Message from our Executive Director:
When summer comes, have some fun! That is exactly
what we plan to do in the upcoming months. Of
course, we will always continue to work on goals and
objectives that enhance independent living
opportunities, as well as promote self-determination.
Why not have fun in the process. With the warmer
weather, Kaleidoscope will offer many activities and
programs to ensure full and stimulating lives. I
recently noticed that, just in PA, we hosted over 30
events in May. Join us in June and have some fun! We
are DEDICATED – our June Vision Statement - to
bringing you an amazing summer!
All my best,
Dr. TaraColleen Macatee

CONSUMER SPOTLIGHT
Meet Trevor from Bryn Mawr, PA. Trevor is a regular member of our peer support group and
was just recently promoted to be one of our peer-mentors. It was a natural choice, as Trevor
always asks the most intuitive questions and fosters group participation. Even though Trevor
lives right in the neighborhood, he actually grew up in Kentucky. Here is his interview:

T) I work at the Radwyn Apartments in maintenance where I clean the building and hallways.

Q: How do you feel that your job makes your life better?
(T) It gives me a chance to interact with people in different settings. I have a boss named Sue
and she loves my great memory.
(Q) Tell us about your living situation.
(T) I live independently in an apartment managed by JCHAI (Judith Creed Homes for Adult
Independence). I make my own breakfast and lunch, but have dinner in a common apartment
with my group. I am responsible for my own cleaning and laundry.
(Q) What are your greatest challenges about your living situation?
(T) I would like to socialize more with people that are not in my group, which is why I like
Kaleidoscope activities.
(Q) Do you have future goals in regards to your living situation?
(T) I would like to someday live without supervision.
(Q) What are some of your hobbies?
(T) I love TV; “Once Upon A Time” is my favorite show. I like jigsaw puzzles, reading
books – I can read several at one time, and especially, hanging out with my family.

Praise for Kaleidoscope
Lots of Controversy with ADA
Have you noticed the recent onslaught of complaints
and lawsuits against companies that allegedly or
admittedly violated the rights of individuals with
disabilities? On May 9, 2016, a judge ruled that the
Franklin Institute violated the Americans with
Disabilities Act several times when it required a direct
care worker to pay for his admittance. Just a few
months ago, Dorney Park was accused of keeping a
summer job from someone based on their disability.
Also in May, Lowe’s was charged with violating the
ADA when the company terminated individuals who,
based on their disability, took medical leaves of
absences longer than the company’s maximum leave
policy. This seems to be just the tip of the iceberg as
individuals with disabilities, their families and
caregivers are being encouraged to promote selfadvocacy and determination.
It is not our intention to focus on the negative, nor
bash any of the mentioned companies, as we all know
there are many sides to a story. Our point is that this is
seemingly a hot topic in our industry of late and it
could affect service providers, the disability
community and applicable families. As a provider
agency whose mission is to help those with disabilities
in every aspect of their lives, we will continue to
monitor related industry news so we can keep you
abreast of any pertinent developments.
We wanted to share this message from a
grateful parent:
“We are so happy to have Melissa
coming here! Simon looks forward to
her visits. She is a huge help to me so I'm
able to work a few extra hours and get
other things accomplished. We have no
concerns, just praise for the way
Kaleidoscope provides this blessing to
our family.”
