Grand Knight’s Message
Supreme named this year The Year
of the Volunteer and I am starting
to see bigger commitments from
many knights. Case in point is the
Janysek’s. Gene and Jason have
been working in and around the hall
the last few weeks, doing clean-up ,
repairs and improvements. The
council is pleased with their work which was
badly needed. Also, recognition has to go to Edmund Dominquez, Roland Barcena and Alex
Vasquez for spearheading the softball tournament
fundraiser to be held Sept 12th. They are already
planning to help with and chair other fundraisers.
It is a breath of fresh air to see these knights stepping up to the plate. Leaders are being made and
the future of Council 4140 is looking good.
The annual Nun’s Appreciation is being held on
Sunday, September 20th, 2009. Please refer to the
enclosed article in this newsletter. Donations are
needed . If you can provide a gift card, this would
help also. Please refer to Luciano and Diane
Dominquez or Laura Boone. These Nun’s love
this event so lets help them really have a good
time. Many volunteers are needed for this event,
especially vehicles to give rides.
Forty Days For Life starts next month. We will be
helping staff an overnight vigil. Please let me know
if you can help. Our date will be set at the Sep.
General meeting. This is a great way to earn your
Ace Wings. Ending abortion must be attained.
May God Bless All of You .

News Release
Our Chaplain, Msgr. O‘Gorman volunteered some
of our wives who are members of St. Gregory‘s Alter Society to clean and polish all the sacred vessels,
the chalice‘s, ciborium‘s and pattan‘s used during
the Eucharistic celebration. Elise Casanova, Rose
Hannasch and Bell Sandera took on the project. At
our recent installation Mass Msgr. suggested covers
to protect these vessels. Rose Hannasch took on the
project. She purchased the special cloth (pacific
cloth) for this purpose. She donated the material,
her time and many many hours to cut, sow and assemble a cover for each vessel. We strongly urge
whomever is in charge of a function involving the
Holy Sacrfice of the Mass to treat these sacred vessels with respect and care. And rreturn them to their
proper cover in the altar closet. Replacements are
very expensive. Thanks again lady‘s for helping.
Food Drive
Council 4140 is having an ongoing food
drive to help the needy. Please bring a bag
of non-perishables to every meeting.
Currently we are helping the pantry at St.
Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
You can donate food to any parish you
wish but items donated at the hall
Will go to St. Gregory’s.

Ladies Activities
Amidst tables filled with donated items, a table of refreshments to
enjoy and door prizes to win, over 16 Ladies successfully packed
160 welcome bags and 20 door prizes for the September Nun‘s Appreciation. Many thanks to those Ladies for their dedicated time.
Thanks also to donors for the multitude of donations. Ladies will
meet in September to complete about 80 more welcome bags. Please
continue to bring in donations (toiletries, cups, pens, cards, etc.) for
this project. Also, bring in donations for door prizes and bingo prizes (gift cards, etc.)
Remember the Nun‘s Appreciation is on Sunday, September 20. Call Luciano and Diana
Dominguez (647-4983) to volunteer to assist with cooking, serving, transportation, decorating and registration.
Are you ready to enjoy a full service potato bar? Then skip the dinner table in the hall and
come to the Ladies Activity on Tuesday, 13 October 2009. Look to fill your plate with a variety of potato stuffing, dessert and beverages. In addition, see if you are the lucky one to win a
door prize. We have fun—come join us!!

“
A TIME TO REMEMBER”
MEMORIAL MASS
NOVEMBER 10, 2009
Our annual Memorial Mass will take place Tuesday, November
10, 2009, in place of our regular general meeting. This date is set aside to remember our Brother Knights who have gone home to their eternal reward.
We encourage as many widows, family members, friends and Brother Knights
to attend.
Mass will begin at 7:00 PM. The Fourth degree has been invited to attend
adding dignity, respect and color to the ceremony. The names of the deceased
brothers will be read after the homily. Our celebrant will light a candle for all
of our religious brother knights. If a family member or representative is not
present, a Past Grand Knight will be asked to light a candle for that member.
This format will be followed throughout the ceremony. Our Grand Knight
will complete the memorial by lighting a large candle representing all our deceased mothers, wives and widows.
Upon the completion of the Memorial Mass, a light meal will be served. We
ask our lady’s to please bring a dessert of their choice for all to enjoy.
We encourage one and all to attend the Memorial Mass as the solemnity of
the service, the religious music, the Holy Mass, the Fourth Degree presence in
regalia, and the lighting ceremony will bring honor and respect to our deceased members.
Any family of deceased members who will attend and wish to participate in
the candle lighting ceremony are asked to call Gene Mireles at 210-706-9698
to RSVP. Please leave a message if I’m not home and I will call you back.
This is a beautiful night when we remember all the Knights who made
Council 4140 such a grand organization. Hope to see you there.
Respectfully,
Gene Mireles
Memorial Mass Chairman

Nun’s Appreciation Dinner
Council 4140 will be holding its annual Nun’s Appreciation Dinner
At the Council hall Sunday, September 20th, 2009.
Please refer to the enclosed article in this month’s bulletin where
itemized request is being made for donated items. The wives have
been working diligently preparing baskets for gifts. Gift cards in
addition can be donated.
Please be kind and help as there are 250 bags to be filled. This is a
council function, not a fundraiser, so all donations are appreciated.
Donations of wine can be made as these will be also be given as door
prizes. Anyone who can donate liter bottles of soda and liquor bottles
for the participants will also help in curbing expenses so that more
can be used to entertain, feed and supply the nun’s.
Donations can be brought by the hall or co-ordinate with the chairpersons.
Your generosity will be deeply appreciated.
Chairperson’s are Luciano and Diane Dominquez, 210-647-4983

San Antonio Coalition For Life
BE GENEROUS! Do not forget to bring items to
put into the ―Welcome‖ bags for the September
Nun‘s Appreciation-scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2009. Ladies are meeting during the
general meeting to work on the baskets. Items that
are needed are cups (non-logo), pens, pencils, note
cards, lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. There are
about 250 bags needed to be prepared. Also welcome are bingo gifts and door prizes. Save those
cards for September . This is a big event for the
council so please be generous.
The third annual 40 Days For Life will be held Sep.
23rd through Nov. 1, 2009. There are plans to have
two locations for prayer vigils. One will the Planned
Parenthood location at Babcock and Fredericksburg
Rd. which will be staffed 24/7. The other location the
Reproductive Services site located at Evers Rd. and
Joyner which will be staffed from 8:00 AM to 8:oo
PM. Individual volunteers are needed to step up and
support this effort. The Knight of Council 4140 are
being asked to staff an overnight vigil at the Babcock
location. To sign up contact Amy Voorhees at
[email protected] Questions can be addressed to her.
Knights from 4140 who have not earned their ACE
Wings can use these dates to do so. Staff five different days for at least one hour and you will earn your
wings. These prayer vigils work and it is even more
important today to stop abortions. Our inaction will
only keep abortions going. Prayer works so lets all
take our Rosaries and staff the sites.
Chairperson‘s For the Nun‘s Appreciation are:
Luciano and Diane Dominquez
210-647-4983
Questions or inquiries can be to them, Laura
Boone, or the Grand Knight
Your full support is appreciated.

Financial Secretaries Report
Brothers
I have tried to get delinquent members to
send in their dues and pay only the current years
dues. This was and is an attempt to get them to still
be Knights and hopefully do one activity for the
year. Since it had not worked, I am begging you to
send in your dues for THIS YEAR.
Remember, all they need to do is pay the
$27.00 for this year and you will be considered a
paid up member in good standing. The next step if
for the Retention Committee to contact you and then
the next will be Intend to Suspend and then finally
SUSPENSION as a Knight. If you have any problems with the payment of your dues please contact
the Grand Knight or Financial Secretary about your
situation. REMEMBER, only the Grand Knight and
I will ever know.
Finally, if you have a change in your Address, Phone numbers, or EMAIL address please let
me know so that all the files can be updated. Communications are the key in keeping our members informed.
Kenneth T. Boone
Financial Secretary 4140
Financial Secretary Training
Financial Secretary Training School will be
held on Saturday September 26th at Council
4315, Our Lady of Fatima from 8:00 AM until
12:00 PM. Anyone who wishes to consider taking over the financial secretary office when
Brother Ken Boone finishes his third year next
June is encouraged to attend. This position is a
Supreme Office position and is probably the
most important position in a council. Grand
Knights are encouraged to attend so anyone
considering running for Grand Knight next
year should also attend. Anyone wishing to be
financial secretary must have an updated computer system as all reports are done on-line.
Financial secretaries also cannot hold an insurance license.
Knight of the Month
C
ouncil 4140 is proud to announce Eloy Arguello as our
Knight of the Month for the month of
August. Eloy is a newly elected
treasurer for the Home Association
and can be seen on a regular basis at
the hall during the week updating the
Columbus Club and Bar transactions.
When Brother Maurice Trial announced that he was wishing to retire from the
Home Assoociation Treasurer‘s position, Brother
Eloy graciously volunteered to take over. Managing
the Columbus Club finances and preparing reports is
a tedious task but a most important one. Following
Brother Maurice is big shoes to fill but Brother Eloy
has already stepped up to the plate very well.
Brother Eloy helps tend the bar for various functions
and is always quick to volunteer for other events.
Brother Eloy brings another level of leadership and
expertise to the Columbus Club . Congratulations
Eloy on being 4140‘s Knight of the Month
Family of the Month
.Our Family of the Month for the
month of August are Brother
Rudy Escamilla and his wife,
Amy. Brother Rudy and Amy are
active members of St. Gregory the
Great Catholic Church. Besides
being a Past Grand Knight,
Brother Rudy has been the Sick and
Condolence Committee Chairman
for Council 4140. Rudy does a fantastic job in keeping the council informed on the well-being of sick
council members and their family and presides with
the Grand Knight at Rosaries for deceased members.,
providing condolence certificates to the families.
Brother Rudy is Chapter Director of Religious Activities and along with Mike Nishimuta was recognized
by the chapter for coordinating the Bishop‘s Conference held here in San Antonio. Brother Rudy is also
State Vocations and Seminarian Support Chairman.
At the State convention in Houston, he and Amy
could be seen helping co-ordinate the Masses being
held. Council 4140 is proud to recognize Rudy and
Amy Escamilla as our August Family of the Month.
Congratulations Rudy and Amy.
