The Specification
Unit 4 of the new GCSE Classical Civilisation specification, Greece and Rome: An
Evaluative Study, is assessed by controlled assessment. During the Research and Planning
phase of the controlled assessment, students are required to keep a record of their work in a
Research Diary.
Section 3.4 of the Specification says this:
Candidates should record their work in a research diary. An example of a research
diary will be published in the Teacher Resource Bank. Candidates should use the
diary when writing up their controlled assessment. However, the research diary
should not include lengthy passages of prose which the candidate simply copies out
in the final assessment. You should retain the diary once the task has been
completed. The diary itself will not be assessed, but it will provide evidence that the
controlled assessment is the candidate’s own work and may be called for by the
moderator if necessary. You should retain the research diary until the deadline for
enquiries about results.
The Research Diary must include
• details of all sources (books, webpages etc.) used
• notes taken from these sources
• details of any work conducted in pairs or groups.
It may include
brief quotations
an essay plan.
•
•
It must not include
lengthy quotations
a practice essay.

The Research Diary
This may take many forms. It may be a blank notebook in which the student can make
notes, or it may be a specially designed booklet. Students may also use blank or lined
paper, but if they do so this must be secured by a treasury tag as otherwise there is a
significant risk of pages being lost.
Sample Research Diary
The following pages give an example of what a Research Diary might look like. It
demonstrates several elements of good practice.
1. The instructions on the first page remind students of what they may and may not write in
the Research Diary.
2. There are spaces for the student’s notes and for the teacher’s comments.
3. There is a separate page where the student can list all the sources he or she has used.
4. There is a grid to help the student plan his or her essay.
You may photocopy this sample Research Diary and use it with your students if you wish.
Alternatively you may design a Research Diary to suit the individual needs of your students
or provide them with any suitable blank notebook.

This diary is a record of the Research and Planning phase of your Controlled
Assessment. It will provide evidence, for your teacher and AQA, that your final
Controlled Assessment assignment is based on your own research and that the ideas in
it are your own.
You may take this diary into the room when you write up your assignment.
Make notes on anything you might want to use in your assignment in this diary.
Your notes may include
o short quotations, including details of where you found the quotation
o diagrams and sketches.
Your notes must not include
o lengthy passages of prose (i.e. full paragraphs) which you will simply copy out in your
final assessment.
Keep a record of all the sources you use in the Bibliography on page 11. Sources
include books, websites, DVDs, CD ROMs etc.
If you work with a partner or in a group, make a note of who you work with in this diary.
Use page 12 to plan your final assignment.
Once you have started to write up your final piece of work you will not be allowed to add
anything to this diary.
You must hand this diary in with your Controlled Assessment assignment.
