1. artisan – a person who settled in all regions of the colonies who worked as a craftsman
2. Boston – a city in Massachusetts located on a large harbor where the fishing industry was successful
3. indentured servant – a person who worked for a period of time to work off a debt until they were free and able
to start a life of their own
4. large landowners – a wealthy person who owned a large plantation in the southern colonies who was often
educated and had a rich social life
5. Mid-Atlantic Colonies – a region that is located on a coastal plain and warm, humid climate
6. New England Colonies – a region with hills, rocky terrain, and cold winters
7. New York City – a popular trade city in New York that grew to be the largest city in America
8. opportunity cost – something that is given up in exchange for something better
9. Philadelphia – a city located in Pennsylvania along the Delaware River that was an economic center for trade
10. slave – a person who was owned by another person and had to work without pay
11. Southern Colonies – a region with rich farmland and a moderate climate
12. specialization – when a worker learns a trade and becomes very good at it so they can sell goods and services
associated with their job
13. trade – to barter; to exchange goods or services without currency
14. voluntary exchange – buyers and sellers exchanging freely, all involved are better off after the exchange occurs
15. plantation – a large farm on which crops are raised by workers (slaves and indentured servants) who live on the
farm
