JUNE 2016 GRAND TIMES 3801 Grand, Your choice for Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care Spotlight on: Don Schmidt Celebrating June Women’s Golf Month Audio Book Appreciation Month Say Something Nice Day June 1 Men’s Health Week June 12–19 Father’s Day June 19 Take Your Dog to Work Day June 24 There are people in this world that one can’t help but to just instantly smile when we see them. Don Schmidt is one. His smile is absolutely contagious, and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen him without one! If you’re ever having a rough day, come visit with Don and I promise you’ll leave with a smile on your face. Don grew up in New Hampton, Iowa along with four brothers and one sister. His father had a restaurant there and his uncle ran a hotel. Don’s first job was helping his uncle with the bar. In high school, Don started dating Mary Theresa. After graduating high school Don enlisted in the Navy. While in the Navy Mary Theresa went down to Florida and they got married! The two of them had three children together – Julie, Tom and Jeanie. Don had many hobbies that he enjoyed taking part in. One of his biggest loves was and still is radio. Don says his brother got him into them and he really enjoyed the mechanics of it. He even built his own. He went to radio school and became a ham operator. He won many awards and competitions over the years. He also did amateur radio, and talked to people in different countries all over the world. He will gladly tell you all about it! Don also enjoyed doing model planes and boats, target shoot and ride Ragbrai. The last time he rode Ragbrai, he was 70 years old! How impressive is that! If you have some free time, go on over and see Don. I know he would happily tell you a story or two about his life. He has accomplished great things in his life! www.3801Grand.com ~interviewed by Amanda Poganski Employee of the month, June 2016 – Mary Coon Summer is here and things are in full bloom at 3801 Grand! Derrick Johnson Mary has been with us nearly two years, having joined our 3801 Grand family in August, 2014, as a CNA in our Personal Care Department. Mary takes pride in providing the best care possible for our residents and she does it all with a cheerful smile. She always lends a hand when needed to help out whenever and wherever she is needed, whether it is assisting her coworkers or other staff. In her spare time, Mary keeps quite busy, too. In addition to raising “Sugar Gliders,” small marsupials similar to flying squirrels, Mary also enjoys reading, traveling, and genealogy research. This summer she will combine two of these fun pursuits when she travels to Cornwall in England to research more of her family history.
