
Identify incorrect or inappropriate specimens.

Knowing the appropriate means of informing the nursing station or physician of the inappropriate specimen.

Identify the preferred specimen to be used for the selected test in each department.

Identify the storage requirements for specimens for selected procedures in each department.


Correctly process laboratory specimens received in the department, including centrifugation, serum or plasma
separation, and storage containers.
Explain the principle of the selected laboratory procedures performed in the laboratory.

Explain patient collection procedures for random urine, clean catch urine, and 24 hour urine.

Prepare a plan of appropriate safety procedures for each department in the lab.

Demonstrate proper techniques including manual and/or automated techniques

Demonstrate the proper procedure for disposing of contaminated materials; including plates, pipettes, pipette
tips; specimen tubes or containers glass slides, needles and syringes.

Differentiate between control, standard, and calibrator.

Understand the quality control program for each laboratory department.

Properly record daily freezer, Water-bath, refrigerator temperature readings.

State the normal ranges of the selected tests in each department, including age and sex variations.

Interpret patients test results as normal or abnormal, identify possible disease states.

List interfering substances and source of errors for the selected test within each department.

Differentiate between false positive and false negative results.

Identify causes for false negative and false positive results for the selected tests in each department.

Suggest possible solutions to technical problems that the student encounters during the clinical rotation.

Report problems to the clinical instructor when they are detected.
