I take great pride in all that Zoo New England has accomplished this year, and
you certainly should too.
While I’ve seen many successes in my 26 years at Zoo New England, I have never seen a year with as much success as
we’ve had during our 2008 Fiscal Year – and it was your support, and that of the growing community of people who share
your commitment to Zoo New England, that made it all possible.
In FY08 we opened the spectacular black bear exhibit at Stone Zoo, made dramatic aesthetic improvements to Franklin
Park Zoo through our “Facelift Fund” initiative and completed the year with a record attendance of more than 524,000
visitors and more than 12,000 active member households.
But it was what these accomplishments enabled us to do that really made this past year an unprecedented success.
In FY08, we connected thousands of young people to the natural world through our award-winning education and youth
development programs. Zoo New England’s conservation program – supported by 25 cents from each paid Zoo admission and $5 from each membership – provided leadership and funding to innovative initiatives that are protecting wildlife
and habitats locally, nationally and internationally.
In addition to their direct impact, these efforts have enabled us to educate all of our visitors – schoolchildren and teachers,
parents and grandparents, our neighbors throughout the Commonwealth and tourists from around the globe – about
wildlife, and to demonstrate tangible ways that each and every person can have a positive impact in the worldwide effort to
protect our environment.
Our success in FY08 was also a big step forward in our long-term effort to transform our Zoos and dramatically expand
our programs in the coming years. Our Strategic Master Plan, which will be completed this year, will provide the blueprint
for this growth, and together we will provide the leadership, support and effort to make it a reality.
Thank you for your commitment to the unique, invaluable resources that Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo are for all of
us – as well as your recognition of the critical role that our Zoos play in educating and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow.

EXPANDING OUR REACH
Our Zoos play a unique role in connecting people to the
natural world. We’re the only place in Boston where you can
hear the roar of a lion or stand inches away from a gorilla troop
in our state-of-the-art indoor gorilla exhibit. Our mission is
to inspire people to protect and sustain the natural world for
future generations by creating fun and engaging experiences
that integrate wildlife and conservation programs, research and
education.
Whether it’s a family outing or a school field trip, our
Zoos provide a welcoming environment where people of all
ages can enjoy themselves and learn about the incredible animals that we share our planet with. In FY08, we again had
record attendance with more than 524,000 visitors enjoying
all that our Zoos have to offer. With our master plan nearing
completion, we are working hard to realize our vision for the
future of these Zoos and are committed to building worldclass institutions for you and your family to enjoy for generations to come.
FACELIFT FUND
Every element of the Zoo visit, from the way a guest is
greeted to the look of the grounds is part of the visitor experience. This past season, Zoo New England dedicated itself to
making a positive first impression through many new aesthetic
improvements at Franklin Park Zoo which included thousands
of new plantings, new paving, a new cover for Butterfly Landing, new trash containers, new benches as well as many other
enhancements.
The goal of the Facelift Fund was to raise $250,000 to
support these projects as well as additional support for
Franklin Park Zoo’s operating expenses.
The Facelift Fund improvements focused on the Zoo’s
central corridor – from the Zebra entrance to just past the gift
shop. The scope of work included paving the main greeting at
Franklin Park Zoo, rebuilding the berms to separate the public
walkway from the Giraffe Savannah, repairing and making improvements for storm water run-off, mulching and getting
thousands of new plants into the ground.
The new wattled crane exhibit located between Serengeti
Crossing and the Giraffe Savannah is also part of the Facelift
Fund. Although ZNE has had wattled cranes in its collection
for 15 years, the public has not had the opportunity to see
them. With the opening of the new wattled crane exhibit last
May, visitors can now see these birds up close and hopefully
gain an appreciation for them and other crane species. There
are 59 wattled cranes in captivity in North America, and
Franklin Park Zoo exhibits two – a male and female.
BLACK BEAR EXHIBIT
On Memorial Day weekend, Stone Zoo’s newest residents made their exhibit debut. As Smoky and Bubba – twoyear-old black bears – explored their new space, visitors
crowded the exhibit’s glass front to excitedly watch.
Both bears were orphaned as cubs in the state of Georgia
in 2006. Soon after being transferred to Appalachian Bear
Rescue in Tennessee, it was determined that the bears could
not be rehabilitated for release back into the wild. If a suitable
home had not been found, the two bears would have been
euthanized. Fortunately, Zoo New England was able to provide a home for Smoky and Bubba.
The new $850,000 exhibit is located on the same site that
was previously home to Stone Zoo’s beloved polar bear,
Major, who passed away in 2000. ZNE built a naturalistic
habitat for the black bears – using the foundation of Major’s
former home, filling in the moat and creating an engaging and
stimulating space for these animals. The new exhibit is located
in Yukon Creek – an area of the Zoo highlighting North
American animals including bald eagles, Canada lynx, gray fox
and porcupine.
The new space features a central water feature, a tree for
climbing, rocks, multiple built-in enrichment opportunities,
as well as an on-exhibit training area. Similar to the indoor gorilla exhibit at Franklin Park Zoo, the public can stand face-toface with the bears through the exhibit’s glass fronts.
ZNE’s Stone Zoo is entering a period of dramatic growth
– one that will build on this beloved institution’s rich history,
while transforming this local gem into a leading example of
what a modern zoo can, and should, be. Stone Zoo is taking
a big step forward toward reaching this goal with the new
black bear exhibit.

ZOOS THAT EDUCATE
INSPIRING TOMORROW’S LEADERS
Each year, our Zoos welcome thousands of schoolchildren through our gates. Whether learning about a butterfly’s
life cycle in Butterfly Landing, studying our giraffe family on
the Giraffe Savannah or laughing as our river otters, Darrah
and Chelsea, splash and frolic in their exhibit, students are able
to connect with nature and wildlife in a way that truly brings
classroom learning to life.
Throughout the school year, our Zoos offer free admission to all Massachusetts schoolchildren. By providing opportunities to underserved schoolchildren who may not otherwise
be able to visit our Zoos, we are able to share the wonders of
wildlife and extend our reach by bringing fun and effective
educational programming to all members of our community.
In FY08, our Education department conducted 357
formal school programs – 187 at the Zoos and 170 in the
schools, serving 8,729 students. Additionally, our educators
reached an audience of 122,000, 16 percent more than in
FY07, in an impressive range of formal and informal
educational programming.
Educational programming is not limited to children. Our
educators also work with teachers through our teacher training workshops to not only enhance their skills, but to also
maximize the use of the Zoos to facilitate learning, participate
in activities that can be replicated in their classroom and

develop more effective methods for teaching science and other
disciplines. In FY08, ZNE’s Education department conducted
20 teacher training workshops and served 111 teachers.
BROADENING HORIZONS
Zoo New England’s nationally-recognized ZooTeen program will reach a milestone next year when it celebrates a
decade of creating opportunities and nurturing the development of our future leaders. Since its inception in 1999, more
than 800 Boston youths have gained invaluable hands-on
work experience through the ZooTeen program.
Many of our youth program participants are entering the
workplace for the first time. By enriching the program with a
structured professional development component, we prepare
teens both for employment here at the Zoo, as well as in their
future endeavors. The teens not only work in a wide range of
Zoo departments, they also forge lasting relationships as well
as build their resumes and hone interview and other workplace
skills.
Other ZNE youth initiatives
include the Jr. ZooTeen, Teen Ambassador and Youth Education Specialists
(Y.E.S.) programs, all of which provide
unique experiences for highly-motivated young people. In addition, the
pilot EcoTeen initiative, which just
completed its third year, is an afterschool program designed to provide
students with environmental education
opportunities and training so they can
become effective, lifelong stewards of
our environment.

Dr. Baitchman has made several trips to the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center in Panama
to assist the biologists and volunteers in this vital conservation effort by helping to establish
medical protocols to ensure the health of the center’s captive population.

EXPANDING OUR REACH
Just by being a member or visiting our Zoos, you are
making a direct contribution to conservation efforts both locally and globally. Conservation is central to Zoo New England’s mission, and in April 2007 the organization made a
huge commitment to conservation by designating 25 cents of
each admission and $5 of every membership to support the
Zoos’ conservation initiatives. In FY08, ZNE raised $114,200
for the conservation program. By creating this program, ZNE
not only hoped to dramatically expand its conservation reach,
but also to connect people in a tangible way to these important conservation initiatives.
Whether helping to save frogs in Panama from imminent
extinction to providing post-earthquake relief for pandas in
China to helping to boost the local populations of Blanding’s
turtles, every person who visits our Zoos or becomes a
member is contributing a wide range of effective conservation
efforts.
Through the conservation fund, the Zoos are able to
extend their reach like never before.
Earlier this year, ZNE furthered its commitment to
amphibian conservation by donating $25,000 to purchase a
large shipping container that will be outfitted
and used as a “Noah’s Ark” for the
Summit Panama Amphibian Research
and Conservation Center located at
the Summit Municipal Parque, a
zoological and botanical garden
in Panama City, Republic of
Panama. ZNE and the
Houston Zoo have committed financial and logistical
support for the construction
of an amphibian conservation
center focusing on rescue, treatment, captive breeding, research,
and education programs developed
to safeguard threatened amphibian
species. ZNE and the Houston Zoo are
working collaboratively with the Summit
Municipal Parque to establish and advance the new center.
Closer to home, ZNE contributed more than $4,000 to
support the Blanding’s turtle research and monitoring project
centered in the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in
Concord, Mass. Although this area contains one of New England’s largest populations of Blanding’s turtles, a threatened
species, it is estimated that this population has dramatically
decreased since the 1970s. In the fall of 2007, ZNE took in
11 tiny turtles to “head start” through the winter. By the time
they were released back into the wild in June 2008, they had
tripled in size which made them less prone to predation.
Through the head start program, ZNE hopes to boost the
numbers of the local population. Since 1991, ZNE has participated in a similar program to great success with Northern
red-bellied cooters.
Projects funded by ZNE’s conservation program are selected by an internal committee which reviews each proposal.
This committee is also working to develop a larger, more inclusive committee structure, comprised of a cross section of
Zoo staff, that will work effectively and efficiently to invest in
projects within an established framework.

has also contributed $1,000 to support
the Fourth International Tapir
Symposium, $5,522 to support
an environmental education initiative with the Gunung
Palung Orangutan Project in
Indonesia, $1,000 to support
AZA’s Conservation Endowment Fund, $2,000 to support the Bushmeat Crisis Task
Force, as well as a host of other
meaningful projects.

Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his memory in 2006. The fund
was established by Zoo New England with the generous financial support and
volunteer leadership from the Gilmour family. Award winners are employees
of ZNE who have been employed by the Zoo for at least one year.
On May 10, the First Annual Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Bike Ride
was held in Hollis, N.H. More than 140 people biked along one of three routes
and raised more than $30,000 for the scholarship fund. Plans are already
underway for next year’s ride to be held on May 9, 2009.

S. Russell Sylva Fund
The S. Russell Sylva Fund was established by former zookeepers and administrative staff to honor Russ Sylva, who led the Boston Zoological Society from
the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. Contributions to the Fund will help to realize
Russ' vision of providing optimal care for the Zoos' animals and maximizing
the Zoos' educational value for Massachusetts schoolchildren and for all
