Florida Map Projects

Dear Parents and Students,
We have been discussing maps and Florida’s geography in class. As a home learning
extension, each student will complete A Florida Map Project or Broucher, which will be due
Thursday October 15th. I have included several photos of examples other student projects
from different counties. I am enclosing the instructions/directions of the project as well as
the rubric. Please read carefully the information below:
Materials and Ingredients






4 cups of salt
2 cups of flour
2 cups of water
1 cardboard or box
Pencil and markers
Paint and brushes
Instructions/Directions
1. Draw an outline of Florida on the cardboard or box. (Copy of Florida map is
provided)
2. Using a library book, atlas, or your S.S. ISN carefully study the illustrations , and
plan your design.
3. To make the FIRST layer of dough map, mix 2 cups of salt and 1 cup of flour in a
bowl.
4. Slowly add 1 cup of water to the flour mixture and then stir until completely mixed
together. The mixture should look like thick icing after you mix it. You must use
the mixture right away!
5. Spread the first layer of the dough mixture INSIDE the outlined map. Try to smooth
it out as much as possible. Let it dry 1-2 days.
6. Once the first layer is dry, you will REPEAT steps 3-5 above. Place the SECOND
layer of dough on top of the first layer. Mold and shape it to create each area,
different landforms and don’t forget our most important lake. Let it dry 2-3 days.
You must allow each layer to dry out completely to prevent cracking.
7. Once your dough map has completely dried, paint the map to identify the landforms
and major bodies of water. The more detailed your map, the better your grade will
be.
8. When bringing your map back to school please be careful not to bend the cardboard
or box, because it might cause the map image to split or crack.
9. Be prepared to present your map to the class. This means you must not only design
your map but, you must be able to EXPLAIN what you did and answer questions
about what you included in your design.
10. Finally and above all, remember to have FUN completing this project. It’s a great
opportunity for you to learn and create something that is unique. BE CREATIVE!!!
Your grade will be reflected and graded as follows:
