Emma: Well, Terry, you and the Tom-Toms are going to
audition for Teen Idol in ten days. How do you feel?
Terry: Excited, but not too nervous. We’ve performed on
stage in Greenwich.
Emma: Have you been on tour yet?
Terry: No, but we’ve already started to plan a tour. After
we’ve won Teen Idol, we want to perform more.
Emma: Great! And have you ever been on TV?
Terry: No, but I’ve been on the radio, in DJ Ted Cool Cat
Brown’s show. Remember – Sam’s birthday song.
Emma: Oh, yes. Have you won any competitions yet?
Terry: Uh, so far I’ve won a prize for best drummer at
school.
Emma: But have you ever been in a show like Teen Idol ?
Terry: No, we’ve never done anything like it!
Emma Tell me about the band. You have a great new singer, right?
Terry: Yes, Rob McGregor has just joined the band. Thanks, Emma! He has already learnt
the words, and he’s brilliant on the guitar, too. But he’s never played on stage.
Emma: Are you sure you’ve practised enough? Have you had enough time?
Terry: Well, not really. We’ve had so much homework. But we’re almost ready.
Emma: Are your mum and dad going to be there?
Terry: Yes, but Dad doesn’t know about it. It’s going to be a birthday surprise for him.

Elvis lives!
Have you ever heard of Elvis Presley? Maybe not – he died in
1977. But people still call him the ‘King of Rock and Roll’. His
song One night has just become the 1000th number one hit
in the British singles charts.
Elvis was born in 1935. He played the guitar when he was a
boy, and he made his first record in 1953 as a present for his
mother. He soon became famous. Elvis was good-looking,
he had a great voice and was a brilliant dancer. But he lived
a wild life, and he died when he was only 42. Graceland, his
home in Tennessee, has become a tourist sight.
Elvis is still a big star. Lots of people have used his songs in
TV shows or on the radio. So far he has sold more than one
billion records, more than any other star.
Lots of fans perform at competitions to be the ‘best Elvis’. Thirteen-year-old Kevin Pinner
is one of them. “I first sang an Elvis song for my parents’ friends when I was six. They liked
it, and I’ve sung at lots of other parties and shows. Last year I went to an Elvis Festival in
Canada and won the first prize. I’ve already won two Elvis competitions! I look like Elvis,
too. He dyed his hair black when he was older. I dyed my hair black a month ago, so I look
even more like him. Elvis often wore white suits. But they’re really expensive. I saw one in a

six years old, my dad took me to my first
match. I sat on his shoulders and watched

training.
People say: “You’re the boy with the golden
boots.” I don’t know about that. Maybe I’ve
been lucky, but the more I train and the
more I practise, the luckier I get! Now I’m the
youngest player in the Premiership.
Some players want to be rich and famous,
or see their picture on TV or in the fan
magazines. I’ve never been like that. For me,
football is just like any other sport. You must
win, that’s all. I only score the goals because
the other players help me. We’re all one
team. They kick the ball to me when I’m in
front of the goal, and then it’s easy to score!
I learn from the other players, too.
And another great thing about my job is
travelling. I’ve already visited so many
different places. Some of the other players
have left England to join clubs in Germany
or Spain, but I like a nice game in front of a
‘home crowd’. Dad always watches me.
Now I can help him and Mum. They’ve never
had much money. We lived in a very small
flat in Manchester when I was a boy. But I’ve
made enough money to buy them a house
in London. They’re my new neighbours.
I also give money to charity, and I’ve started
a football club for kids in our town. We have
great fun together.
David Beckham is much more famous than
me. He looks like a film star. I’m just the ‘boy
next door’. But I love football, and my dream
is to play for England. I’m going to score the
big goal when England wins the World Cup.
Just wait!”

happened to me. I won the show when I was
only eleven. I didn’t want to be a star, but
my parents pushed me onto the stage. When
I was young, I had singing and dancing
lessons. That was fun, but only as a hobby.
You know, I’ve always been shy and I didn’t
want to go on stage. But my parents had
big hopes for me. I remember their words:
“You’re our only child. We just want the best
for you.” And: “We’ve spent so much money
on your dancing lessons!”
I practised two hours per day. Dad was really
strict about that.
When I won Teen Idol, my life changed.
I started to make money, but I couldn’t do
what I wanted to do. I got hundreds of letters
from fans every day! Some fans wanted to

success, but it was not enough for
them. They had bigger plans for me
until it became too much for me. I
didn’t want to live like this. It made
me ill, and I couldn’t eat anything.
I was very, very ill. Then my

William and the play
Richmal Crompton’s “Just William” short stories are popular
in England. In this story, William Brown’s older brother and
sister, Robert and Ethel, have invited their friends from the
Drama Club to a party. They are going to have dinner1 and
then act a short play. Robert and Ethel have not invited
William to the play because he always gets into trouble.
But William wants to see the play, so he is going to watch it
through a window from the garden with his friends Ginger,
Douglas and Henry, the ‘Outlaws2’. They are in the dining
room3 and are looking at the good food, when suddenly the
guests4 start to come in …

“Get under5 the table, fast!” said William.
So the Outlaws got under the table – fast.
When the guests saw William, he was
moving chairs around6 the table.
“This is William,” said Robert. He was not
happy to see his brother there.
The guests sat down at the table and
William sat next to a tall, quiet man.
Conversation was not easy.
“School holiday now, eh?” the man asked.
“Yes,” said William.
“Do you like the holidays?”
“Yes,” said William.
“Do you like your lessons?”
“No.”
Then William remembered his friends.
They were still under the table. When
nobody was looking, he gave them food.
Soon, the guests found the boys under
the table. William had to go to his bedroom,
but the Outlaws stayed in the garden.
William whispered7 to them from his
bedroom window. “What are they doing
now?”
“They’re acting the play,” whispered
Douglas. “Everyone is watching!”
“Well, go and watch it,” said William, “and
tell me about it tomorrow8. Tell me about
Robert and Ethel, and if they do anything
silly. And …”
“Yes?”
“I’m very hungry. I haven’t had anything
to eat yet. I gave you all my food. Go and
see if there’s anything in the dining room.
There’s nobody there because they’re
watching the play. Keep some for yourself
and put some in a basket9. I can throw down
a rope10 and pull11 it up.”
The Outlaws left. In a few moments they
came back, but without any food.
“William,” said Ginger. “There’s a
burglar12 in the dining room. A burglar
with his bag and everything. He’s drinking
something.”
In a minute, William was down in the
garden with the Outlaws. Together they went
to the dining room window. Yes, there he
was – a real burglar! He was drinking whisky
and soda13.
They hid14 and talked about what to do.
“We must tell your father,” said Douglas.
“No!” said William. “We can catch the
burglar without him. It’s more fun!”

“Yes!” said Henry and Ginger. William
was the leader15.
“What are we going to do with him when
we’ve caught him?” asked Ginger.
“We can lock him up16 somewhere,” said
William. He went upstairs and soon he was
back with a big old curtain17.
The Outlaws went into the dining room,
and caught the man with the curtain while
he was still drinking. He was not a big man
or a strong man. He shouted, but nobody
heard him because Ethel was singing in the
room next to the dining room. The Outlaws
pulled the man into the garden and locked
him in the greenhouse18. Then they went
back to the house.
“That wasn’t easy!” said Douglas.
“Let’s go and tell everybody now,” said
Ginger.
But William was very hungry. “No, he’s
OK for now19,” he said. “He can’t go
anywhere. Let’s take some food upstairs.
We can tell them later.”
The Outlaws liked this idea. They went
back to the dining room, put some food
on their plates and brought it upstairs to
William’s bedroom.
While they were eating, they talked
about the burglar. Suddenly Ginger heard
something.
“Can you hear that downstairs?” he said.
They could hear Ethel’s voice. She was
talking to someone on the phone.
“Please be quiet while I call his mother,”
said Ethel. “Hello – hello – Is that Mrs
Langley? Has Harold come home? Hasn’t
he? – No one knows where he is. We got to
the part in the play when he comes in – after
my song – I waited and waited and he never
came. I left the stage in the middle of20 the
play. It was terrible. Everyone was looking
for him – so we stopped the play. We couldn’t
go on without him. He was the burglar.
I hope nothing bad has happened.
I hope he hasn’t had a terrible accident21.”
Then the Outlaws heard Mrs Brown’s
voice, high and very worried. “Oh, Ethel,
where’s your father? It’s too dark to see
anything, but something terrible is
happening in the garden. Someone is
breaking all the glass in the greenhouse.”
Everyone went out into the garden.
While they were there, two things
happened. The Outlaws took their food and
ran back home. And William got into bed
and ‘went to sleep’. When his family came
into his bedroom a few minutes later, his
eyes were closed.
“Oh, he’s sleeping!” said Mrs Brown. “It’s
so bad for children to wake up in the middle
of a dream.”
Luckily22 they did not look under the bed.
They did not see the big plate of food.
After they left, William got the plate of
food from under his bed. While he was
eating, he did not think about ‘tomorrow’.
