Winnipeg Montessori School April 2017 Newsletter Welcome back. We hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break. We are looking forward to the warmer weather and getting outside for a little longer every day. During April we will be learning about the signs of spring. Just a reminder, with rain boots and jackets replacing snowsuits, please make sure all items are labelled with your child’s name. Artist Piet Mondrian Our next study we will focus on the Dutch Artist Piet Mondrian. Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands in 1872, and received his formal training there. He is possibly best known for being one of the founders of De Stijl, which incorporated an art movement that worked around abstract works, and the new art forms that were being introduced to the world in the early 20th century. The movement was also based on the reductive theory; which took a larger scale image, and brought it to life on the canvas, in architectural works, and in sculpture forms and well as in the form of graphic arts. Mondrian’s earliest work used pure, glowing colors and expressive brushwork to depict still life images and landscape design. He developed his neoplastic style during World War I with works using lighter colors, simplified color selection and balanced form. Around 1932, Mondrian became fascinated with the idea of the line and dismantling the very definition of painting. Our young artists here at Winnipeg Montessori will explore painting using bold lines and primary colors based on Mondrian’s later paintings, including “Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red”. Children will practice precise brush movement and graphic design. The children will also be learning to use a variety of mediums for artistic expression and design, including tape, clay, and pastels.
