Head’s Introduction
Year 11 Rewards
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a little quieter than usual in school
with Year 10 completing their first week of Work
Experience. Speaking to Mrs Adamson, who
organises the placements, it’s really good to hear
the positive starts that Year 10 have made.
I’m delighted to say that Tang Hall Primary
School has, on 1 May, joined Hempland,
Heworth, Badger Hill and St Lawrence’s primaries in the Pathfinder
MAT. This group will grow again in June when Clifton with Rawcliffe
join the MAT and again, in September, when New Earswick come on
board. I think it is important to reassure parents that the structures at
Archbishop Holgate’s School will not change and that I will continue
to lead the school as I have for the past seven years. The appointment
of Mr Outram (current Head of Hempland), as Director of Primary
Education, will provide the necessary leadership capacity to support
primary colleagues.

Food for Thought
This week during Collective Worship form groups have been
thinking about ‘planting seeds’ for the future. One of the quotes
we have spent some time thinking about is:

News from the Music department
Work Skills Trip to Dalby Forest
Well done to all our students in both the Junior and Senior Soul Bands
who performed at the Opening Ceremony celebrations for the new
building at Lord Deramore’s Primary School just before the Easter
holidays. All students were incredibly professional and they received
some really positive feedback about their performances.
On Friday 28 April, the Year 10 and Year 13 Work Skills group spent
a brilliant day at Dalby Forest. The trip was organised by the Year 10
group as part of their ‘Working in a Team’ Unit for their BTEC Work
Skills Qualification. Despite some challenges in planning the trip, the
day went extremely smoothly and everyone had a great day which
involved a short walk, stone
skimming, a picnic, rounders,
football, cricket and the
adventure playground. Every
student was an absolute
credit to themselves and
the school, the Work Skills
teachers and staff were
extremely proud of them.
Well done everyone!
Congratulations to Senior, Junior and Chamber Choir members who
performed at the Abaana Concert last Wednesday.
A special mention and many congratulations also go to Rosella Pinckney,
Josh Carr, Jamie Duffill and Adam Peters who have recently passed their
graded instrumental exams with flying colours.
A date for your diaries - On Tuesday 23 May (the last Tuesday before half
term) we will be holding our Summer Concert. This will be a celebration
of all the extra-curricular music provision that has been taking place
throughout the year and in a relaxed, cabaret style evening with
refreshments available and a raffle. Entry is £1 for students/children and
£2 for adults. We look forward to seeing you there.
Congratulations also to Issy Cambridge, 11Dn, who
recently passed two music exams: Grade 5 cello with
Merit and Grade 7 piano.
Apprenticeship Information Evening
The evening is open to Year 10-13 students and
parents with talks from Nestle, Network Rail, Royal
Navy, Army, Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and
EY. The event is on Tuesday 9 May, 6-8pm, at St
Peter’s School. Places are limited, please contact
01904 527300 to register.
Ramadan
We ask that parents please notify school if their child will be
observing Ramadan. Thank you.
Book Sale
We are lucky enough to be able to sell a selection of books on behalf
of the ‘Red House Book Awards’. The books have been used as
testers in schools for students to review and vote for their favourite.
Most have been read or part-read only once and are in almost new
condition. The books, if new, would cost between £6.99-£12.99, but
we are being charged only £1 per book. The sale will be held on
Friday 12 May at lunchtime in the Library, please remind your child
to bring a pound!

Year 12 BTEC Controlled Tasks
Year 12 Business and IT students have had a great start to the exam
season by completing some very important controlled assessments
that contribute to their overall grade next year. They worked
extremely hard and should be proud of their efforts. Good luck
for the final day of IT on Monday and, for our Year 12 Engineering
students ,Tuesday to Friday next week.
Year 12 Work Experience
Our Year 12 students go on Work Experience for the last week of the
Summer term, w/c Monday 17 July. This is an exciting opportunity for
students to gain experience in industry, make valuable contacts for
future experience, be it voluntary or employed, and it is also the last
opportunity for our students to gain a taste of the career areas they
are interested in pursuing before UCAS applications or applications
to apprenticeships/full-time employment.
Punctuality
Punctuality is key during this Summer examination period and
it delays the start of assessments when students arrive late or
we have to check and find their whereabouts. Please continue
to support us in encouraging punctual attendance, especially
through this very important period in school. Thank you.
Work Skills Induction Day
We were excited to welcome next year’s Work Skills students on
their Induction Day tomorrow. Fresh faces remind us all of the
exciting new start we have fast approaching. We hope they will
have a thoroughly enjoyable day and spend valuable time with
the Work Skills team. We look forward to welcoming them full
time with us in September.

Exam Season - Top Tips for Year 11
In the run up to exam season, our Year 12 students will be using this space to show support and give advice to current Year 11 students who are
starting their exams very soon…
Harriett says: During my GCSEs, I worried about the outcome of the exams and getting all of my revision
completed. To overcome this, I created a revision timetable, which I found to be an extremely useful tool
as it ensured I knew what I needed to do and that I got everything done. My worry about the outcome of
the exams was overcome by trying to have confidence in myself and believing that I could do the exam
and wasn’t going to fail, as long as I prepared well! This helped a lot, as if you believe that you’re going to
fail and get yourself into that mind set, then you are far more likely to do poorly, whereas if you plan and
prepare, you feel in control and will give yourself a better chance of success!
One of my revision strategies, which may not work for everyone, was to write notes and then learn them off by heart. I
found this the easiest way to revise as it ensured that I knew everything that I needed to which also helped to reduce
stress. Another revision strategy I used was to complete past papers. This is useful because if you know what previous
questions and their mark schemes look like, then you can learn what the exam board is looking for in your answer,
meaning that you can ensure you get top marks in your questions.
My top tip would be not to let stress get the better of you. I suffered a lot from stress and found that if you are feeling stressed, then you should
take a break, as trying to revise whilst stressed leads to nothing productive.
PLEASE SHARE: If you would like to share students’ achievements in the community with us, then please email jsissons@

Visit of the Abaana New Life Choir
Last week our school community was
delighted to be able to welcome the
Abaana New Life Choir to spend some
time with us. Their visit proved to be an
excellent start to the new term and a
highlight of the year for many people
at Archbishop Holgate’s. Abaana is a
Christian based charity which invests
in Children in Africa, helping them to
break the chains of poverty, through
education. Most of their projects are
in Uganda, working in 13 locations
supporting children and parents in those
communities. They have been able to
build 13 schools, support churches and
sponsor over 1,300 children as well as
working with children on the streets and
other projects. Abaana has raised over
£1,000,000 to help build schools, medical
projects, water pumps and support many For the last few months 20 children and
children in need.
their chaperones have been touring
Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The purpose of this has been to raise
funds for the ongoing work of Abaana;
especially in terms of education and
work with orphaned street children.
The tour has also had the added benefit
of raising awareness about their work
too. Archbishop Holgate’s was the only
concert and host venue in York and one

afternoon and then went home with
school staff, who along with their families
hosted them for the next two nights. This
was a really enriching experience for all
involved and has led many of them to
decide to become sponsors for the future
education of some of the individual
children. The following day the children
had a busy and varied programme in
school.

lessons. This involved baking chocolate
muffins and making wooden toys. In both
cases they were ably assisted by our Sixth

the children performed two energetic
concerts for Years 7 and 8. Our students
were amazed at the Ugandan children’s
energy and skill and were shocked to
learn from the video presentation about
the difficult backgrounds they had come
from. During lunchtime the Student
Leaders were again excellent hosts;
playing games on the school field. The After a short sleep and an evening meal

comprised of several hundred pupils,
parents and friends of the school. We
were also delighted to welcome the Lord
Mayor and Lady Mayoress to the event
as well. The evening started with two
musical pieces by our own school choirs,
followed by a truly uplifting concert
filled with beautiful singing, energetic
dancing and very moving videos which
spoke about the life-changing impact
of Abaana’s work. Richard Nihill, School
Chaplain said: “It has been a privilege to
work closely with the New Life Choir and
organise their programme. Welcoming
them into our community has had an
enriching effect on all the students and
staff who have encountered them in
a variety of ways. Abaana’s vision of
Justice and Compassion for the children
of Uganda sits very well with our own
school values.”Dr Pugh, one of our school
governors said: “It was a very moving
experience that has had a lasting effect
on both my family and myself. I was really
taken by the strength of their faith in God
and their firm belief that He would provide
for them, and the way that Abaana live
out the Gospel in their daily work.”
