Meckstroth, Rodwell win Blue Ribbon Pairs
Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell started the final
day of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 13th place,
but put together two solid sessions to win the event
for the third time as partners by 47.27 matchpoints on
a top of 38. The win seals the 2016 Player of the Year

Gatlinburg tournament chair:
The show will go on
Amid the destruction and misery of the
devastating fires in and around Gatlinburg TN, the
chairman of one of ACBL’s most popular regionals
said on Thursday that he is 99% confident that the
tournament will go on in April as planned.
“I’m certain,” said Pete Misslin, “that come
April, if things are not back to normal, it will be
close enough that there will be no impact on the
tournament.”
Misslin also assured players who are interested
in attending the regional that there will be
accommodations for all comers. “We will be able
to find places for people to stay even if some of the
hotels are not available.”
The wildfires, burning in the Southeast for about
two weeks, began to approach Gatlinburg and Smoky
Mountain National Park on Monday. As of Thursday,
the city was still under an evacuation notice with
about 300 buildings damaged. Another 700 structures
were damaged in the surrounding area. The national
park is closed indefinitely. The cause of the wildfires
is still under investigation.
Winners of the 0-5000 Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs:
Radu Nistor and Joan Brody.
Mini-Blue champs:
Nistor and Brody
Radu Nistor and Joan Brody narrowly captured
the title in yesterday’s final of the 0-5000 Mini-Blue
Ribbon Pairs, outpacing runners-up Michael Schrage
and Edward Rauch by 3.5 matchpoints on a 25 top.
Nistor of Sunnyside NY and Brody of Livingston
NJ qualified fourth in Wednesday’s opening round
and then combined a 54% in the first final session
with a 61% in the second final to secure the win.
This is the first limited NABC title for Brody.
Nistor previously won the Lebhar IMP Pairs in 2014
and the 0-10,000 Swiss Teams earlier this year.
The runners-up – Schrage, of Chestnut Hill
MA, and Rauch, of Fort Lauderdale – were a pickup
partnership.
Lowes lead
Senior Mixed
JoAnne Lowe and Leon Lowe of Fountain Hills
AZ set the pace in the qualifying round of the Senior
Mixed Pairs. The Lowes will have an 11-matchpoint
carryover advantage versus runners-up Ellie Hanlon
of Tequesta FL and Bill Irvine of Delray Beach FL.
Today’s two-session final will have 52 tables.
Hoyos-Bernal lead
10K Fast Pairs
Carlos Hoyos of Bogota, Colombia, and
Francisco Bernal of Miami topped the qualifying
round of the 0-10,000 Fast Pairs. They will begin
today’s two-session final with a lead of 6.78
matchpoints over Regena Edwards of Laurel MD and
Linda Dunn of Memphis TN.
Thirty-six pairs qualified for today’s two-session
final.
A photo from downtown Gatlinburg fires
News reports put the death toll from the
disaster at 10 as of Thursday. There have been no
identifications of those who died in the fires.
Rain on Wednesday morning provided some relief
for those battling the remaining wildfires, according
to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.
All fires have been extinguished in Gatlinburg though
some are still smoldering.
Misslin said most of downtown Gatlinburg was

Appealing a ruling
Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a
director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with
the director who delivered the original ruling. The
table director will fill out paperwork regarding the
appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong
with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be
handled by a variety of means. When the appeals
reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of
that particular case will determine whether the case
can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of
misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a
panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing
which could include bridge experts.

By the skin of our teeth
By Barry Rigal
This analysis of this board is repeated today
because the deal was inaccurately displayed in the
Thursday edition.
When you qualify for the second day of the
Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs by 17 matchpoints out of
1000, every little bit helps. With three deals to go,
we were on the outside looking in, but my partner,
Glenn Milgrim, came through in the clutch. We were
playing against Zia Mahmood and Dennis Bilde.

Zia found the best defense to 4♠: ♥A, ♥K, ♥J,
Bilde pitching his ♦10 as Glenn ruffed in dummy.
When Glenn led the ♠Q, it held (Bilde would have
done better to cover). Glenn changed tack at that
point. He finessed in clubs, ruffed a club, then played
three more rounds of spades to throw Bilde in for
the forced club play. The diamonds in dummy took
care of the rest. That was plus 620 and 59 out of 64
matchpoints, but Glenn was subsequently kicking
himself for not taking the club finesse before playing
spades. Now the defense has no counter.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS
Do’s and Don’ts to help
your game – Part 8
By Brent Manley
DO
Read books on
card play, defense
and bidding.
When I learned
about bridge in the
summer of 1970,
I went to a book
store and bought
Alfred Sheinwold’s
“5 Weeks to
Winning Bridge.”
The next purchase
was Louis Watson’s classic, “The Play of the Hand
at Bridge.” I read and reread that book and learned
a lot from it before I even knew there was such a
thing as duplicate. I discovered how little I knew
about bidding when I was introduced to duplicate in
1975.
The book that helped me the most in bidding
was “Judgment at Bridge,” a classic by Mike
Lawrence. His other classic, “How to Read Your
Opponents’ Cards,” helped me improve my declarer
play by leaps and bounds. Eddie Kantar’s books
on declarer play were also instrumental in my
improvement.
What was most beneficial to me was reading
about different situations that come up at the table
all the time. Here’s an example. You are in 6♠. Your
left-hand opponent leads the ♥K. How would you
play on the following layout?
♠ A J 10 8 3
♥75
♦ K 10 9

Partner opens 1♦ and rebids 1NT after your 1♠
response. Not expecting to be facing a singleton
spade, you leap to 4♠, ending the bidding. West
leads the ♣3. East wins the ace and returns the ♣J
to your king, West following with the 6. When you
lead a spade to dummy’s ace, West plays the jack.
Can you see any way out of this? Plan the play.
Solution
Ever hear of miracles? That is what you need
here. The first miracle takes place when West
follows with a spade honor. You hope West has the
♠Q J or ♠K J doubleton.
The second miracle you need is for hearts to
be 3-3. If they are, you can play four rounds of
low heart. Whoever wins the trick will have to play
a diamond, solving that problem for you, or some
other suit, allowing you to ruff in one hand and
discard a diamond from the other. If you had read
about this situation before seeing it at the table, you
would be prepared.
DON’T
Play too fast as declarer at trick one. No matter
whether you are in a part score, game or slam, make
it a habit to play deliberately at trick one. Many
experts will tell you that more contracts are lost at
trick one than at any other point in the play.
Start by counting your losers if you are playing
a suit contract. If you’re in notrump, count your
winners. When you can win the trick in either hand,
think about whether it matters.
Decide whether you should pull trumps right
away or save some for ruffs in dummy. If an
opponent’s ace in a side suit must be with one
opponent or the other to give you a chance at your
contract, mentally place that card favorably and plan
accordingly.
For example, suppose you are in 4♥ and have
already lost two tricks. You hold two low spades
opposite three to the king, so the ♠A must be on
your left. On top of that, you must decide which
opponent has the ♣Q, and you can finesse either
way for that card. If your left-hand opponent is a
passed hand and has already shown up with 6 HCP,
not counting the ♠A, you should play your RHO for
the ♣Q. If LHO had that card, it would give him 12
HCP and he would have opened the bidding.
I know that a lot of new players are more
interested in bidding – especially regarding
conventions – but bridge is a game of tricks, and if
you don’t know the right approach to taking them,
all the conventions in the world will not improve
your results.
hearts, discarding your ♣10. Whichever defender
ruffs costs the defense a trump trick. If the hand with
honor third ruffs, the two remaining spade honors
will crash the next time a trump is led. If the hand
with the two honors ruffs, all you lose is two spades
and the club ace.
You can even do a little better. After crossing
to the ♠A, whether or not an honor falls, lead a low
diamond. If East has the ace without the queen, he
may think you have the stiff queen and go up with the
ace. If he does, ruff, cross to a heart and pitch your
losing club on the ♦K, losing two spades and a club,
thank you very much. Finally, if nothing wonderful
happens in diamonds, you are still alive if hearts are
3-3. The full deal:

In the final analysis, it never hurts to give an
opponent a chance to go wrong. It is often the best
percentage play! Top players make this an art form.
Given this layout, the contract cannot be made
against best defense.
P.S Do not expect to be a winning player if you
always get “best defense.” Had hearts been 3-3,
you would have made the contract. A little realism
is needed here, however. Every contract doesn’t
make!

You receive the lead of a low diamond. Plan the
play. What is the safety play in clubs?
Did you come up with counting the 4-1 club
breaks, West holding the singleton, and decide
running the ♣10 was best? That is true, although
it would not be the case if the ♣4 and ♣6 were
interchanged. Be that as it may, you have a chance to
recover if you start by cashing the ♣A, then crossing
to the ♥A and running the ♣10. At the table, the ♣A
draws the 7 from West and the 5 from East. When
you cross to the ♥A the play the ♣10, East covers and
West shows out. Don’t panic. Cross to the ♥K and
ruff a heart. East follows and the suit breaks 3-3. So
you cash the ♠A and ♠K and lead a winning heart in
this ending:

As it turns out, the ♠Q drops doubleton from
East, but so long as you lead a winning heart to pitch
your spade, then ruff a spade to hand, you can return
to dummy with a diamond to the king to lead a heart
or a spade for the coup en passant against East.
Electronic Device Policy
1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs
allows players to bring electronic devices into the
playing area. Except for health-related equipment
and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the
tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and
turned off.
1.11.2 Any device capable
of either sending or receiving
electronic signals must not be
visible during the session.
1.11.3 This policy applies to
all pairs, team members, captains,
coaches, play recorders and
kibitzers with the exception of
those persons designated by the
ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual
playing session or segment of play.
1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an
automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of
Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/
board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/
knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per
match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A
second offense will result in disqualification from the
event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy
will be required to leave the playing area for the
remainder of that session.

Gatlinburg
continued from page 1
A home in the Gatlinburg area burned to the
ground
spared from direct damage by the first, but he said
there will probably be some smoke and wind damage
that requires remediation. Gatlinburg Mayor Mike
Werner said the Convention Center, where the bridge
tournament takes place every year, is in good shape
and will host a scheduled convention there next week.
Misslin said that bridge players who wish to
help in the restoration/relief effort can do so in two
ways: 1) make direct contributions through Smart
Bank (go to smartbank.com), the channel the mayor
has requested so that he can direct the funds to the
needed areas, and 2) plan to attend to the Gatlinburg
Regional, which runs from April 17 to the 23.
Misslin said he has heard from dozens of
bridge players from as far away as New York and
Texas, expressing support and offering donations.

Firefighters from Chattanooga and Murphreesboro
have traveled to Gatlinburg to help. “We have
received thoughts and prayers from across the
bridge world and we are extremely grateful for the
comments. It is heartwarming that so many people
care and are sharing their concerns.”
The Dollywood theme park in nearby Pigeon
Forge did not receive significant damage and is being
used to house emergency personnel. It will reopen
today. Country music star Dolly Parton announced
that the Dollywood Foundation is donating $1000 a
month for six months to families left homeless by the

Reisinger BAM starts today
Competition for the Reisinger Trophy (the
Chicago Trophy until 1965) starts today. The event
is a six-session open team-of-four event scored by
board-a-match with two qualifying sessions, two
semifinal sessions and
two final sessions. It was
contested as a four-session
championship until 1966.
The event is generally
thought to be the toughest
on the ACBL tournament
calendar.
The event began
in 1929 as the North
American Open Team
Championship and the prize was the Chicago Trophy,
donated by the Auction Bridge Club of Chicago. (In
1928, the open team competition was for the Harold
S. Vanderbilt Cup.)
The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 by the
Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by the Greater
New York Bridge Association in memory of Curt H.
Reisinger.
Reisinger (1891–1964), of New York City, was a
principal patron of contract bridge and the American
Contract Bridge League in the early years of both.
Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuser and
a grandson of Busch, co-founders of the brewery
from which he inherited great wealth. That wealth
enabled him to become a stalwart financial supporter
of the game, as well as a noted philanthropist on a far
larger scale.
In the years when there was often a struggle to
meet the League’s modest payroll, Reisinger was
often called upon and never failed to help with a loan
or an outright gift. His support made possible several
early contract bridge tournaments, clubs and books.
Among the positions in which he served were
director of the United States Bridge Association,
president of the Greater New York Bridge
Association and chairman of the ACBL. In 1953,
Reisinger was named ACBL Honorary Member.

North American Swiss
Team action begins today
Play begins today in the six-session Keohane
North American Swiss Teams, with semifinal matches
on Saturday and the final matches on Sunday.
Players will be vying for the Keohane Trophy,
donated by Ethel Keohane in 1973 in memory of her
husband, William H. Keohane, one of the leading
New England bridge personalities.
Bill Keohane (1896-1972) was a consulting
engineer, bridge teacher and bridge administrator. He
served as chairman of the 1970 Summer NABC in
Boston and, for many years, was chairman of the New
England Individual Championship.
Keohane was elected in 1972 to a one-year term
as the first District Director of the newly created
District 25 (New England). He died later that year,
just before he was to attend his first Board meeting.
The Keohane Trophy was presented for the Open
Individual Championship until it was re-designated in
1995 by the ACBL Board of Directors for the North
American Swiss Teams.

Elinor Borenstine and partner Gen Geiger
finished sixth in the event on Thursday named
for Elinor.
Going strong at 96
Elinor Borenstine plays a lot of bridge. The
96-year-old is a fixture at the InterCity Bridge Club
in her hometown of Sarasota FL where she is known
as a fierce competitor. She is also beloved by many
of her bridge friends, so much so that several of them
banded together to purchase a game sponsorship in
her name at the Orlando NABC. The “Friends of
Elinor Borenstine Strati-Flighted Daylight A/B/C
Pairs” was played yesterday.
Borenstine was persuaded to play in the game
named in her honor, but she set one condition: She
wanted to play with her longtime partner Gen Geiger,
also of Sarasota. The duo – sporting shirts with the
names “Elinor” and “Elinor’s Partner” emblazoned
on them – finished sixth overall.
Historical sidebar: Elinor’s father, Eddie
Jacobson went into partnership with Harry S.
Truman in 1918. Jacobson and Truman opened
a haberdashery in Kansas City MO which they
operated for a few years.

How to Work Acrostics Puzzles
The grid of the puzzle below is not a crossword;
it’s a quotation from a bridge book written by a lady
who became the first female Grand Master of the
WBF. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at
the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end
when a black square follows a group of the numbered
letters. And the unique thing about acrostic puzzles is
that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down
from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out
the name of the book’s author … followed by the title
of that book!
You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are
numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue
letter referral, which tells the solver which of the clue
answers will give you that particular letter.
Also, in this puzzle note that five of the clues
are marked with an (*). In each of those five clues,
tricky cryptic Anglo-American word play is being
used. These clues include three anagrams, a hidden
word, and one clue involving Roman numerals. This
information should help you find the correct answer
to each of the cryptics.
Working in both directions … from the clues to
the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!)
in solving acrostics. Just keep plugging away, back
and forth, and BOTH puzzles … the quote and the
clue answers … can be solved eventually.
Enjoy yourselves! Joel Hoersch

Acrostic solution from page 13
(Rixi) Markus,
“More Deadly Than the
Male”
What’s happening? If you can keep that question
always in mind, you are a long way towards
becoming a good player. Technique is useful, but I
wouldn’t give it more than ten per cent against ninety
per cent for the right type of concentration.

Stop!
Using the Stop card during the auction requests
the next bidder to pause 10 seconds after a jump
in the bidding. TD Matt Koltnow explains that
using the Stop card is optional, and that while the
procedure is included in the regulations and is not a
law, employing the Stop card helps players comply
with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to maintain
steady tempo and unvarying manner.”
The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold:
1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting
Unauthorized Information by acting too slowly or too
quickly.
2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by
looking at the auction rather than reading meanings
into fast bids and hesitations.
Players who employ the Stop card must
consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest
the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For
example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it
preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)–
3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look
at their cards before making a call.
“Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows
you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally
entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow.
Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the
benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says
that more experienced players are expected to take
time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a Stop
card is used.
Use of the bidding box —
Alerts and Announcements
When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires
that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the
same time.
When making an Announcement, use the
Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the
Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or
Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are
aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Convention card reminder
Each player is required to have a convention
card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a
session. The convention card must include the first
and last name of each member of the partnership, and
the cards must be identical.
If a director determines that neither player has
a substantially completed card, the partnership may
play only the Standard American Yellow Card and
may use only standard carding. This restriction may
be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round
after convention cards have been properly prepared
and approved by the director. Further, the partnership
will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each
board played, commencing with the next round and
continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team
Page 17
Friday, December 2, 2016
games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the
director.
If the director determines the partnership has at
least one substantially completed convention card
but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations,
the director may give warnings or assign such
penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the
circumstances.
The objective of these warnings and penalties is
the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL
regulations.
Youth and Junior entries
Coupons will be made available for junior
members in good standing for entry into events at
NABCs:
Any player under the age of 26 years who is a
full-time student (must provide proof of eligibility)
will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any
event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per
session.
Any player under the age of 21 years will be
entitled to coupons that can be used for any event.
These coupons will have a value of $10 per session.
Any player 19 years and under will be granted
free plays for each session of regionally rated events.
Players under the age of 26 years named to teams
to represent Zone 2 NBOs in world competitions for
NABCs occurring between the time they are named
to the team and the world championship will receive
free plays at NABCs when playing with members of
their team or members of another team representing a
Zone 2 NBO.
