Grubb Family YMCA Bench Press Competition Rules The Grubb Family YMCA’s Bench Press Competition provides an opportunity for members to build relationships through a common interest in strength training. The event is also an ideal way for any exerciser to pursue a new wellness goal. PARTICIPANTS This competition is open to all Grubb Family YMCA members who are at least 16 years-old. AWARDS Awards will be given to the top lifter in each weight class. WEIGHT CLASSES Male weight classes are: 174 lbs. and less; 175-199 lbs.; 200-224 lbs.; 225-249 lbs.; 250 lbs. and up. Female weight classes are: 124 lbs. and less; 125-149 lbs.; 150-174 lbs.; 175-199 lbs.; 200 lbs. and up. CONDUCT The Grubb Family YMCA promotes positive sportsmanship at all contests and activities. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. This includes any action which is unbecoming to an ethical, fair, and honorable person including, but not limited to, acts of deceit, disrespect, vulgarity, and taunting. GENERAL RULES • Each contestant may take a maximum of three attempts during the contest. • Contestants will indicate the weight they wish to attempt as the bar is loaded. Once the weight has been selected, a lower weight cannot be selected. • Each participant will have one turn on the bench to complete their three attempts. • Random drawing will determine lift order within each weight class. • Each participant is allowed a maximum of one minute rest between attempts. • If there is a tie in a weight class, the winner will be the contestant who weighs the least. THE LIFT • Closed grip will be the only grip permitted. • Each contestant may choose to have the weight handed to them by the spotters at full arm’s length or to remove the weight from the rack themselves. • The bar must make contact with the chest but may not bounce off of the chest. • A successful lift will go from having elbows locked out, to the chest, and elbows returned to a locked position. • Participants may not arch their back and both feet must stay flat on the floor at all times during the lift. The buttocks and shoulders must remain on the bench during the lift. The official will determine an appropriate lift. Failure to keep proper body position will result in a disqualified lift attempt. • The lift is disqualified if the weight touches any supports or if the lifter is assisted in any manner. • Spotters will be provided to assist in handing the weight to the contestants, returning the weight to the rack, and during a lift if needed.
