, dollar store, or convenience store - it doesn't matter where you shop or what items you buy—Shoparoo will
make a cash donation for every receipt! You can submit up
to 20 grocery receipts within a rolling 7 day period.
There's no easier way for our school to earn money!

As the weather is getting colder please
remember proper clothing is essential.
Warm hats, gloves, scarves and coats will
ensure your child the protection needed.
Please write your child’s name on clothes
items when possible. If needing any assistance with these items please contact the
school nurse.
Strep throat seems to occur all year long.
Some have a headache or a stomach ache
without a sore throat. Some have nausea
and vomiting. Some are quite sick while
others are fairly chipper. The throat can
look normal, or it can be red, swollen, and
covered with a white slimy coating. Some
have “strep breath” (you know it when
you smell it), a red swollen uvula (the
little thing that hangs down in the
back of your throat), strawberry
tongue, (red tongue with raised white
taste buds), and petechiae (tiny reddish
purple dots near the uvula at the back of
the throat or on the roof of the mouth.
remember to check your child's head for
lice. Treat their head and your home
items as needed.
It is recommended to check with your
doctor when your child complains of a sore
throat. If your child is diagnosed with
strep throat he/she may return to school 24
hours after starting antibiotics if the fever is
gone without the help of Tylenol or Motrin.
Tis the season for chapped lips! Teach
your children although licking their lips
might feel better temporarily, it actually
makes it worse. Some kids also develop a
lip-licking habit. Feel free to send chap
stick to school with your child during
winter months.
Strep can be prevented by washing hands,
disinfecting surfaces, and avoiding contact
with other people’s saliva and mucus.
Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow. Discourage sharing food and drinks
and kissing on the lips. Keep sick children
home from school, and keep sick people
away from your family.
ENJOY A HEALTHY HOLIDAY
SEASON
