products. You have chosen a state-of-the-art scale that features a
precision load cell-weighing mechanism. As with all Pelouze
products, Models PS20DL/PS40DL received careful inspection and
testing in accordance with our stringent manufacturing standards.
One of our highest priorities is to establish a long term business
relationship with our customers by manufacturing products of the
highest quality and dependability. Our reputation is based on over

Your Pelouze Scale is easy to use, however, it is important that you
read and carefully follow the instructions in this manual. Once you
are completely familiar with the proper operating procedures and
special features you will be able to use the scale efficiently. Be sure

How to Download
Set up your
scale
Connect RJ11 end of the cable (the one that looks
like a phone cord connector) into your scale.
Connect serial end of the cable to PC.
Connect power adapter to scale and wall outlet, or
insert a new battery.
Start your Web browser and login to
www.pelouze.com.
Once you are at www.pelouze.com you
will need to register and download files
containing client software, client license,
and rate files to your PC.
Follow the directions on the website to register
and download the files. Additional information can
be found in the guides by clicking on the Quick
Reference Guide link.

from your PC to your new scale.
Turn on your scale. Open the Client
Software on your PC by opening
the file Pelstar (default location is
C:\Program Files\Pelstar).
First time users will see the following screen.

How to Update Rates In a
Previously Registered Scale

IN from the home page. If you are not using the
same PC you used to register the scale, you
must transfer the client software files from the
original PC to the one you are using to download
the new rates.

original registration process (registered email

Turn on your scale. From your PC open the
Client Software by opening the file Pelstar
(default location is C:\Program Files\Pelstar).
Download the new rates from your PC to your
scale. Refer to page 7 for more information.

How to Use the PS20DL/PS40DL
For AC Operation:
1.Plug adapter into jack at rear of scale then into outlet (Standard
120V).
2.It is recommended to operate the scale with the adapter for longterm use. Please use the adapter that you received with your
purchase.
For Battery Operation:
1.Turn scale over.
2.Remove battery cover.
3.Use 9 Volt alkaline or lithium battery.
4.Install battery following illustration on battery compartment floor.
Battery will not fit if polarity is reversed. Do Not Force!
5.Insert terminal end of battery into compartment first.
6.Replace cover.
To Turn Scale On:
1.Platform should be clear of all objects.
2.Press Power button once.
3.Display will briefly show all LCD functions and flash briefly.
4.Display will default to “straight” weigh mode.
5.Scale will default to previous Units used.
Fundamentals of Correctly Weighing an Object:
1.Press Power button to turn scale on.
2.Wait for display to show zero or press the Tare button.
3.Place object on platform distributing weight of package evenly
over the platform.
a.Place small packages on the center of the platform.
b.Large packages should be placed with their center of gravity
over the center of the platform. This balances the package so that
it does not tip or lean in any direction.
c. Use letter holder for oversized envelopes.
4.Weight is determined when fluctuating stops.
5.If rate calculating is desired, press Carrier key to select carrier.
Once carrier is selected, press Calculate Rate key.

6.Follow the steps on the display (see detailed instructions for each
carrier on the pages that follow). Pushing the Enter button
accepts your input.
7.If comparing rates is desired, use the Carrier key to toggle
through the carriers. If the carrier offers the Arrival Mode you
selected, the appropriate rate will be displayed. If they do not
offer the selected Arrival service, the display will indicate “NO
SRVC”
• Auto Off – Power will automatically turn off after approximately
2 minutes of inactivity when operated with battery.
• Constant On – When operated with the AC Adapter, power will
remain ON until turned off manually.
To Get a Zero Reading:
1.Remove objects from platform.
2.Press Hold button once.
-Pressing Hold during any function brings you back to the
beginning (default screen after power on)
Tare Feature - To get a Zero Reading with an object on
the platform:
• Tare feature permits you to separate the weight of a container
from its contents.
1.Start with a “0.0” display.
2.Place empty container on platform.
3.When weight reading has stabilized, press Tare button once.
4.Place objects in its container.
5.Display will show weight of contents only
6.After removing container, press Tare once to return display to
zero.

Rates are calculated on a ZIP code to ZIP code basis
1st Class (under 13 oz) / Priority (over 13 oz)**
1.Press Carrier key until cursor is on USPS.
2.Place item on platform
3.Press Calculate Rate key
4.If weight is 13 oz. or less, display will highlight “1ST Class”,
weight and rate.
5.If weight is over 13 oz. display will show “PRIORITY and will
prompt you to enter a Destination ZIP Code.
6.Input Destination ZIP Code
7.Press Enter.
8.Display will show “Priority”, weight and rate.
9.Use UP and DN arrow keys to toggle between USPS services to
compare rates.
Certified-Use after selecting USPS as your carrier
Note: Certified Mail can be used with 1st Class and Priority Mail
services only
1.If Certified is desired press the button once. The display will
show “CERTIF.”
2.The scale will add the Certified charge to the display.
3.Ready to be sent
4.If Return Receipt is desired with Certified, press the associated
button. “RET REC” is displayed.
5.Pressing this button again will remove the service.
Registered-Use after selecting USPS as your carrier
Note: Registered Mail can be used with 1st Class and Priority Mail
services only
1.If Registered is desired press the button once. The display will
show “REG.”
2.The scale will add the Registered charge to the display.

1.Follow the directions for 1st Class/Priority through step 4.
2.If scale prompts you to enter a ZIP Code, press Enter.
3.Press Canada or Mexico button for appropriate rate. “INT CAN” or “INT
MEX” will be displayed along with the rate.
4.Item is ready to be sent.
5.No additional Services are available for these selections. (i.e. COD, Ins.)

carriers. If the Arrival choice is offered by that carrier, the rate will
be shown. If they do not offer that arrival service the scale will
display “NO SRVC.”
To Use Special Functions (COD & Insurance)
COD – US Postal Service
1. Use after determining rate for selected class of service.
2.Press COD button once.
3. Display will show COD and request amount to be collected
4. Enter value in whole dollars. Press Clear/Esc to delete last digit
entered.
5. Press Enter button to accept.
6. Display will add COD rate to total.
7. Item is ready to be sent.
8. Pressing this button again will remove the service.
COD – United Parcel Service, Federal Express & Airborne
1.Use after determining rate for selected class of service.
2.Press COD button once.
3.Display will show “COD”.
4.Display will add the COD charge to the total.

Insurance – UPS, FedEx & Airborne
• At this time, there is no additional fee for insurance on packages
under $100.00 in value.

2.Press Insurance button once.
3.Display will request value of item. (Scale Limit of $50,000)
4.Enter value in whole dollars.
5.Press Enter to accept.
6.Display will add Insurance cost to total.

To Compare Rates by Carrier
1.Select Arrival mode.
2.Use Carrier key to select desired carrier.
3.Associated Rate for carrier will be shown.
4.Continue to press Carrier key to view other carrier rates.
5.Scale will only display available like services. (e.g. 1st Day Early
A.M. delivery is only available from UPS and FedEx.)

Key-Pad Options
Power Button
• Turns scale on and off.
Enter Button
• Inputs desired commands or digits.
Calculate Rate Button
• Starts the process of calculating rates.
Hold Button
• The Hold Feature allows the user to determine shipping charges for large
packages which obscure the display.
• The Hold Feature is automatically activated when the scale calculates rates.
1.Press the Hold button. Hold will flash on the display.
2.Place the item on the platform.
3.Scale will “beep” when the weight has registered..
4.Remove item from the platform.
5.Continue using scale as normal to determine rates.
6.The hold feature will remain on until deactivated.
7.To deactivate the hold feature:
a. Press the Hold button or
b. Turn off the Scale.
8.The Hold button can also be pressed to start over.
Carrier Button
• Allows the user to select the desired carrier. (USPS, UPS, FedEx &
Airborne)
Clear/Esc Button
• The Clear/Escape if pressed once will allow the user to return to the
previous screen or to reenter a number.
• The Clear/Escape if pressed and held will clear ALL previously selections.
Lb/Kg Button
• Allows the convenience of selecting between Standard (Pounds) or Metric
(Kilograms) units.
Tare Button
•Separates the weight of a container from its contents.
Note: The total combined weight of a container and its contents should not
exceed 21 lbs. for the PS20DL and 42 lbs. for the PS40DL.
UP and DN Arrow Buttons
• Toggle between input choices. (e.g. Letter/Package,
Commercial/Residential and carrier arrival options).

Error Messages
• This unique scale tells you when something is wrong. “INVALID
ENTRY” will appear on the LCD indicating an error. Some
examples of common errors are:
1. Incompatible services are selected (example - Certified &
Registered together).
2.A value exceeding $1000.00 was entered for COD.
3.Return Rec button is pressed without COD or insurance.
4.Weight is over 8 ounces for FedEx LetterPackage.
Care and Cleaning
•Your Pelouze Scale is a precision instrument, engineered to provide
years of valuable service. Care should be given to maintain its
accuracy and appearance.
Protect your scale from:
1.Exposure to extreme temperatures. (Do not leave in direct sunlight).
2.Exceeding the weight capacity.
3.Liquid spills
4.Do not leave objects on the scale platform when not in use.
5.This scale should be cleaned by wiping with a soft, damp cloth.

United States Postal Service
• Certified mail – A service that provides the sender with a mailing receipt.
A delivery record is maintained by the USPS. This type of mail must be
sent at First-Class Mail or Priority Mail rates. Certified mail may be
combined with return receipt service and restricted delivery service.
• Collect on Delivery (COD) – A service for mailers who need to mail an
article for which they have not received payment. The amount due the
sender is collected from the addressee and the USPS returns the amount
due to the sender.
• Express Mail – A mail class that provides expedited delivery service. This
is the fastest mail service offered by the USPS. Express Mail International
Service is available between the United States and most foreign countries.
• First-Class Mail – A class of mail that includes all matter wholly or partly
in writing or typewriting, all actual and personal correspondence, all bills
and statements of account, and all matter sealed or otherwise closed
against inspection. Any mailable matter may be sent as First-Class Mail.
• Insured Mail – A service that provides indemnity coverage for a lost,
rifled, or damaged article, subject to the standards for the service and
payment of the applicable fee. Insurance is available for merchandise sent
as First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, Express Mail, and Package Services
(includes Parcel Post).
• Parcel Post – A subclass of Package Services with rates based generally
on weight and zone.
• Priority Mail – Priority Mail is a subclass of First-Class Mail comprising
First-Class Mail that weighs more than 13 ounces and, at the mailer’s
option, any other mail matter weighing less than 13 ounces mailed at
Priority Mail rates. Priority Mail provides expedited delivery. Any mailable
matter may be sent as Priority Mail. For Priority Mail shipments weighing
less than 13 oz, please consult your USPS Rate Guide or www.usps.com
for the appropriate postage rate.

• Registered Mail – A service by which, through a system of receipts, the
USPS monitors the movement of a piece of First-Class Mail from the
point of acceptance by the USPS to delivery. The sender receives a
receipt at the time of mailing, and delivery record is maintained by the
USPS. This service also provides optional indemnity in case of loss or
damage. Registered mail is the most secure service offered by the
USPS. Compare to certified mail and insured mail. Registered mail must
be sent at First-Class Mail or Priority Mail rates.
Payment Contract
•Please note your first download is free. You are eligible for an
additional free update if any rates go up within the first 60 days of
purchase.
Payment plans are as follows:
1.Pay as you go ($19.99) - Pay per rate increase.
2.1 year plan ($29.99) - Unlimited downloads of rates for 1 year.
3.2 year plan ($39.99) - Unlimited downloads of rates for 2 years.

1. What is my username for the Downloadable scales website?
A.The username is the user's registered e-mail address.
2. What if I cannot remember my password to my client software?
A. A user can re-set the password on the client software by redownloading the client license.
3. Do I have to pay for my first download?
A. No. The first download is free as well as any downloads made 60
days thereafter.
4. My scale doesn't weigh properly or it doesn't weigh at all.
A. Ensure black tabs are removed from between platform and base. If
the problem still occurs, please call Technical Support at 1-800-638-3722.

5. How do I know if my rates have been downloaded to my scale properly?
A. The date of the last successful update is shown in the upper right hand
corner of your display.
6. What if my scale will not communicate with my computer?
A. Either the scale is off, another device's software is occupying that port,
the cable is non-functional, or the COM port is not functioning. If any of
these issues cannot be resolved, please contact Technical Support @ 1800-638-3722.
7. What do I do if I am having problems with my COM Port?
A. From the Pelstar [Scale list] pull-down menu on your PC, select Option
–> Set COM Port. You will notice the default COM port selected will be
COM 1. If the download does not work, select COM 2, COM 3 or COM 4
and try to download again.
8.Are the downloadable scales compatible with Apple software?
A. Not currently.

Limited One Year Warranty
What Does this Warranty Cover?
Pelstar LLC scales are warranted from date of purchase against defects of materials or in
workmanship for a period of 1 year. If product fails to function properly, return the product,
prepaid and properly packed to Pelstar. If manufacturer determines that a defect of material or
in workmanship exists, customers' sole remedy will be repair or replacement of scale at no
charge. Replacement will be made with a new or remanufactured product or component. If the
product is no longer available, replacement may be made with a similar product of equal or
greater value. All parts including repaired and replaced parts are covered only for the original
warranty period.
Who is Covered?
The original purchaser of the product must have proof of purchase to receive warranty
service. Pelstar dealers or retail stores selling Pelstar products do not have the right to alter,
or modify or any way change the terms and conditions of this warranty.
What is Excluded?
Your warranty does not cover normal wear of parts or damage resulting from any of the
following: negligent use or misuse of the product, use on improper voltage or current, use
contrary to the operating instruction, abuse including tampering, damage in transit, or
unauthorized repair or alterations. Further, the warranty does not cover Acts of God, such as
fire, flood, hurricanes and tornadoes. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you
may also have other rights that vary from state to state, province to province or jurisdiction to
jurisdiction.
To get Warranty Service
Make sure you keep your sales receipt or document showing proof of purchase.
Call 1 (800) 638-3722 to receive a return authorization. Attach proof of purchase to your
defective product along with your name, address, daytime telephone number and description
of the problem. Carefully package the product and send with shipping and insurance prepaid

If your scale is not covered by warranty, or has been damaged, an estimate of repair costs or
replacement costs will be provided to you for approval prior to servicing or replacing.
