Daily Bulletin Friday, December 2, 2016 89th Fall North American Bridge Championships Volume 89, Number 8 [email protected] Editors: Paul Linxwiler and Brent Manley Meckstroth, Rodwell win Blue Ribbon Pairs Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell started the final day of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 13th place, but put together two solid sessions to win the event for the third time as partners by 47.27 matchpoints on a top of 38. The win seals the 2016 Player of the Year honor for Meckstroth. Second place went to Billy Cohen and Ron Smith. The winners, often referred to as Meckwell, have been among the top pairs in bridge for more than three decades. They now have 121 North American titles between them – 61 for Rodwell, 60 for Meckstroth. They have won seven world championships as partners. They won the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1982 and in 2008. Lynn Deas, Schenectady NY – 27 NABC wins and nine world championships made up of seven continued on page 5 Gatlinburg tournament chair: The show will go on Amid the destruction and misery of the devastating fires in and around Gatlinburg TN, the chairman of one of ACBL’s most popular regionals said on Thursday that he is 99% confident that the tournament will go on in April as planned. “I’m certain,” said Pete Misslin, “that come April, if things are not back to normal, it will be close enough that there will be no impact on the tournament.” Misslin also assured players who are interested in attending the regional that there will be accommodations for all comers. “We will be able to find places for people to stay even if some of the hotels are not available.” The wildfires, burning in the Southeast for about two weeks, began to approach Gatlinburg and Smoky Mountain National Park on Monday. As of Thursday, the city was still under an evacuation notice with about 300 buildings damaged. Another 700 structures were damaged in the surrounding area. The national park is closed indefinitely. The cause of the wildfires is still under investigation. Winners of the 0-5000 Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs: Radu Nistor and Joan Brody. Mini-Blue champs: Nistor and Brody Radu Nistor and Joan Brody narrowly captured the title in yesterday’s final of the 0-5000 Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs, outpacing runners-up Michael Schrage and Edward Rauch by 3.5 matchpoints on a 25 top. Nistor of Sunnyside NY and Brody of Livingston NJ qualified fourth in Wednesday’s opening round and then combined a 54% in the first final session with a 61% in the second final to secure the win. This is the first limited NABC title for Brody. Nistor previously won the Lebhar IMP Pairs in 2014 and the 0-10,000 Swiss Teams earlier this year. The runners-up – Schrage, of Chestnut Hill MA, and Rauch, of Fort Lauderdale – were a pickup partnership. Lowes lead Senior Mixed JoAnne Lowe and Leon Lowe of Fountain Hills AZ set the pace in the qualifying round of the Senior Mixed Pairs. The Lowes will have an 11-matchpoint carryover advantage versus runners-up Ellie Hanlon of Tequesta FL and Bill Irvine of Delray Beach FL. Today’s two-session final will have 52 tables. Hoyos-Bernal lead 10K Fast Pairs Carlos Hoyos of Bogota, Colombia, and Francisco Bernal of Miami topped the qualifying round of the 0-10,000 Fast Pairs. They will begin today’s two-session final with a lead of 6.78 matchpoints over Regena Edwards of Laurel MD and Linda Dunn of Memphis TN. Thirty-six pairs qualified for today’s two-session final. A photo from downtown Gatlinburg fires News reports put the death toll from the disaster at 10 as of Thursday. There have been no identifications of those who died in the fires. Rain on Wednesday morning provided some relief for those battling the remaining wildfires, according to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. All fires have been extinguished in Gatlinburg though some are still smoldering. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts. When I learned about bridge in the summer of 1970, I went to a book store and bought Alfred Sheinwold’s “5 Weeks to Winning Bridge.” The next purchase was Louis Watson’s classic, “The Play of the Hand at Bridge.” I read and reread that book and learned a lot from it before I even knew there was such a thing as duplicate. I discovered how little I knew about bidding when I was introduced to duplicate in 1975. The book that helped me the most in bidding was “Judgment at Bridge,” a classic by Mike Lawrence. His other classic, “How to Read Your Opponents’ Cards,” helped me improve my declarer play by leaps and bounds. Eddie Kantar’s books on declarer play were also instrumental in my improvement. What was most beneficial to me was reading about different situations that come up at the table all the time. Here’s an example. You are in 6♠. Your left-hand opponent leads the ♥K. How would you play on the following layout? ♠ A J 10 8 3 ♥75 ♦ K 10 9 ♣AQJ ♠KQ964 ♥A2 ♦AJ4 ♣K82 It looks like you will have to find the ♦Q to make your slam, but there is a 100% line of play that does not involve finding the ♦Q. Not expecting to be facing a singleton spade, you leap to 4♠, ending the bidding. West leads the ♣3. East wins the ace and returns the ♣J to your king, West following with the 6. When you lead a spade to dummy’s ace, West plays the jack. Can you see any way out of this? Plan the play. Solution Ever hear of miracles? That is what you need here. The first miracle takes place when West follows with a spade honor. You hope West has the ♠Q J or ♠K J doubleton. The second miracle you need is for hearts to be 3-3. If they are, you can play four rounds of low heart. Whoever wins the trick will have to play a diamond, solving that problem for you, or some other suit, allowing you to ruff in one hand and discard a diamond from the other. If you had read about this situation before seeing it at the table, you would be prepared. DON’T Play too fast as declarer at trick one. No matter whether you are in a part score, game or slam, make it a habit to play deliberately at trick one. Many experts will tell you that more contracts are lost at trick one than at any other point in the play. Start by counting your losers if you are playing a suit contract. If you’re in notrump, count your winners. When you can win the trick in either hand, think about whether it matters. Decide whether you should pull trumps right away or save some for ruffs in dummy. If an opponent’s ace in a side suit must be with one opponent or the other to give you a chance at your contract, mentally place that card favorably and plan accordingly. For example, suppose you are in 4♥ and have already lost two tricks. You hold two low spades opposite three to the king, so the ♠A must be on your left. On top of that, you must decide which opponent has the ♣Q, and you can finesse either way for that card. If your left-hand opponent is a passed hand and has already shown up with 6 HCP, not counting the ♠A, you should play your RHO for the ♣Q. If LHO had that card, it would give him 12 HCP and he would have opened the bidding. I know that a lot of new players are more interested in bidding – especially regarding conventions – but bridge is a game of tricks, and if you don’t know the right approach to taking them, all the conventions in the world will not improve your results. hearts, discarding your ♣10. Whichever defender ruffs costs the defense a trump trick. If the hand with honor third ruffs, the two remaining spade honors will crash the next time a trump is led. If the hand with the two honors ruffs, all you lose is two spades and the club ace. You can even do a little better. After crossing to the ♠A, whether or not an honor falls, lead a low diamond. If East has the ace without the queen, he may think you have the stiff queen and go up with the ace. If he does, ruff, cross to a heart and pitch your losing club on the ♦K, losing two spades and a club, thank you very much. Finally, if nothing wonderful happens in diamonds, you are still alive if hearts are 3-3. It is often the best percentage play! Top players make this an art form. Given this layout, the contract cannot be made against best defense. P.S Do not expect to be a winning player if you always get “best defense.” Had hearts been 3-3, you would have made the contract. A little realism is needed here, however. The event is a six-session open team-of-four event scored by board-a-match with two qualifying sessions, two semifinal sessions and two final sessions. It was contested as a four-session championship until 1966. The event is generally thought to be the toughest on the ACBL tournament calendar. The event began in 1929 as the North American Open Team Championship and the prize was the Chicago Trophy, donated by the Auction Bridge Club of Chicago. (In 1928, the open team competition was for the Harold S. Vanderbilt Cup.) The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 by the Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by the Greater New York Bridge Association in memory of Curt H. Reisinger. Reisinger (1891–1964), of New York City, was a principal patron of contract bridge and the American Contract Bridge League in the early years of both. Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuser and a grandson of Busch, co-founders of the brewery from which he inherited great wealth. That wealth enabled him to become a stalwart financial supporter of the game, as well as a noted philanthropist on a far larger scale. In the years when there was often a struggle to meet the League’s modest payroll, Reisinger was often called upon and never failed to help with a loan or an outright gift. His support made possible several early contract bridge tournaments, clubs and books. Among the positions in which he served were director of the United States Bridge Association, president of the Greater New York Bridge Association and chairman of the ACBL. Players will be vying for the Keohane Trophy, donated by Ethel Keohane in 1973 in memory of her husband, William H. Keohane, one of the leading New England bridge personalities. Bill Keohane (1896-1972) was a consulting engineer, bridge teacher and bridge administrator. He served as chairman of the 1970 Summer NABC in Boston and, for many years, was chairman of the New England Individual Championship. He died later that year, just before he was to attend his first Board meeting. The Keohane Trophy was presented for the Open Individual Championship until it was re-designated in 1995 by the ACBL Board of Directors for the North American Swiss Teams. Going strong at 96 Elinor Borenstine plays a lot of bridge. The 96-year-old is a fixture at the InterCity Bridge Club in her hometown of Sarasota FL where she is known as a fierce competitor. She is also beloved by many of her bridge friends, so much so that several of them banded together to purchase a game sponsorship in her name at the Orlando NABC. The “Friends of Elinor Borenstine Strati-Flighted Daylight A/B/C Pairs” was played yesterday. Borenstine was persuaded to play in the game named in her honor, but she set one condition: She wanted to play with her longtime partner Gen Geiger, also of Sarasota. The duo – sporting shirts with the names “Elinor” and “Elinor’s Partner” emblazoned on them – finished sixth overall. Historical sidebar: Elinor’s father, Eddie Jacobson went into partnership with Harry S. Truman in 1918. it’s a quotation from a bridge book written by a lady who became the first female Grand Master of the WBF. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing about acrostic puzzles is that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author … followed by the title of that book! You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells the solver which of the clue answers will give you that particular letter. Also, in this puzzle note that five of the clues are marked with an (*). In each of those five clues, tricky cryptic Anglo-American word play is being used. These clues include three anagrams, a hidden word, and one clue involving Roman numerals. This information should help you find the correct answer to each of the cryptics. Working in both directions … from the clues to the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) in solving acrostics. TD Matt Koltnow explains that using the Stop card is optional, and that while the procedure is included in the regulations and is not a law, employing the Stop card helps players comply with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner.” The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold: 1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting Unauthorized Information by acting too slowly or too quickly. 2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by looking at the auction rather than reading meanings into fast bids and hesitations. Players who employ the Stop card must consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)– 3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look at their cards before making a call. “Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow. Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says that more experienced players are expected to take time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a Stop card is used. Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.
