F.O.I.L (Multiply) Polynomials

Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Polynomials
F.O.I.L (Multiply) Polynomials
Grade Level: 9
Overview
Objective
Students will learn how to multiply polynomials using the
Distributive Properties and the FOIL method.



Standards
The student will be able to participate in group
discussion and respect each other's opinion.
The student will be able to multiply polynomials by
using the Distributive Property.
Given 2 polynomials, the student will be able to
multiply using the FOIL pattern.
Standard 6: A1.6.4 Multiply polynomials.

Procedure
1. Put up FOIL transparency.
Overhead Projector
Dry Erase Markers
Pencils
Transparencies
Teacher Notes
Copies of Homework Handout
Prepare Answer Key for Homework Handout
2. Review terms.
3. Review the first problem on the transparency using
the Distributive Property.
"Does everybody remember how we used the
Distributive Property?"
4. Show the class what FOIL stands for.

Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Polynomials
5. Put up Gubb List transparency to remind students of
the steps that they must take when using the
Distributive and FOIL methods.
6. Do the first example on the transparency using the
FOIL method, step-by-step.
7. Model 3 examples of multiplying binomials using FOIL
on the chalkboard, first using the Distributive
Property and then using the FOIL method.
8. Put 2 more problems on the chalkboard and ask for 2
volunteers to work the problems at the board while
the others do the problems at their seats
(I will be monitoring their work as I walk around,
troubleshooting any problems)
9. Show the students how to multiply a binomial by a
Evaluation

trinomial on the chalkboard, term-by-term (2
examples)
Informally assess students' progress and help
troubleshoot problems during the lesson.

Informally assess students by asking them what to do
next when solving examples on the chalkboard.

Formally assess students when grading homework.

Distribute homework handout and give directions.
